Koehler Brass Mining Flame Safety Lamp Model #289-1A RARE!
This is a vintage/antique flame safety lamp made by the Koehler company of Marlboro. Massachusetts. Design: Flame safety lamps were used in mines and other areas were explosive gases could be present. The lamp burned normally until it came into contact with a low oxygen environment and would suddenly go out with a pop or dim. This would alert the operator that there was explosive gases in the air. And not to proceed any further. A normal lamp or flame would ignite the gas, spelling doom for everyone in the vicinity. History: This lamp was originally designed for coal miners as stated before. However this model was adopted by the U.S Navy and Coast Guard for use in the engine rooms of vessels, were gas leaks could occur. This particular lamp for sale was used on the U.S.S Independence(CV-62) aircraft carrier from the 1950's to the 1970's.

The brass magnetic lock collar is marked, Issued to the Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of AM Inc. Brooklyn N.Y. Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of Brookl yn only sold imported Wolf lamps until after WWI then they started to make them) and"Permissible flame safety lamp approval no. Department of the Interior Bureau of Mines" seal. The Bureau of Mines was established in 1910 so the lamp probably dates between 1910 and 1920. The lamp is 11 1/2 inches tall to top of hook eye. All brass including hook and mirror holder. It has the magnet to unlock it but I still can't get it open. I don't know who put it together last but they put the globe in upside down and it isn't lined up. ... moreThe lock pins maybe stuck because the lamp was put together poorly. Antique Vintage Unused Wolf Safety Lamp Miners Mining Excellent
I purchased this lamp at an estate sale. I do not know its age. Judging from the small amount of research that I have done and its appearance. I would guess that it is old enough to be considered vintage or possibly antique. I leave it to the buyer to decide how old it is. It comes with the key that you see in one of my photos. The key is not the original key. It did not have a key when I purchased it. The key that you will receive with the lamp is an old clock key that I happened to have. It fits the lamp and works fine. It weighs close to 3 pounds 7 ounces. Measured to the top of the ring that holds the hook. It measures about 11 1/2 inches tall. Most of the parts appear to be brass. The glass is marked. Wolf, Made in the USA” and“Top” The oval label reads, Wolf Safety Lamp CC, of America Inc. New York U.S.A. There is a number lightly scratched ... moreinto the bottom that reads“DL 806645” I have not found any other identifying marks on it. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. It is generally in excellent condition. Judging by the unused appearance of the wick and the cotton like material inside the reservoir, I would say that it probably has not been used. It is tarnished like you see in my photos. Some of the photos are taken with a flash that makes the metal look lighter than it looks under normal lighting. It is a little dusty in small areas that I missed when I was wiping it off. It was pretty dusty when I purchased it. It looks like a red flint is present. The small wheel that strikes the flint looks like it has a small amount of whitish and light oxidation on it. The thick and heavy looking ring at the base of the glass has a tiny nick along the top edge that you can see in a close-up. Also, if you look closely, you can see a small amount of very slight roughness along that same edge. I'm talking about a very slight flaw and I think that it was probably made that way. There are also some small imperfections in the casting of that ring. I think a nut or something like a nut is missing from

Extremely Rare Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of America prototype flame safety lamp. This lamp appears in no Wolf catalog or advertisements. You aren't going to see another one for sale. This lamp came from the collection of early. And long-time, mine lamp collector George Bayles when his collection was broken up more than 30 years ago. George knew Domingo Anglada, head of the Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of America and obtained several different Wolf prototypes from him. This standard-size brass and steel magnetic lock lamp has a brass skirt added around the fuel font into which a brass sleeve attached to a brass cone and hollow brass tube is attached. The brass skirt only allows air from within the skirt to reach the breather opening below the glass. There is about an inch of space between the bottom of the lamp and the top of the inside of the lower ... moresleeve that fits up into the skirt. Many collectors have looked at this lamp over the years and the concensus is that the lamp was apparently designed to sniff methane from low-lying cracks. Either it did not function well or there was no market for such a lamp as it never went into production. This lamp. Without the added features is the lamp that, in 1921, was approved by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, six years after the Koehler Company obtained its first lamp approval from the USBM. This standard-size Wolf lamp manufactured in the U.S was 11 3/4 in. tall to the top of the hook ring by 3.5 in. in dia. and available in both steel and aluminum with brass fittings. Lamps were equipped with the internal flint igniter and wick screw adjustment. The lamp model No. 100 with a corrugated bonnet, flat or round burner, and magnetic lock received USBM approval. Up for auction is a vintage Koehler mining lamp. Unusual variant in that it has a reflector. I've not seen a Koehler with this feature, it appears stock but mirror is missing and there is a tiny crack in the tin frame. Of course there is some darkening to the brass and paint on the lamp. I've not been able to get the base off and it is untested. Polish, Slovak, Italian. Board paper sign warns about Locomotive Brakeman hurt when he did not handle his car rightly. Probably 1920 or earlier. The Hudson Coal Company employed ten thousand workers at its fourteen mines and six coal breakers in northeastern Pennsylvania. Fantastic clanny style davy lamp marked HUGHES BROS. MAKER SCRANTON PA. Also stamped with A American Flag Eagle with Arrows not sure if it was military