Kenneth E. Behring Center A miner’s light was essential to their labor. Without light there was no sight. No work, and no wages. But this essential light was also lethal. Open flames could ignite the inflammable gas especially prevalent in coal mines ... moreand mining explosions with hundreds of casualties was a common occurrence in the late 19 th and early 20 th century. Miners often carried open flames into the mines in the form of candles and hanging lamps. And later wore the open flames of carbide lamps and oil-wick lamps on their caps and helmets. Before 1850. Miners would use candles or small lamps that were hung from crevices or hammered into timbers near their work. From 1850 until around 1915, miner’s headgear generally consisted of cloth or canvas hats with leather brims and metal lamp brackets on the forehead that allowed them to hang a source of light on the front of their cap. Caps served the ancillary use of protecting the miner’s eyes from smoke or soot and their head from small bumps. But its main purpose was as a mount for their lamps.

Steampunk Edison Miner's Cap Lamp Battery Operated - Working Condition
This an awesome vintage electric piece would make and excellent addition to anybody's miner collection or steampunk outfit. The Edison Model P Cap Lamp was first used in mines in 1912. The back of the battery box has two'loops' to hang it on a 1" belt or strap. And the lamp is on a 43" flexible cord. The lamp can be attached to a helmet. or whatever, depending on your imagination. There is a twist style swith to turn the lamp on and off. The bulb is a GE82. This could be a very handy item for spelunkers, miners, chimney sweeps, firefighters, adventurers, or anybody who needs hands free lighting. The lens unscrews from the lamp housing to release the lens, seal, and bulb. There is a safety latch to keep the lens from coming loose which can be locked in place with a cotter pin or bit of wire- there latch works perfectly ... morebut there is no pin or wire to allow for inspection of the bulb. The case is stamped with all the manufacturer's marks: one side- EDISON MODEL P CAP LAMP. MADE BY THOMAS A. EDISON INCORPORATED, WEST ORANGE, NJ, U.S.A. with the Thomas A. Edison signature. Other side- PERMISSIBLE ELECTRIC CAP LAMP, APPROVAL NO. 26, ISSUED TO THOMAS A. RARE AND UNUSUAL ANTIQUE MINERS WHALE OIL LAMP WITH ROOSTER FILLER CAP
I BELIEVE THIS WHALE OIL MINERS LAMP WAS MADE IN FRANCE IN THE 1800's. I CAN MAKE OUT ONLY A FEW LETTERS ON THE BASE. AS SEEN IN THE PICTURE. IT STANDS 8 INCHES TALL AND ABOUT 5 1/2 INCHES WIDE AT THE HINGES. IT COMES WITH THE PINCHERS USED TO PULL THE HOT WICK UP AS IT BURNS SHORTER. THE FILLER CAP IS A SOLID BRASS ROOSTER/COCK THAT ALSO DOUBLES AS THE PRESSURE VENT. IT HAS BEEN IN DAMP MINES AS EVIDENCED BY IT'S RUSTY PATINA. THERE IS EITHER A SERIAL NUMBER OR A MINE INVENTORY NUMBER OF 3087 ON THE TOP OF THE HANDLE. THE HANDLE DOES HINGE DOWN SO THE LAMP CAN LIE FLAT. jy.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bkw4sjm5%3Ejy-13f41b9e0e5-0xfd-

