I found it at an ore chute with a metal detector under a foot of over burden. It had most likely fallen to the floor and was covered with mine dust after the blast. I have kept it just as I found it with it's original mining candle to display exactly as it was used over 120 years ago in the mine. Husson miner's candlestick - mining candle holder
This is a Husson brand miner's candlestick. Made by the Knippenberg Manufacturing Company. The shaft, handle and hook are formed from a single piece of 3/16 square steel rod, with a stamped and rolled piece of sheet metal added to form the candle socket. The candle socket is held on with a single rivet. There are no manufacturer markings on this piece, it is only the characteristic shape of the candle socket that identifies it as the Husson brand. This candlestick is 11 inches long from the point to the back of the loop handle, and 3-1/8 inches to the top of the hook. The finish is bare steel with a grey patina; there are patches of old rust pitting on the shaft near the point and on the handle(the last photo shows the worst area of pitting) There are lots of handling marks, and all of the edges are worn from use. It's hard to imagine these candle holders were used in multiples underground to be able to use picks& hammers& chisels to extract gold or silver ore; and also used in early coal mining. There was always the danger of methane gas or coal dust explosions and fire when using the open flames of candles. This Sticking Tommy is about 9 1/2" long x 1 3/8" wide. The loop is flat on the top& bottom, but rounded on the sides. The ... morelong tapering point has been hand forged into a square shape, as is the base of the candle holder, which is then flattened and shaped into circular shape, creating a spring tension to hold the candle. The top Iron hook for hanging is a separate piece of Iron forged into the point. Thus, this Iron piece has sections of hand forged square, rounded and flat Iron. Here is a genuine vintage miner's candlestick. Called a"sticking Tommy" from over 100 years ago. This one is clearly marked"RUSSELL" on the shaft. Also. This style candle holder is made from only one rod of iron, pounded and bent to form this classic shape. Overall length is about 11 1/4" There is light rust, as expected, and a little candle wax on this used candlestick, which you could easily clean. The hook and point are still sharp. Antique forged STICKING TOMMY SPIKE Mining Candle Stick Holder - Unmarked
This auction is for an original metal candle holder for uses in mines and is sometimes called a"Sticking Tommy" or"Tommy Stick" They were normally fashioned by a blacksmith into a shape that could be wedged into wood timbers or into a crack in a rock wall by the point or hung from a cleft on the mine's wall. There are no manufacturer's marks on this stick. The candlestick is 8-7/8 inches long from the point of the shaft to the back of the loop handle and the hanging hook is 2-3/4 inches high. The tip that would have been placed in a crack of the wall has a square(four sided) configuration and transitions to a semicircular cross section in the rounded handle portion. Both tips are in good condition. The candle socket is an integral part of the body made from a single piece of metal and is still springy and in solid ... morecondition. Light pitting from old rust is present on mostly the back of the loop handle but virtually no pitting on the inside of the loop at the back of the handle or on the pointed end of the stick. The piece is solid and well made. I have found no cracks. Breaks, mends or repairs to this piece. I have not attempted to clean or polish this candle holder. I do not know the history of the piece.
