This has been one of the most interesting, compelling, controversial GP seasons ever. Multiple winners and intrigue; nearly Rossi's greatest comeback after being written off when Marquez burst on the scene; Rossi's Malaysian Marquez Meltdown. Because of the Sepang-bang Rossi starts the final round, at Valencia today, leading the championship but on the back row of the grid of 26 riders, as a punishment. His teammate, Lorenzo, is in pole and second in the championship.
In morning warm-up, Lorenzo was second fastest, behind Marquez, Rossi fourth, behind Pol Espargaro and ahead of Pedrosa. There's just 0.65s between the fastest lap of first and fifth.
Motogp.com has a a Grand Finale calculator (screen grab above). If Rossi finishes ahead of Lorenzo he wins, simple (but highly unlikely). Also, if Lorenzo wins the race, he is champion (UPDATE: Rossi could have come second. I was getting carried away), but you can pull the two contenders around in relation to each other to see where Rossi has to finish, to be champion, if Lorenzo comes third. It could put off the nail-biting for, oh 2-3 minutes, in the build up to today's race.
The photos below, of me with Rossi a couple of times among the many times I've interviewed him, show you where my allegiances lie. G

Di Traverso Party
Marco Belli (above, #6) threw a sliding celebration and Sideburn contributor Peter Guld was invited along...
Unless you're a pensioner, looking for a relaxing weekend, it’s a normally not a good idea to travel to Misano Adriatico, one week before the Misano MotoGP race. This year was an exception. Italian flat track legend, Marco Belli invited me for a party that he organised to say a big thank you, to his partners, who were involved in his Di Traverso Flat Track School.
The list of the partners is impressive, companies like Deus Milano, Riders Magazine, Yamaha Italia, MotoShop Parma, Dainese, Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli... There was no question, if the Italian holds a party, it will be different. Belli invited his long term friend Graziano Rossi, the father of Valentino, and many other Italian and European flat track riders and race car drivers. Later in the afternoon Loris Reggiani, former-GP star, arrived at the event, and didn’t hesitate before jumping in a car. Drivers gave lucky passengers rides around the track in muscle cars. People could put their name down and, of course, the longest list was next to the name Rossi, but Graziano was happy with it, because it meant he could spend time in a car, not in the sun.
Belli and Signor Rossi planned car vs. bike races, but it was postponed, so the biggest surprise just came when the flat track ace, after few practice laps in a cross-car, showed up in a big BMW and raced against Graziano and his Audi R8.
The fans shouted like it was the last lap of MotoGP race when these two mad Italians produced the hardest car race of the event.
It’s cliche, but true: If you are going to an event where a guy whose name is Rossi is involved, it will be something special. After the event, during the night, a blonde lady was driving a go kart, prepared with dirt tyres, pretty fast. She was in shadow, but seems to be like a pro, and she was sliding crossed with full throttle. I realised it was Graziano’s daughter, Clara Rossi (below).
At the end of the great event no one was in doubt that Marco Belli said thanks to his partners with style.

When GI met Valentino Rossi 2
Ever since I heard about Rossi building a riding ranch in his home town of Tavullia I wanted to ride it. And going to prove it's not what you know, but who you know, in early September this year I managed, being the first journalist in the world to do a lap of Rossi's private test track.
It was all down to my connections with Rolling Stone Italy, for whom I write a monthly column on motorcycle culture.
It was ten years since Rossi was on their cover, dressed as Elvis and the editor, Michele Lupi, wanted to catch up and chose me to write the exclusive interview. The feature was even mentioned on the national 8pm news.
It's out in Rolling Stone Italy, December issue (with Ligabue on the cover). GI
I was invited to do the interview, but I asked if I could ride the track while I was there. It was no problem, Rossi's right-hand man, Albi said, and rustled up a bunch of gear for me to borrow. Our old friend Marco Belli loaned me his 450 that was on wrecked, bald tyres. I rode like a wet lettuce, uncomfortable on the tyres and the surface is very, very loose, but I'm glad I did it. I'd have been happier on my own bike, though.
Valentino, Gary, Marco
The original steel-frame Zaeta belonging to Graziano Rossi. The old man did more laps than anyone in the blazing heat and dust.
Above: Leathers hung up in the Rossi Pizzeria in Tavullia. It's a stylish place with just enough memorabilia to feel special, but not cluttered. In the courtyard is a well-stocked gift shop full of 46 paraphernalia. The Rossi Fan Club HQ.

