Old original photograph of the Tilden mine No. 9 and 10 shafts. Nice crisp image. The Tilden Mine was located at Bessemer. Gogebic Iron Range, Gogebic County, Michigan. The Gogebic Iron Range extends for 80 miles from Lake Namekagon. Wisconsin, in the west, to Lake Gogebic in Michigan, in the west. Nathaniel D. Moore uncovered ore deposits in the Penokee Gap near Bessemer in 1872, but it was not until 1884 that the first iron ore shipment was made. The Gogebic Range area experienced an initial speculative boom in the mid-1880s, and saw recurring booms and busts from 1884 to 1967. The area of greatest production was in the Ironwood. Michigan/Hurley, Wisconsin area. Some important producers in this area included the Norrie mine, Aurora mine, Ashland mine, Newport mine, Bonnie mine, Davis mine, Geneva mine and Pabst mine in Ironwood. Mass Mine "B" Shaft Miners, Keweenaw Copper Country Photograph Michigan Mining
Old photograph of the Mass Mine's'B" Shaft Dryhouse with a large group of miners with lamps on their caps. Nice crisp image. The Mass Mine was located at Mass City. Greenland Township, Ontonagon, Michigan. The Mass Mining Co. was organized in 1856 and worked 3 shafts sporadically until 1888. When the mining operations ceased. The Mass Mine was consolidated into the Mass Consolidated Mining Company in 1899, along with the Ridge, Evergreen and Ogima mines and the Merimac and Hazard prospects, which had a total combined production of 11,131,023 lbs of copper prior to consolidation. The property carried six of the seven amygdaloid veins in the Evergreen belt. Mass Consolidated developed four shafts, A through D on the Mass property, 5 shafts on the Mayflower property, and 5 shafts on the Old Colony property.
