Buddy Custom Cycle Racing Flathead

When I was looking for photos for the FEVHOTS Post, I found photos of this gorgeous handshift flathead. I don't know if it's an original or new crate motor, but I love the mix of old and new. 1940s tech engine, in a monoshock frame. Handshift, but 2015 Maxxis rubber. Even the rider is mixing it up, white jeans and modern helmet.
It was built by Buddy Custom Cycles and if we can get a feature on it, we will. G

Harbsa?

If a BSA A10 with a Harley 45 engine in it is just what you're looking for, you're in luck, there's on on sale on UK eBay, by it now for £7495. Nothing to do with us and not entirely sure why you'd do this, but that's not to say there isn't someone out there just waiting for it.

DTRA Hooligans, Peterborough

The DTRA launched its Hooligan class at last weekend's MCN Festival, Peterborough and it was a blast. The series is sponsored by Harley-Davidson, Roland Sands Designs, Co-Built and Sideburn. The grid was healthy for race one, and a large festival crowd loved the action. Here are the runners and riders.
The rules are 750cc or bigger, multi cylinder, stock frame, no front brake.  That meant Brink's gorgeous 1940s Harley WL45 was in the mix.
All the bikes were road bikes, the scene hasn't developed to US standards were most hooligan bikes only ever see the track, so most riders removed front brake levers or calipers, leaving discs or drums fitted.
The DTRA has two fellas called Ross and each is a boss. This is Ross Sharp from the Bike Shed in London and his mean Cagiva Navigator. We have to feature this soon.
James from Hard Luck Tattoo and his Sportster.
Jaz (?) and another Sportster. Alloys taped up to stop arms going through them.
It wasn't all V-twins. DTRA regular Paul Harrison rode his 750 Bonnie.
This is the Sideburn Sportster, decked out with RSD, Speed Merchant, Motone and Biltwell parts. I'd only ridden it in a car park before the first race. The weight of the thing made me nervous, but I was happy with how it lookedand how it went. Read about it in the next Sideburn.
Co-Built Geoff, Pierre-Alexandre Treust and me ready for the first heat race. Don't know how I ended up with number 1!
The big MCN Festival crowd lapped up the action. Geoff won this heat race on a borrowed £12,000 Scrambler FT Pro, then, to be a crowd-pleaser, did a big powerslide on the slowdown lap, highsided and broke his wrist. He raced on though, and marshalled all the next day. Legend.
Paul Harrison leading, me in second, Geoff high and wide!
 Jon on his wife's Scrambler.
Milo on a Sportster and Pierre on an enormous BMW GS.
 The Harley Hooligans.
These heavyweights have so much traction off the start.
Ross was close to unbeatable. He cleared off at the front in the final leaving me, Geoff and Paul to battle for the podium places.
Brink and his 45.
 Colour-coordinated Co-Built Geoff.
I nicked third place on the last corner, when Paul and Geoff were caught up with a lapped rider. I'd done the same in a heat race, so I knew to go around the outside this time. I nearly got second on the line and had a great time, so much more fun than I thought it would be. UK hotshot, Ollie Brindley handed out the awards.

The next Hooligan race is at the Hell's Race, Belgium, then on the Friday night of Dirt Quake. G

HWZNBross

It's a long time since I called by the HWZNBRoss blog, but a few images on the @yace instagram feed reminded me to reacquaint myself. These great shots were up there (copyright: HWZNBross).

We featured the Japanese company and their heavily modified 45s in Sideburn 10. You can buy the issue as an individual or as part of a 4 magazine back issue deal. 400 pages for just £10 plus postage.

HWZNBross are heavily involved with the Chirihama Sand Flats Speedway beach drag race, that features in the brand new issue, Sideburn 23. G

A Weekend with Nick Ashley

Lily Ashley sent us a film about sheep a while back which we really loved. Here's a new one about her sister Edie, and dad Nick racing at Dirt Quake IV on a Cheney Triumph (her) and a Harley WL45 (him). BP

Dave's DTRA Photos

Dave Bevan visited Leicester Speedway for round 1 of DTRA to research the cover story he was commissioned for Sideburn 22 (out next week!). While he was there he took some photos on a film camera, developed and scanned them and sent a few to us.
Milo H and his Harley 45 vintage class bike.
Tosh giving Olivier moral support when his Harley WR tank started to leak. It was all repaired for the next race. Olivier is one stylish fella on that hand-shift Harley. This is our next cover bike.
There are three '45' Harleys racing this year, two of them are WL/UL, one is a race spec, super-rare WR. Nick Ashley, above, has had Tosh convert his WWII spec 45 into a racer. Last year he raced a Cheney Triumph. This is a different kettle of fish.
Oily Rob on the Triumph he built and debuted on the day. It looked great, he even built the frame himself. Unfortunately, Rob also has a modern 450 and he highsided it (right in front of me) and ended up breaking his ankle.
Here is Rob on the gas and air. Get well soon Rob.
The next DTRA round is Eastbourne, Sunday June 15. There are going to be a ton of great bikes there and people from all over the world are racing, if they hot foot it back from Wheels and Waves in time. G

Gary's Euro adventure

Blog regulars will have read that I was driving around Europe in a fancy Audi. Turns out, with the extras, it was worth £110,000. I did 2200 miles in three days. Well, anyway, I've given it back now. I've written the story and I've caught up on the Sidbeurn mailing. This afternoon I'm going to put a drawing of a Gateshead multi-storey car park in a frame, take more Sideburn orders to the post office and get my stuff ready for the race on Sunday. I should invoice for all the fuel that V10 drank.

On the way out to Germany I remembered there was a hot rod show, SINS in Weize, Belgium. I met up with the Flying Dutchman - who has contributed to Sideburn 2 and 3. He is one of the coolest and nicest fellas ever. He works for the Dutch air force fixing F-16s, but he's also a great photographer. He builds and rides his 60s style Panhead all over, he travels to America and shoots stories. He loves loads of different things, so he's not one of the narrow-minded types you sometime come across at hot rod shows. That's him in the middle. He liked the Audi. The Flying Dutchman blog was one of the first I really got into and it's still one of my favourites.

I also met the Jenny the Trophy Queen lady. She makes neat handbags and stuff. She used to be involved with the Ventura Outlaw Short track races. She loves Sideburn.
I bumped into Matt from Dice and his wife. I have every issue of Dice, so it was good to chat to one of the men behind it. In fact, I was surprised how many people I knew since I don't really have any hot rod connections. Simon from The Paintbox. Laurent from Powerglide magazine. Ivan from Exotica, Paris. This is his blue van. How cool?

There were only a handful of bikes, but they were the 50s-60s style I like so there weren't any bad ones. I loved the Chinese Honda Monkey bike engine in the Schwinn-style hardtail work in progress. I could do with learning how to use the Canon I bought off Ben, rather than the Olympus I got free with my Macbook though.