This has put me in a better mood than I already was... G
Valentino Rossi moved ahead on yet another rain-affected day at Jerez, topping the Sunday MotoGP testing timesheets from Yamaha Factory Racing teammate Jorge Lorenzo. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow joined his fellow Yamaha riders in the top three.

Rossi buys an XR750
Valentino Rossi bought a tasty H-D XR750 to ship back to his riding ranch in Tavulia.
We asked Chris Carr, if he sold him the bike. He didn't but was hanging out with Rossi at the Indy Mile (9 GNC titles + 8 GP World Titles). He said Rossi asked him a bunch of questions aboutt mile racing. G

I love this advert for the 2012 Japanese MotoGP (spotted at the Death Spray blog). The manic manga Cal Crutchlow in the top right is my favourite. G

Dainese magazine
I did a couple of stories for Dainese's new magazine, Speed, with Sam Christmas. That's Guy Martin and Rossi on the cover, with a skier or two.
See bits of it at Dainese. It's available through some of their dealers. G

With mates like these...
Marco Belli (in white) with some of his mates hang out at the Rossi Ranch.
L-R: Mattia Pasini (Moto2 rider, 10 GP wins in 250 and 125); Albi (Rossi's mate); Marco (Italian flat track champ); Valentino Rossi; Fabrizio Vesprini (Italian speedway racer); Andrea Iannone (10 GP wins, 6 in the 2010 Moto2 season).
They might be fast, but this photo puts in doubt the universally held notion that Italian men are stylish dressers... G

One Day in Milan pt1.
2.40am: Last Thursday morning leaving home for Luton Airport.4.20am: Parked up at Luton airport. My loaner Triumph's twin brother was there. It turned out to be Mark's from the Ace Cafe.
6.40am: cheap flights are early flights.
9.20am: bus straight from the airport to EICMA, the biggest and most important (to the industry), bike show in the world.
10:20am. Everything I shot at EICMA will be on another post (at some point).
20.50: That night, Riders magazine and our friends at Officine Mermaid had organised a huge party, open to anyone who wanted to visit. The street was full of championship winning Yamaha GP bikes. Rossi's was on the counter in Mermaid.
20.55. Zaeta x Sideburn
20.57: Jeff Decker turned up.
21.01: Officine Mermaid's glass floor. Two Deus bikes parked below.
21.07: Two doors down from Mermaid, a new shop is opening selling tasty old bikes and related stuff. The idea is to turn the street into a bike street.
21.15: The party was in a two storey building on Mermaid's street, Via Genova Thaon di Revel. Italians like to smoke so the courtyard was packed, but the upstairs wasn't.
21.16 (and 21.31, 21. 52. 22.07, etc) Bacardi were handing out free bottles of Mojito and Cuba Libre all night. It didn't run out.
22:00: Mr and Mrs Belli
22:08: Riders is a very classy motorcycle/lifestyle magazine. They'd put art up on the bare walls and set up a photo booth to photograph anyone who turned up. They'll print the photos later. Carlos Checa and Giacomo Agostini both attended.
22:11: Bike crowd, no hassle.
Loads of interesting bikes. Mutant BMW.Old Hinckley triple. I think this is an ex-Carlo Talamo bike.
Mermaid Sportster Street Scrambler.

I said there were Yamaha GP bikes in shops up and down the street. Bill Ivy's machine was in the jewellery shop.
Saarinen 350 (I think) in the dry cleaners.
It's a 500 in the restaurant.
KR's OW48 was in the nail bar.
Carlos Lavado's bike was in the cookery school.
Rossi M1 in the furniture shop.
Rainey YZR500 in the children's clothes shop. 00.12: In Mermaid's workshop. Toto (in hoodie): Guido, the Italian MotoGP presenter (brown leather); Paolo Zaeta (yellow leather).
00.25: Pietro from TPR.
The morning after. A few million euros worth of Yamaha waiting to be collected.
