Ed's XR

Woah, this is something else (we agree with Ed's daughter though...) G

Hey Gary-
Here you go...pics of the XR that I am building. I think it's been four years. Thankful that I have something else to ride!

Engine is one of the NOS XR1000's that still surface every once in a while. It's got Phil Darcy heads, Branch manifolds, Axtell .500 lift cams, Cosworth pistons, and cylinders that are made from two sets of XR750 ones sawed up, stacked & sleeved for the extra stroke.

Frame is an NOS Terry Knight job with big Ceriani forks, and Sandy Kosman's wheels and adjustable triple clamps. Fuel tank is a one-off sort of Sportser/XR marriage that Fred at Race-tec built to my specs. Oil tank is the bane of my existence right
now, but I think I will get through it.

What else? Daughter recently came home from college and her comments about the taillight have me feeling kinda self-conscious. Street tires for inspection purposes, cool ISR levers, Oberon mirror, Alloy Art headlight. Exhaust is held on with string, but as soon as I get some more bends from Burn's Stainless, I will cut it apart and make adjustments for my tall cylinders.

Can't wait to see Sideburn #8
Best, Ed

Michele and Giovanni's Christmas adventure

What was I saying about loving people who prove you don't need the 'perfect' bike for every occasion. This is Michele Lupi and Giovanni Bussei out on their bikes just before Christmas. Michele, editor of GQ Italy, is the one with some common sense. Giovanni is the one with the horse chestnut for a brain and Harley XR1000 keys in his frozen hand.

Read about when Michele and Giovanni went riding in the snow with Valentino Rossi in Sideburn 4. Written by Rossi himself. G

Bussei off-road master class

Michele, the editor of GQ Italy, sent these in. He went trail riding with Giovanni Bussei a couple of weeks ago. Michele was on his Yamaha 450. Nice bit of GoreTex, Cordura, all that. Giovanni was on an XR1000 in a wooly jumper, leather trousers, pisspot lid and goggles. Look how far he made it up the hill on that thing! And check out the number plate and lights. This is Giovanni's road bike. I met him in Torino when I was working out there and he turned up on this with a huge wicker top box basket on the back. Legend.
If you don't know who Giovanni is, he's the just about the finest character in world racing. Not short of a bob or two, he spurns hotels or fancy motorhomes, preferring to sleep in his car and shower with the same hosepipe the team wash his bikes down with. He's raced in WSB, AMA, BSB and now FIM Supermoto. And he wants to race flat track. GI

Grazie Michele!
