A great antique coal miner's lamp. This belonged to my husband's father who worked in the mines of Eastern KY and Southwest VA. It is a Guys Dropper Auto-Lite carbide lamp made by Universal Lamp Co. The hinged stopper still functions great. No dents or holes. The striker wheel still turns easily. The hat hook is in great condition. No damage at all. It also still has the rubber piece in place on the bottom of the lamp. All I have done is wipe the dust from it. I have made no attempts to clean or remove the patina that time has wrought. This unusual antique brass miner's lamp is about 4 5/16" tall and the reflector is 4" in diameter and it was designed to be worn on the miner's helmet. The carbide fueled lamp is very sturdy and well made and it is marked"Auto-Lite Universal Lamp Co.etc. on the top and the bottom. I was told that this lamp was used in the N.E. Pennsylvania coal mines long ago. There is some wear and a patina of age but over all the miner's lamp is in good original condition with no parts missing except for the carbide fuel and a piece of flint for the striker. I know it is very old but I don't know the exact date it was made. My best guess as to age is ca. 1930s or earlier. Good luck! Up for auction we have a Flexo Band Cool Cap. Or more commonly known as a"turtle shell" hard hat for miners. This hat is made of reinforced molded leather, and has upstanding ribs for ventilation. This particular hat appears to be a size small, and has a circumference of 22" The right side of the brim is stamped with the number 96. Given it's age, the helmet is in great condition. Typical scratches and dings, but all of the threading and roping is intact with no breaks or fraying. It has not been cleaned in any way, but could use a good dusting with a dry cloth. We'll leave that up to the buyer. Also included is the Auto-Lite carbide lamp with blade hook. This is a smaller size lamp. 3.5" in height with a 2" diameter base. This vintage brass miners helmet lamp would attach to the front of the helmet with the use of the hooks on the back of it. The patent date is May 7. 1912 and it is in very good condition. Antique Virginia Miners"Safety" Hard Hat/Helmet w/Liner Auto Lite Carbide Lamp The woman I purchased this from told me it came from Virginia and was originally used for cole mining. I am not an expert on this item so please ask questions BEFORE you bid and I will do my best to respond same day. It has the original liner still in place. As you can see from the pictures. The back part of the liner is partially ripped in two spots. It has a leather loop on the back for hanging(original) and a mount on the front that holds the lamp. One side of the mounting bracket is damaged and there is a spider crack right next to that but I can't feel where it goes through to the inside. On the very back right under the leather loop, a small piece is missing at the stitch line 1/2"3/4"approx. No rust on the lamp that I could see. The hose is falling apart and needs to be replaced and there may be a few small pieces missing? The leather strap has wear, but is still holding together well. and the glass lens is in good condition with no chips or cracks. The lens has a cover that hinges out of the way and clips to the side. Vintage coal miner's helmet that I can not locate a maker's mark/name on. Definitely made of fiberglass with a leather mount riveted into the front for a headlamp. Label residue seen next to leather. Leather also has a metal re-enforcement on the backside. Shows some small chips and dings from use and interior liner is missing. Old Brass Auto-Lite Carbide, Copper, Mining Miner Helmet Lamp, Calumet, MI
The reflector is 2.5 inches in diameter. The rubber seal and the rubber around the base is hard. The spark wheel works nicely and I do not see why this lamp would not still light after the middle seal is replaced. There are a few small dents in the base. But nothing serious. This came from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at an auction in Keweenaw County, an old copper mining area. Thanks for taking a look.
