This auction is for an antique Iron Miner's Lamp called a sticking tommy. This piece is a very rare form. Being in the form of a"gal leg" or"lady leg" This piece is beautifully crafted. Note the bevel on the handle, the notching on the candle holder and even the delicately curved tip to the hanger. The piece measures 13" long. It is in superb condition with no bends, breaks, repairs or damage. There is age expected oxidation to the finish. Really a wonderful piece of Americana. I purchased this from an elderly couple at there estate sale. They had collected a lot of antiques over the years, I have several listed in my store. they told me this was an antique miners candle that was used down in the mine. The candle is not wax, it looks to be made out of something more solid, there is a break towards the bottom of the candle and only the wick is holding it together there. I cannot see any marks on the item, but it is discolored with age, so i cannot say. It measures about 8" long, and the round loop is 1 1/2" across. Vintage Mine Candle Stick Holder Miners Light Primitive Antique Sticking Tommy
This vintage miner's iron candle holder has a pointed end was pushed into timber to add light to an area. This could be utilized as a decorator piece in your home with the same premise. These were also used in ships on in early homesteads as light sources. It measures 10 1/4" long by 2 1/4" wide at the widest portion and the protruding curved hook measures 3" high. The tip of this curved hook looks like a little piece may be broken off(please inspect photo) although it is still pretty pointy. This item is in good vintage condition with normal patina. Antique forged STICKING TOMMY SPIKE Mining Candle Stick Holder - Unmarked
This auction is for an original metal candle holder for uses in mines and is sometimes called a"Sticking Tommy" or"Tommy Stick" They were normally fashioned by a blacksmith into a shape that could be wedged into wood timbers or into a crack in a rock wall by the point or hung from a cleft on the mine's wall. There are no manufacturer's marks on this stick. The candlestick is 8-7/8 inches long from the point of the shaft to the back of the loop handle and the hanging hook is 2-3/4 inches high. The tip that would have been placed in a crack of the wall has a square(four sided) configuration and transitions to a semicircular cross section in the rounded handle portion. Both tips are in good condition. The candle socket is an integral part of the body made from a single piece of metal and is still springy and in solid ... morecondition. Light pitting from old rust is present on mostly the back of the loop handle but virtually no pitting on the inside of the loop at the back of the handle or on the pointed end of the stick. The piece is solid and well made. I have found no cracks. Breaks, mends or repairs to this piece. I have not attempted to clean or polish this candle holder. I do not know the history of the piece. Sticking Tommy" Miner's candlestick, candle holder measures 9 1/2" long. It was Blacksmith forged. Mid to late 19th century, used by miners for underground light. It was spiked into wood beams or crevices in rock to light the way. These were mainly used starting in the 1850s for the hard rock mining of gold. This Sticking Tommy has marks along the spike and hook made by the Blacksmith. It has some rust. A little spot of paint, and slightly bent areas including the tip, spike, hook and candle holder. All bends are minor and the candle holder is still quite good looking and displays well. Nice. Original forged piece of Western U. S. 19th century mining history.
