Ornamental Conifer x Ken Block

I like Ken Block's YouTube sensational Gymkhanas. I watch them with my boy, but I wouldn't normally post them on the blog and wouldn't have done this new one if Mr Block wasn't wearing an Ornamental Conifer jacket!

Nico, Mr Ornamental Conifer, is now based in LA and concentrating more on art art than commercial art. So fewer jackets, fewer helmets, fewer petrol tanks, more framed work and objets d'art (painted bottles, slingshots)…

Read about the Royal Enfield Ornamental Conifer painted for us back in 2011 (after Sideburn was turned onto the then barely known painter by Death Spray Custom) in Sideburn 10.

The film is well worth your tea break. G

The Sideburn Royal Enfield (from the cover of SB10) is on Bike Exif.
This bike was built by CFM in Lincolnshire, with help from Co-Built, Steve Adams, Rupert Paul, Joshua Crasto, Jason Cursley, Lowbrow Customs and Ornamental Conifer and wouldn't have happened without Watsonian Squire.

Stunning studio photos by Paul Bryant. If you want your bike photographing and looking this good, get in touch with him. paul@paulbryantphotography.com
Studio shoots start at £200.
He's based near Stamford, in Lincolnshire. G

You don't need a smartphone...

...to enjoy the delights of Sideburn's instagram feed. There are almost daily updates on the feed, that is hosted on the Sideburn facebook page. You don't even need to sign up for facebook either. Just follow this link
@sideburnmag
We very rarely put the same stuff on Instagram that we put on the blog, either.

If you do have a smartphone - iPhone or Android device-thing - or iPad, you can download the instagram app for free and be safe in the knowledge your attention span will wither down to 23.5 seconds maximum.

Once you've done that you can follow @sideburnmag and all the cool cats who used to do blogs, but now can't be arsed. Not like us!

If you have no idea what Instagram is, it's like that Twitter you've heard all about but with photos (Twitter added a photo to their original word only app to combat Instagram, I think). Users put up a photo, short video or a photo and caption and people can see them in a real-time feed on their phone or iPad. I'm totally addicted to it. It's a combination of rad, sick, and awesome. We're totally stoked to have 5800 followers. Killing it, etc... G

Best of Britannia

A new exhibition previews this weekend and Sideburn and Co-Built are going to have a trio of bikes on show.
It's not a bike show, but has been curated to promote the best of British design, manufacturing and culture.
It's taking place this weekend, October 5-7th in Clerkenwell, London.
There are stands, DJs and talks. If you're thinking of launching a company in Britain, or growing one, trying to work for one or just supporting, this sounds like the place to be.

More details at Best of Britannia. G

UPDATE: Just noticed this is post 3500 on the Sideburn blog. Thanks for visiting.

SouthSiders Scoot About

Every 5 minutes keys to bikes would be tossed in the air for someone else to take a spin around the grounds. Not too sure the regulars of Chateau Brindos were too happy with the noise. Or by the sight of Gary, mine and Kristina's pants in the swimming pool when it got toasty later on. BP

Convergence

We put up a post about Albion BMX magazine here. And for the latest issue's cover they have used Nico Ornamental Conifer who painted our Royal Enfield. Small world. G

Wheels and Waves, Biarritz pt.1

Just back from the Sarf of France. We bombed down in the van, bikes and all our stock in the back, 850 miles non-stop, had three great nights and two great days, then did the same back in one hit. Lots more photos coming from the Pan-European love-in. Big thanks to Vincent and the Southsiders for this unforgettable event. G

The Stig

The Stig plugged in his iPod, turned up the Vivaldi, donned his Simpson Bandit, and hit the mud at Dirt Quake in the Street Tracker Class. His Mum is not going to happy about the state of his over-alls but we were more than happy to see the Sideburn project Royal Enfield flying. photo by James Boddy. BP

SB#10 Cover Star

Sideburn #10 is finally at the printers. Up to just a few days before our deadline, we had still not shot the planned cover which was a bit nail biting. But it all came together including the weather down on the Neave farm. Tim Neave is not your average hoodie wearing yoof. Put him on a flat tracker - even one he's never ridden before - a '50s style rigid at that, and he's more elegant that Robin Cousins on ice - check out the poise of his be-trainered foot tickling the surface of the dust. The definition of Panache.
Of course we dressed him more sensibly for the actual shoot, than the RSD retro Bell jet helmet, and tracky-bums worn for the test run shown here. Not. BP

Project Enfield: It Lives!

This is Carl and Frankie from CFM taking our Enfield for its first ever trial run yesterday. Converting it from EFi was tricky and the Enfield had another trick up its sleeve that had Carl scratching his head. Big thanks to Rupe and Josh and the guys at Enfield specialisits Hitchcocks. Biggest thanks of all to CFM. Legends.
Read all about the bike in Sideburn 10, out in March. G

Project Enfield update

We had to get Sideburn's Project Enfield looking finished for Royal Enfield UK's stand at the Motorcycle Live Show at the NEC, late last year. Thanks to CFM, Co-Built, Revolution Custom Paint (who did the basecoat) and Ornamental Conifer (signwriting star) it was done. But, big but, because we converted it from EFi to carb we didn't have it running. According to Royal Enfield UK, no one had converted one in the UK and they didn't know how to do it, but Josh at Indimotard Adventures in India said it was easy, so we asked his advice and he sorted the required parts and sent them from India.
As soon as they arrived we took the bike and the parts, including the old loom, to Rupert Paul, who, after 30 years of not liking auto electrics now loves making looms. We have swapped his work and time for some of the parts we replaced on our 2009 Bullet Classic. He'll use them for his own Enfield project (see below).

