It is the type used by hard rock miners in the West before lantern technology advanced for mine use. No makers mark. This Tommy is 10 inches long. This is the type that was stuck into the miner's soft hat and then into shoring timbers when at the work site. Sticking Tommys really go way back and were often used to hold the fat lamp(Bette Lamp) up and away from a wooden beam or log wall in the cabin. It got the light up high and also the heat and flame away from the very flamable beam or wall. Payment is due within 3 days or I may re-list the piece! Study the pictures before bidding. UP FOR BID IS AN ORIGINAL 1800'S MINERS"STICKING TOMMY" CANDLE HOLDER STRAIGHT FROM AN ABANDONED GOLD MINE IN WESTERN WASHINGTON FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF MINING! This"Sticking Tommy" was found by me in a small gold mine adit in Western Washington. This"Tommy" was probably left behind when the miner lost it or forgot to take it out with him. I found it behind a large rock under loose dirt/rock on the floor about 15 feet in. The signal on my Falcon MD20 went off as I reached around a small opening where I couldn't see. I carefully dug it out with my hands and here it is. If it's such a great find. Why am I selling it? Good question. The answer is, TO FURTHER SUPPORT MY GOLD PROSPECTING ADVENTURES! This piece of americana belongs with a collector. I have photos and the thrill of finding it. It's back ... moreto the field for me! If you notice the long"sticking" part has been bent at a 90 degree angle. I have never seen one like this and it is quite unique. It measures about 4& 1/2 inches long. It is encrusted with pieces of rusted iron and some small stones that have become attached. Usually you see nice clean ones. Some are forged reproductions, and some were used but unlike this one. Not left behind in the gold mine for over 100 years. It does pull apart to put a candle in as it should. For mining or vintage collectors. This could be the find of lifetime. Altogether this"Sticking Tommy" is the real deal. I know because I found it! It looks absolutely beautiful as it is. It has character and I wonder about the miner who lost it. For your consideration is a hand forged iron"sticking tommy. Item was purchased in Ishpeming. Michigan, and undoubtedly was used in an area mine. Note: this item has been used and thus shows the wear that is typical. These were hammered into the mine wall to serve as lighting for the mine workers. A candle was inserted into the bracket. The hook was used to hold the sticking tommy into the miner's hat so the sticking tommy could be used for light by the miners. This sticking tommy is 7 1/4 inches in length. Sticking Tommy" Miner's candlestick, candle holder measures 9 1/2" long. It was Blacksmith forged. Mid to late 19th century, used by miners for underground light. It was spiked into wood beams or crevices in rock to light the way. These were mainly used starting in the 1850s for the hard rock mining of gold. This Sticking Tommy has marks along the spike and hook made by the Blacksmith. It has some rust. A little spot of paint, and slightly bent areas including the tip, spike, hook and candle holder. All bends are minor and the candle holder is still quite good looking and displays well. Nice. Original forged piece of Western U. S. 19th century mining history.
