Postcard Photo - Miners underground in Pabst Mine, Ironwood, Gogebic County, MI
Postcard Photo showing 15 miners underground in the Pabst Mine in Ironwood. Gogebic County, Michigan. Miners are wearing carbide cap lamps. The Pabst mine was named for one-time owner. This new shaft was dug on a sixty-four degree incline towards the north, and was 10 feet(3.0 m) by 18 feet 8 inches. It descended nearly 2,600 feet through quartz slate and, for safety, its walls were lined with concrete and wood planks held in place with steel. 3 Original Brass Miners' Underground Check - hand stamped
This is a group of three very old miners' underground person checks.they were used to confirm that those who went down also came up. These are quite old and have been cleaned a bit to be readable. They appear to be a mixture of brass and copper-they are not nearly as bright as the photo shows nor are they as smooth. Note that the first or top one is flipped backwards to show you the rear side-it is number 142 and hand-stamped as are all of these.
