Postcard Photo - Miners underground in Pabst Mine, Ironwood, Gogebic County, MI
Postcard Photo showing 15 miners underground in the Pabst Mine in Ironwood. Gogebic County, Michigan. Miners are wearing carbide cap lamps. The Pabst mine was named for one-time owner. Milwaukee brewery owner Frederick Pabst. It had passed through a number of corporate owners before being purchased by the Oliver Iron Mining Company, which became a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation in 1901. Three years later, the company added another shaft to the mine, named"G" shaft, which would become one of its most productive. This new shaft was dug on a sixty-four degree incline towards the north, and was 10 feet(3.0 m) by 18 feet 8 inches. It descended nearly 2,600 feet through quartz slate and, for safety, its walls were lined with concrete and wood planks held in place with steel. Offered here is a hand wrought steel blacksmith made miners' powder spoon. Found underground in the Morning Star Mine, Cerro Gordo Mining District, Inyo Mountains, California. This miners' tool was brought back with the permission of the late mine owners Mike Patterson and Jody Stewart many years ago, found on the two hundred level of the mine. Washoe stamped miners picks are the earliest and most sought after picks you can collect and this one was found deep underground in an abandoned 1890s Randsburg Mining District mine and hasn't seen light in over 120 years. Drift picks were used in driving Drifts, Crosscuts and tunnells and wherever the working area was tight. It is 30" long and the head is 16" long with the early straight pick ears and narrow handle neck that is common for the earliest of all hard rock miners picks. It has it's original excellent hickory handle that fits tight into the head. This whole tool is in excellent ... moreoverall condition. This very rare Washoe Pick represents the earliest tools of early 1880s underground hard rock underground mining. Good Luck

Original Cased W. Darley & Company Miners' Dip Needle-Underground Mine Engineer
Offered here is an original cased Miners' Dip Needle. Manufactured by W. S. Darley& Company. Measures 3.50" diameter, with the original brass rod that screws into the dip needle. Miners' Dip Needles were used typically by the mining engineer to measure the strike and dip of an ore body or mineralized zone found underground. The compass would assist in the mapping process to show the shift boss and mine assayer the direction the miners should keep driving the drift to stay on line with the mineralized zone. Wonderful piece of underground mining history, still in good working condition. Thanks for looking! RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d71f%2B0a7%3E-14bd9678ae4-0x109-
