Essential Viewing: Flat Track Racing Young Matadors

You must make the time to watch this. The first 20 mins are the best.
For regular readers of Sideburn you'll recognise a lot of names - Steve Eklund (and this season - Sideburn 13) Steve Morehead from (SB12); Mert Lawwill (SB13); Skip Aksland (SB11); Jay Springsteen (SB9); Scott Parker (SB8); Alex Jorgenson (SB7)...
This was sent to us by Dustin Aksland, son of former GNC pro Skip.

Hope all is well, by the looks of Sideburn it seems like you are pretty busy.
Just wanted to share this video with you, it finally appeared online after many many years. You might have seen it, if so, sorry for the introduction.
This short film follows Jay Springsteen through the 1979 season in pursuit of his 4th GNC title.
I probably watched this film 400 times when I was a kid, because it features my pops getting second at the San Jose Mile. Eventually someone recorded over the film, (have to love VHS) and I thought it was gone forever. Then a few days ago a family friend posted it on Facebook. He runs a cool flat tracking group on Facebook, you should check it out, there are some great little gems on there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/WCDTs/
Take care, D

Metro x Springer's MX250 x Scott Parker

From Don at Metro Racing.

Here's a picture of Jay Springsteen's factory HD MX250 that he lent me for Scott Parker to ride at our 2 day AMA Vintage National event at the Square Deal Riders in Harpursville,NY on June 29th&30th. What is the connection with Parker to this bike you say. It is the very bike that Scotty won his first short track national on. Jay was feeling ill and lent the bike to Scotty. It will be awesome to see Scotty on this bike again.

Garry Stuart Harley Pics

Springer on the Sportster Cup bike. We have a Who, When, Why interview with him in Sideburn 9.
Back in my first full-time job in magazines, at Streetfighters back in 95, 96 -ish, I worked with Garry Stuart a few times. Back then he was travelling to America all the time, when I still thought London was a different planet. He got in touch this week to say he's putting some of his work, old and new, online. These are some of my faves he's posted at Harley Pics G

Underdog

SB#7 cover story. The first time in the history of flat track racing that a Kawasaki has won a national Mile race. And Bryan Smith didn't stop his record racing there...BP

Springfield Mile Photos

Great shot that shows exactly where riders take one hand off the bars for drafting down the straights. Johnny Lewis (10) has two hands on while Jake Johnson (5) is reaching for the fork leg. It's right there, give or take a few bike lengths.
Nope, that's not Steve Red Max leading them out, but Willie McCoy who came 4th in the Main. There were 17 finishers (Brandon Robinson was a DNF). The fastest lap of all 17 riders was a 34-something second lap. How close is that?
Werner, Smith and Springsteen get the winning habit. I wonder how much it hurts Harley to see their old boys winning with a green machine.
Big crowd, beautiful grandstand.
Michael Toon, Pro Singles winner.
Zakk Palmer (81c), Toon (22L), Michael LaBelle (20T), Brad Baker behind.
Mees and Carr.
95C is JD Beach who jumped from the Pro Singles to the Expert twins this weekend and made the Main at the first attempt. Classy. 65 is Cory Texter (Shayna Texter's brother). Condolences to the Texter family for the untimely death of Randy Lee.
Mees and Carr again.
JD Beach, two-hand tuck. New PM front, old PM rear.
Carr, Mees and Johnson.
Joe Kopp and Sammy Halbert. Kopp scored a few points back on Sammy, finishing one place in front. Uncharacteristically, neither of them made the Dash for Cash.

Indy Mile photos

Crowd pleasers. Springsteen, Smith, Werner. I hope Kawasaki are giving them some love, because the Green Machine aren't getting many high profile wins elsewhere (Though we know Tom Sykes and Ryan Farquhar are doing the business on ZX-10s).
Smith, Carr, Bonsey, Halbert, Johnson. The Dash for Cash. Kopp qualified but didn't start.
Nicky Hayden did demo laps on the Lloyd Brothers Ducati 1000cc framer. He's just put in a request for a Sideburn T-shirt. No shit.
Right, when was the last time a multi-cylinder Kawasaki won a GNC main?
Do anything it takes to tuck in down the straights. 26 Brandan Bergen, 51 Steve Murray.
Carr led the main, but came in (a still great) second.
Matt Weidman on a high line. He finished 9th behind Mees.
Smith and Carr.
Now then, is that Fatty from Des Moines in a prototype FTWCo T-shirt, trucker cap and camo shorts in this AMA crowd shot?
JD Beach won the Pro Singles support race.
Larry Pegram on the other Lloyd Brothers Ducati 1000. Read about this bike in Sideburn 4.
Still got it. Chris Carr won the Dash for Cash from Sammy Halbert.
Kopp was back on the Ducati and came sixth, one place behind title rival Sammy Halbert. Sammy's trailing Smokin Joe in the combined championship, but leading the twins title race. We have a fantastic interview with Sammy in Sideburn 6

It's a racing kind of weekend

Been bouncing a few emails to and fro with Donzilla of fantastic T-shirt company Metro Racing. He said

"It's a racing kind of day tomorrow. I'm racing my world famous Bultaco wkr powered Astro. World famous because of the legs that have been thrown over it. Gary Nixon, Dave Aldana, Georgie Price, Rusty Rodgers, and Jay Springsteen! Best of luck," Don

Do we have to tell anyone this is Springer on board?
Good luck Don, tell us how you did.

Look what we found!

Jay on the Blast.
Here's the story. 'In September of 2003, Jay Springsteen visited Japan for a demo ride at the purpose-built
'Field of Dreams' dirttrack event held in the mountains of Nagano.'

Sundance Blast

Now, a standard Buell Blast couldn't pull the cock off a chocolate mouse, but some people make nice flat trackers out of them. Like the legendary Sundance crew from Japan.
It's got Springer's 9 on it, and we know Jay raced Sundance's Daytona Weapon Harley twin road racers at Speed Week. We'd have loved to have seen him on this.
Nice under engine mounts too.
