Here is a Permissible Miners Safety Lamp by Koehler Mfg. Co. No. 201 in good condition. Has original hook and stands over 10" high. Has colliery lamp tag#113. Glass is good with no cracks. Some Safety Lamp info below. The idea of the safety lamp was a great innovation to the mining industry as it allowed a miner to bring a flame lamp into the mine without a risk of explosion. This feature has to do with the sealed environment of the flame. These lamps would typically be fueled with a solvent. Benzine I believe. Many people seem to think this lamp ran on carbide which is incorrect. Inside the chimney top are 2 stainless steel screens that allow air and gas to pass through and affect the flame inside, but since flame does not want to go through a tube, each space of the screen, acting like a tube, would not cause an explosion. The flame's ... moreheight and color indicated either a flammable and dangerous air quality, or by going small and/or extinguishing indicated a dangerous lack of oxygen in the mine. WELCOME! I wish I could capture pictures of it working. But I took it apart to dry out the fuel a long time ago. I picked it up from an antique store that was going out of business two years ago. Total burn time since I've owned it is around an hour. Plenty of wick and flint left. Easy to operate. Like most others out there, I don't have the tool that is specifically made for the fuel door, but it comes open easily with a fork or 2 toothpicks. The aluminum has pitting that is common on these.