because of that stamp. Purchased at a estate sale close to Gold and Coal Mines This davy safety lamp was manufactured by the Hughes Brothers of Scranton. Pennsylvania in the latter half of the 19th century. This Clanny style safety lamp employs a wire gauze and a glass globe surrounding the wick to protect the flame. Safety lamps were invented in the early 19th century. It appears to be used but in great condition. I do not know if it works has been cleaned and has no wick and is being sold as is.But looks like with a wick it would work fine. Appears to be a very early cast iron mining lamp and still has its original lightbulb intact and surrounding glass is not chipped or cracked. Lamp does show some moderate areas of oxidation and rust powder on the interior. Lamp seperates in halves and still screws on easily despite that it looks like a small area has chipped off but still tightens and secures easily with no restraint. Hook hanger still seems durable. There is no company maker and the only stampings include numbers in two areas on the lamp: 446 on the base and 643 above the light bulb and glass enclosure. I haven't found many comparable mining lamps to this one in research so it's ... morepossibly a transitional piece: It may be an early version of the electrical mining lamp as they were not widely put on the market until about 1902. Yet such electrical lamps were still patented in the 1890s. I have only lightly cleaned off some of the inside interior of this lamp and does have some aged dust and should be properly cleaned. SEPT. 8th 1928" around green cross with"MONONGAHELA VALLEY COAL MINING INSTITUTE FIRST AID MEET" in gold-colored lettering on white background- very clear writing! On the back in raised letters is"SAFETY FIRST LAST AND ALWAYS IN ALL COAL MINES" The leather strap shows some wear. As would be expected, but the buckle works correctly. Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Safety Award Fob, Mining, Miners
Old watch fob safety award from the Kerr-Addison Gold Mines. Kerr Addison Mine began operations in 1938. During its 58-year run. The mine produced approximately 11 million ounces of gold which was mined down to a depth of 4,500 feet and over a strike length of 3,200 feet. The property of Kerr-Addison Gold Mines is located in the Larder Lake district of Ontario about 3 miles from the Quebec boundary on the highway between Kirkland Lake and Noranda. Roughly 320 miles due north of Toronto and 365 miles north of Buffalo, N. Y. The property was originally staked in 1906 and after several development efforts finally came into continuous production at 500 tons per day in 1937. In 1939 the daily tonnage was increased to 1200 and in 1941 to 2100 tons. Wolf Mining Safety Lamp with Mirror and Hose Nipple - Brass Construction
This is a miner's safety lamp that was produced by the Wolf Safety Lamp Company of Sheffield. England. Miners would use these lamps to test for dangerous gasses in the mine by watching for changes in color of the lamp's flame. The flame color would indicate which gasses were present. This lamp features a hose nipple for the attachment of a flexible hose and a 45 degree mirror. These would allow the miner to reach around a corner a still be able to view the flame with the mirror. Offered here is a rare vintage Miners' Safety Cage. Acquired originally from the Belmont Mine, near Superior, Arizona, many years ago. Sold to a collector in Georgetown, Colorado, who I acquired it from myself many years ago. Measures 4' x 4' square, about eight feet tall. Includes all the original equipment including both doors(often missing) and fold down safety bars, safety dogs and springs. Would have comfortably fit one ore car and tender, or four miners. Safety cage's were, and still are, used at underground mines to reach the depths via a vertical shaft, with a heavy cable lowering and raising the cage at the direction of the underground miner to the hoist engineer. Ore car tracks affixed to floor of cage were used to off load an ore car of ore or equipment. WELCOME! I wish I could capture pictures of it working. But I took it apart to dry out the fuel a long time ago. I picked it up from an antique store that was going out of business two years ago. Total burn time since I've owned it is around an hour. Plenty of wick and flint left. Easy to operate. Like most others out there, I don't have the tool that is specifically made for the fuel door, but it comes open easily with a fork or 2 toothpicks. The aluminum has pitting that is common on these. This auction is for a vintage Joseph Cooke brass mine flame safety lamp/light from I suspect the late 1800's. It is stamped with the"JCB" Joseph Cooke Birmingham triangular logo as shown in the pictures. It is also stamped with"111" which I guess would be the model number or Colliery that it was assigned to. It measures approx. 9 1/2" to the top of the eye hook not including the belt hook length. The diameter of the base is 3 1/8" round. Antique Davy Miner's Safety Lantern. This one appears to be from around 1900 or so. It is brass and stands 9" high. It unscrews to reveal the burner. There is a turning device on the bottom that moves the little mechanism inside. Screens are complete. There is a hinged top cap and a round hook. The top closure turns sideways and opens. We don't see a name on it. There is a large"N" and"V" stamped on the top. On the side is an"A" and an"N" hand stamped. A nice looking lantern from the early days of mining. Check out the photos. Antique Flame Safety Mining Lamp. I'm afraid my area of expertise is R.R. lanterns and such. Not this. So I'm listing what I can. Permissible, marine? This lamp stands not quite 11 1/2 inches to the top of the clasp ring where the hanger is attached. It stamped KOEHLER MF'G CO. MARLBORO MASS. U.S.A. Parts of it seem to be made of brass and with the exception of the ring near the top which has some surface corrosion. This lamp appears to be in incredible condition. Two brass"screens" with another ring, see pic. I see some of these with glass inserts around the screens and maybe this is supposed to have one, but honestly I don't see how it would fit. The wick moves freely up and down. There's a small lever on the bottom which I"think" makes a strike but I'm not sure and I'm not messing with it. ... moreIt moves the"striker" inside so I assume that's what it's for.
