Postcard Photo of the Davidson No. 1 mine wood headframe. Mineral Hills, Menominee Iron Range, Iron County, Michigan. The Davidson mine was part of an iron mining operation comprising four mines. The Davidson No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 Mines. Operations were started in 1911 by the Davidson Ore Mining Co. and continued through closure in 1947 by the Pittsburgh Coke& Iron Co. which assumed ownership in 1941. 8.3 million tons of ore were shipped. Pickands Mining Co. leased the Davidson properties in 1947. And continued development in the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 Mines in combination with the James Mine through 1953. The Davidson No. 1 Mine featured one shaft with five levels developed to 950 feet depth. The Davidson No. 2 Mine developed one shaft and four levels to 440 feet depth. The Davidson No. 3 Mine featured one shaft and three levels ... moreto 535 feet depth. But workings were deepened to 950 feet in combined operation with the James Mine. Old original photograph of the Tilden mine No. 9 and 10 shafts. Nice crisp image. The Tilden Mine was located at Bessemer. Gogebic Iron Range, Gogebic County, Michigan. The Gogebic Iron Range extends for 80 miles from Lake Namekagon. Wisconsin, in the west, to Lake Gogebic in Michigan, in the west. Nathaniel D. Moore uncovered ore deposits in the Penokee Gap near Bessemer in 1872, but it was not until 1884 that the first iron ore shipment was made. The Gogebic Range area experienced an initial speculative boom in the mid-1880s, and saw recurring booms and busts from 1884 to 1967. The area of greatest production was in the Ironwood. Michigan/Hurley, Wisconsin area. Some important producers in this area included the Norrie mine, Aurora mine, Ashland mine, Newport mine, Bonnie mine, Davis mine, Geneva mine and Pabst mine in Ironwood. For your consideration and from a recent rural Missouri estate is this early Denver Fire Clay mining Assayer's gold silver cast iron mold. Circa 1850-1880. It is a 16 cavity mold with each cavity being approxametly 1 5/8" in diameter and 1/16" deep. It is marked in raised letters on the bottom, D.F.C. Denver Fire Clay) 2131" It measures 7 3/4" x 8 3/4" It has four feet that measures 1/2" long. I have included the following information on Denver Fire Clay Company. The Denver Fire Clay Company had its origins in a drugstore owned and operated by Joab Otis Bosworth at 411 Larimer St. in Denver. The year was 1876 and Bosworth had already began experimenting with fire clay hoping to develop assay products including scorifiers. Crucibles and muffles to compete with those being imported from Europe. The assay business ... morewas booming and Bosworth quickly created a product line. He formed a partnership know as Bosworth, Babcock& Co and began supplying Colorado assayers with a variety of products including chemicals, mining equipment and supplies, and clay crucibles under the name Denver Fire Clay. In 1878, Bosworth enlisted William Hover, an assayer from Salt Lake City, to become a business partner in the drugstore and Bosworth devoted full time to the fire clay business. The Denver Fire Clay Co. at 31 st and Blake Streets was incorporated in 1880 with a capital stock of $20.000. Bosworth was elected President, F.M. Case, Secretary, George Snyder, Jr. Assistant Secretary, and A.E. Smith, Plant Foreman. Much of DFC’s early production was of fire-resistant bricks for the construction of smelters. In 1890, Bosworth was killed in an explosion at the DFC store on Larimer St. and his widow continued the business constructing a new downtown building to house the retail store at 1742 Champa Street. The company occupied this building in 1895. Large(60" x 31 1/2" very detailed map of the mine workings at the 30' sublevel above level 13 in the Homer Mine. No date. But probably 1940's or 50's. For sale at a fixed price is this antique miners lamp. This is a blacksmith made iron oil lamp. Typically used in mines like tin mines where there was no combustible gas. At the time these would have normally used whale oil for fuel. Measures about 12 inches in length from end to end, the reservoir measures about 5 inches. It may be difficult to see but it is intricately made with a free pin inside a box so that the reservoir end will hang level at almost any angle that the spike is driven and not spill the oil. Rare old drill was hand-forged from 1" octagonal- or hexagonal-drill stock; flattened to four sides so that a new miner could get the feel of"quarter-turning" the drill each time he struck it. The lanterns are well worn and have seen a lot of use. The taller lantern stands 4 1/4" high. It is missing its filler cap and some of the metal at the end of the torch has broken off as seen in the pictures. The smaller lantern has all of its parts but has some dents and the lid is rusted in place to the top and will not open. I think if you sprayed it with penetrating oil it would loosen up but that's up to any new owner. This is a Pair of Antique or Vintage Original Wood& Iron Railroad Mining Ore Carts with Track. The two pieces of track each measure 34' 6" long and they are spaced 3' 2" apart. Each cart measures 3' 10" wide by 5' 5" long. The wheels measure 1' 2" in diameter. The carts can be hooked together and do roll when pulled. Please see pictures for details.