We're at the fingers crossed stage, because we want the bike running soon so it can go in Sideburn 10.
Below is the wiring diagram Rupert has designed.
Rupe's own Enfield project (below) used to belong to the late John Robinson, a former colleague of Rupe's and a legend of UK bike journalism. Rupe is doing up the bike, that hasn't run for about three decades, for John's grandchildren to ride. What a lovely fella he is. Our front forks went straight in the old Meteor Minor. The back wheel is a bit trickier.

CFM on the web

We talk about CFM a lot on this blog. Carl (the C of CFM) is definitely a Sideburn brother. He rolled our turd of an FT500 in glitter (that's him testing it below), then did a lot of the hard work on our project Royal Enfield. He's also worked on all the other bikes I've owned in the last three years.
Carl is a low-overhead thinker, a do-er, a fixer, a specials builder and practical sorter-outer. He loves bikes. He races bikes. He likes Twisted Sister too. Don't hold that against him.
Anyway, CFM now have a website - CFM-Ruskington. If you have a project you've stalled with or would like a bike modifying, it's worth bookmarking their site. Above is the Dresda Triumph he built a few years ago. Tasty, eh? G

Project RE Paint & Discs

The last couple of months have been a mad scramble. We finished Sideburn 9, organised and promoted Rollerburn and (nearly) finished our Royal Enfield project. We couldn't have done all that without a bunch of skilled mates who are a big part of the Sideburn family.
We didn't make much of a fuss of the Enfield, because it was going on Royal Enfield's stand at the NEC show (on till tomorrow), and we didn't want to steal their thunder. And it's going in the next magazine. But we love the end result. Carl at CFM did a great job bringing it all together and Nicolai at Ornamental Conifer laid on the fantastic graphics and lettering.
Pull Your Finger Out is a phrase O.C. uses all the time, and it could be a motto of Sideburn. He paints jackets, helmets, bikes, signs, walls, cricket bats, but he doesn't do pinstriping.
Thanks to O.C. and thanks to Death Spray Custom for introducing us in the first place.
Another element of Project RE that friends helped us sort out was the brake discs. When you change forks and wheels, getting the discs to fit without adapters between fork and caliper (I hate those adapters) is a big headache. British company EBC made discs for our Project FT, but couldn't do these in time due to moving factories (and us not giving them enough time). Th other two British brake companies I called and emailed didn't even reply. So I spoke to Pepo at Radical Ducati in Madrid. I'd visited him earlier in the year for my day job and he sang the praises of Discaciatti in Northern Italy. I sketched out the centres, emailed, paid up and the discs arrived eight days later. Discaciatti might sound like Italian for brake disc, but it's the family name and I dealt with Ms. Discaciatti, the founder's daughter. Great service and they fit perfectly. G

Project Enfield nearly finished

We have a few things to sort, but Royal Enfield needed looking finished for their stand at the Motorcycle Live, NEC Show, so the final issues will have to wait.
The wonderful signwriting was carried out by Ornamental Conifer who will be at Rollerburn. The Enfield won't - the two biggest shows in UK motorcycling clash. It will be featured in SB10, out in 2012 - which is also Royal Enfield's Centenary year.
Thanks to Royal Enfield and all who helped with this project, especially Carl CFM who did most of the hard work, a lot of the fabrication and the assembly.
Co-Built made the exhaust. It is neat. G

Sideburn Royal Enfield coming together

Stingray seat by Steve Adams.
Low mileage engine cleaned up nicely.
One-off Renthal sprocket from B&C Express.
Co-Built pipe. Modified engine plates.
Sideburn's Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 500 project is looking amazing. We trusted many of the the people who made a great job of Project FT and some new ones.

CJ Powder Coatings in Grimsby turned the frame, seat and other parts around in three days. Les, one of the owners there, is a sand racer and they're brilliant to deal with. Just send a part and they mask it up. Highly recommended for all you powder coating needs. They don't have a website, but click the link for their details.
Lowbrow Customs supplied the David Bird hardtail loops and Co-Built modified the frame to fit.
Our friend Jason did us a great deal on the Mikuni flatslide and A&A/PM rear brake assembly. Thanks Jason.
Co-Built made the exhaust. Just look at it.
Steve Adams covered the cutdown Enfield twin seat. It's an amazing job. Call him on 07958 990962, next time you need any kind of seat trimming.

The rest is down to Carl at CFM. We can't rate him highly enough. Need a project building or finishing? Go to him. He's quick, good and reasonably priced. He won't take the work in and then sit on it for months like a lot of people out there. He's worked on five different bikes of mine now and I don't want to go anywhere else. He's based near Sleaford.

The paint is nearly finished and the one-off brake discs are being made in Italy, right now. When the bike is finished it will be in Sideburn 10 and on the Royal Enfield stand for the eight day Motorcycle Live NEC show. If you're there check it out, but don't go on the first Saturday, because that's Rollerburn day. G