Flexo Band Cool Cap "Turtle Shell" Mining Helmet w/ Auto-Lite Carbide Lamp
Up for auction we have a Flexo Band Cool Cap. Or more commonly known as a"turtle shell" hard hat for miners. This hat is made of reinforced molded leather, and has upstanding ribs for ventilation. This particular hat appears to be a size small, and has a circumference of 22" The right side of the brim is stamped with the number 96. Given it's age, the helmet is in great condition. Typical scratches and dings, but all of the threading and roping is intact with no breaks or fraying. It has not been cleaned in any way, but could use a good dusting with a dry cloth. We'll leave that up to the buyer. Also included is the Auto-Lite carbide lamp with blade hook. This is a smaller size lamp. 3.5" in height with a 2" diameter base. This lamp could use some restoration to get it into working order. The blade hook has ... morea soldering repair that appears to have been made many years ago. The base of the lamp was wrapped in black cotton tape, most likely to take the place of a missing bumper grip. The reflector also has some dents and dings. All vintage items are sold AS-IS. I try to be as acurate and honest as possible in the listing description and take plenty of photos for the buyer to see. If you have any addtional questions or need more specific info. Antique Autolite Carbide Mining Cap Lamp
Here is a good working Autolite Carbide Miners Cap Lamp. I put a new gasket. Filter and flint in. I fired it up for about 15 minutes. It worked great. It's not a shiny and perfect looking wall hanger but just a good looking working lamp. The reflector is 4" in diameter. The reflector is slightly bent but could easily be bent back to perfect. The lamp shows signs of it's use in the mines. Has a real nice aged color to it called patina. You could clean it up and polish it if you just want it as a collectable wall hanger. Or you could use it for caving as it works really good.

Miners Cap, Oil Wick Lamp, Fueled by Lard and Kerosine Mixture 1850 - 1920 Solid
This is an oil wick lamp that was connected to a miners cap by the hook opposite the wick spout. These were used in the mines from 1850- 1920 when they were replaced by carbide lamps. These look primitive. But were a welcome change from the candles that were used before. The miners burnt the cheapest fuel they could, a mixture of lard and kerosene, that gave off a heavy black smoke that covered the miners inside and out with soot. This lamp has a heavy build up of soot and surface rust in areas, so any identifying marks are unreadable. It is 3 3/4 inches high, and measures 5 inches from hook tip to spout tip. The hinged lid to the fuel reservoir works well. Opens and seals shut. There are no holes or open seems and no dents. It is made of a magnetic metal. There is some wick left in the spout, and if you look inside, it looks fairly clean. ... moreI can see no reason why this old oil wick lamp couldn't be used today, for its original purpose of lighting a miners way through the mine.

Antique Edison Coal Mining Permissible Electric Cap Lamp Battery & Light Model P
Antique Edison Coal Mining Permissible Electric Cap Lamp Battery& Light. Model P Cap Lamp Battery Made in West Orange NJ. USA, measures 5" x 8.5" x 1.5" The back has belt mounting loops. It is heavy, 4 lbs. I imagine it was difficult carrying this around all day on their belt. Has Bureau of Mines seal and Thomas A Edison signature. 3.5” diameter Bakelite helmet lamp also reads Edison Safety Lamp around rim, and has GE Mazda bulb. The battery pack is still shiny metal, but has some character dents, and some age discoloration. The lamp cord rubber feels dried out some, and is completely covered with friction tape, which was a tacky cloth tape used by the miners. The lamp mounts on a helmet, I believe, and has an on/off knob. It is not presently operational. When you shake the battery pack, it sheds some coal dust or inside ... morecontents from under the lid. I have not been successful in opening it. Great old Mining display piece, probably 1920s. See photos. Winning bidder pays with Paypal. 6 lbs. shipping. See my other vintage Mining Collectable auctions. Thanks.I will combine shipping on multiple purchases when possible. This is a GUY'S DROPPER miners carbide cap lamp. It is in excellent condition. Has a couple of small dings in the carbide chamber bottom. Very nice reflector. Good patina. Has burner tip. My hands are not strong enough to open the carbide chamber bottom. So hope this is not an issue, if so please do not bid. I would think this is a collector lamp not an operating lamp.

