The mining camps did not have enough money to go around so everything bought and sold was traded in gold dust. Every miner had to carry a pocket scale to weigh his gold in troy weight to do trade. Would have once held a Full Shift measure of calcium carbide for miners' carbide lamps. Specifically advertising the Number 85"Matchless" Justrite and the"Justrite" The Jumbo Lamp No. 51. Wonderful graphics of these lamps. Tough to find one in such good condition, as these tins were meant to slip in and out of the back pocket of a miner and quickly wore the graphics off. Brass Caped Miners Pocket Oil Wick Lamp Refill Can
I got this with other mine items. I think it is a pocket refill can for turn of the century oil wick lamps but can not say for sure. You decide. It has a faint oil smell and a screen in the larger opening. The smaller spout is tilted but is not bent. No markings. Great condition with nice brass caps that operate smoothly. The main body is about 4.5 by 4 by 1.5 inches. Nice pocket size for the miner. Same metal and solder construction as the lamps. I have seen lots of oil wick mine lamps but ever one of these. Offered is a pair of antique JUST RITE carbide cans that recently came out of an old storage shed. They have a gold flashed finish over a thinly stamped steel body. The lids slide and work just fine. An Early Coal and Metal Miners' Pocketbook in nice original condition. This book measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1" and has a copyright date of 1905. 637+ pages. Leather binding with Gold Edges in amazing condition. A book of mining principles. Rules, formulas and tables and appears to be complete. Truly in amazing condition for being 109 years old. Tight binding. No writing, tears, page separations or stains. The only major flaw I can find is a red mark on the back cover. It would be hard to find a nicer copy. Overall a very nice. A super collectible mining book titled THE COAL AND METAL MINERS' POCKET BOOK for your consideration to add to your collection. From the Coal Mines of western PA circa 1905. Written inside front cover is R. M. Walker(can't make out the town) PA Jan 1906. Measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" Leather cover. Looks like Mr. Walker used it quite often. But not so much that it has detracted from the overall book. Pages have normal wear. All pages are intact. The last page has some damage but still there and does not ruin content. Leather cover has some wear, but I like it. Looks like it shows the work ethic and character of Mr. Walker. Thank you for looking.