Dunlaps brand oil wick miner's cap lamp - mining
This is a Dunlaps brand oil wick cap lamp. It is made of tin plated steel with crimped or riveted and soldered joints. The lamp stands 3-1/8 inches tall to the top of the lid. And 4 inches tall to the top of the spout. The base measures 1-9/16 inches in diameter. The lamp has no rust anywhere, and is clean and shiny inside; it does not appear to have ever been fired. There are two small dents on the underside of the top lid; the dents are not visible when the lid is closed, and they do not interfere with the functioning of the lid. This lamp has no broken joints or missing parts. The manufacturer's lettering is pressed into the shoulder of the lamp from the inside, and says: DUNLAPS PITTSBURGH" This item will ship via USPS in a cardboard box to USA destinations only(no foreign shipping on this item)

Frostburg (Zais) miner's oil wick cap lamp - mining
This is a Zais brand oil wick miners lamp. The lamp is made of steel with crimped and soldered joints; it also has a double spout wall. The lamp stands 2-1/8 inches tall from the base to the top of the lid. And 2-1/2 inches to the top of the spout. The base is 1-5/8 inches in diameter. The manufacturers lettering is on the side of the lamp(photo number one) and has"FROSTBURG" and an acrostic of the name"BRUCE" in an oval shield. The Zais Company was a family owned business, and the names of family members(stamped into the lamps as unreadable acrostics) were used as a code to identify different runs of lamps as they were manufactured. This lamp has a small bend at the edge of the lid(which was probably deliberate, to make the lamp easier to open) some small dents at the base of the spout(photo number six) and a few small ... moredents on and just above the manufacturers lettering shield. There is rust inside the lamp. This lamp has no broken joints, cracks, or missing parts. The brown spots on the outside of the lamp appear to be remnants of soldering flux(photos two and four) This item will ship via USPS in a cardboard box to USA destinations only(no foreign shipping on this item)

The lamp stands 2-3/4 inches tall to the top of the lid, and 3 inches tall to the top of the spout. The base is 1-5/8 inches in diameter. I have listed the lamp as"used" because of tarnish(the lamp neck is made of brass) and age stains, but it is unfired and has never been charged with fuel. The hook on the rear is for attaching to the Miner's hard hat. The top has a hinged lid with a tiny brass pressure relief tube on top. The spout held the wick, and the 1 5/8" diameter milk can shaped base was filled with solid or liquid fuel. Weight is 2.5 ounces. This piece is 100% original, in fine condition overall with no holes, alterations or damage; all with a beautiful, untouched, natual aged dark grey patina to the tin that collectors covet. This piece was cherry picked from a large Mining collection. Actual age is unknown, but probably dates to the late 1800's to the early 1900's. This eye appealing piece would b

Antique Vintage Thomas EDISON Electric Miner's Cap Lamp Metal Case Salvage
Antique Vintage Thomas EDISON Electric Miner's Cap Lamp Metal Case Salvage Description: Antique Vintage EDISON Electric Miner's Cap Lamp Metal Case This is all that remains of an antique Thomas A Edison Portable Miner's Electric Cap Lamp from about 1890. Originally this case would have held the power pack which was attached to a cord and lamp. The case would have been worn on a belt and the lamp would have been attached to the miner's cap. I can only imagine what happened to the other parts to this case as it is such a crushed condition. As is. It is still very attractive with the embossed inscription on the front that reads- Permissible Electric Cap Lamp, Department of Commerce, Bureau of Mines(in circle featuring the American eagle) Approval No. 25, Issued to Thomas A. Edison, Inc. Caution, The Battery and headpiece housing ... moreshall not be unlocked or opened by the lamp user except in the lamp house. This is a case constructed of metal. With two metal slots on the back to accommodate a belt. One small part remains on what would have possibly been a strap handle, The case itself measures 5-1/4" width x 1-1/2" depth x 7" height and weighs almost 14 ounces. Discovered at a recent estate sale. It is in the condition as pictured above. As mentioned previously, it is missing its top, contents and accessories. Nevertheless, the embossed lettering certainly adds to its decorative and collectible historical appeal. Thanks for looking. Please email me if you have any questions! I am always happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR THE SHIPPING COSTS OUTSIDE OF U.S.A. Payment: PayPal only. Please.
