Batman Bridge, Tasmania

Batman Bridge, Tamar Valley - Tasmania

Batman Bridge spans the Tamar River in the Tamar Valley which is situated in northern Tasmania.  It was built between 1966 and 1968 and was the first cable-stayed bridge in Australia.  The main span is 206 metrers long and A-frame tower 91 metres high.

Photography by Shayne Howe Smith

This unused postcard was given to me in 2018.

- - - - - - -

I was hoping the bridge got its amazing name from the Batman comics or something cool... however, it is named after John Batman, (21 January 1801 – 6 May 1839) an Australian farmer, entrepreneur and explorer.

London (Arch) Bridge in Australia for International Postcard Week

International Postcard Week
October 2-8, 2016

London Bridge Australia
Design is by Chris Carney

I have number 1 and 2 in a limited edition of 50 for this unused postcard.

The sender writes:
My husband Dick took the photo of London Bridge when we were on holiday in Australia.  Lots of people walked out to the far side.  Not for me - too much water and too high on the "bridge" and too narrow.  Shortly after we were there the 'bridge' part collapsed stranding people on the far side.  They had to be rescued by helicopter.  The noise when the rock gave way was horrendous, luckily no one was on the bridge when it went.

A receiving dish of the Australia Telescope Parkes, NSW

Photo (CSIRO)

This postcard is actually postmarked in 2017, however, the stamp on the front is postmarked from the First Day of Issue in 1992.

The Parkes Observatory (also known informally as "The Dish") is a radio telescope observatory, located 20 kilometres north of the town of Parkes, New South Wales, Australia.

The sender writes:
If it was not for the Parks Space Receiver Station your 1969 moon landing would have been different...

Here is what I found:
When Buzz Aldrin switched on the TV camera on the Lunar Module, three tracking antennas received the signals simultaneously. They were the 64-metre Goldstone antenna in California, the 26-metre antenna at Honeysuckle Creek near Canberra in Australia, and the 64-metre dish at Parkes.

In the first few minutes of the broadcast, NASA alternated between the signals being received from its two stations at Goldstone and Honeysuckle Creek, searching for the best quality picture.

A little under nine minutes into the broadcast, the TV was switched to the Parkes signal. The quality of the TV pictures from Parkes was so superior that NASA stayed with Parkes as the source of the TV for the remainder of the 2.5 hour broadcast.

I lost my list of addresses and found it only yesterday. Sorry not to have sent this from Australia
We had a fine trip but glad to be home.

Emu breeding takes place in May and June, and fighting among females for a mate is common. The male does the incubation; during this process he hardly eats or drinks and loses a significant amount of weight. The eggs hatch after around eight weeks, and the young are nurtured by their fathers.

The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)

The unusual appearance of this egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate hoax. It is one of the few venomous mammals, the male platypus has a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans.

The Aboriginal inhabitants of the Wagga Wagga region were the Wiradjuri people and the term "Wagga" in the Wiradjuri aboriginal language is thought to mean crow. To create the plural, the Wiradjuri repeat a word, thus 'Wagga Wagga' translates to 'the place of many crows'.

The township of Tallangatta was relocated 9ks west to allow the espnasion of the Hume Reservoir thus giving greater storage of water for the irrigators downstream. This was carried out in the early 1950's and made Tallangatta a unique town, being the only town in Australia to be moved in its entirity.

This postcard has a few spelling errors on it and is from 2015.

Australian Wombat

Story Card

Australian Wombat (Vombatus hirsutus)
These slow and ponderous marsupials are still plentiful in the forests of Eastern Australia.  They live on grasses and roots and have only a single pair of upper and lower incisors.  As all teeth are rootless, continuous growth prevents them from being ground away.

Wombats are speedy diggers and live in burrows some 5 metres long.. They breed in winter, the single off-spring being carried in the pouch until December.  These solitary, in-offensive animals are of gentle disposition and have been known to become affectionate pets.

Wombats are partially protected under the Wildlife Act of 1975.

unused - I bought this at an antique store in Sydney, Australia

The wombat is one of the largest burrowing animals in the world.  It has a well developed brain and is playful and quick to learn.  Its diet consists of the native grasses and vegetation of its woodland habitat.

Moon Jellies - Jellyfish

Moon Jellies - (Aurelia aurita)
Jellyfish
Australian National Maritime Museum

Named for their ghostly, translucent bells, they are abundant in temperate and tropical waters worldwide.  Their delicate bodies pulse and drift with effortless grace.  The moon jelly's short tentacles are armed with stinging cells, called "nematocysts," but the sting lacks the toxic, painful punch of other jellies.  Although they're 95 percent water, moon jellies are the main course for leatherback sea turtles and other marine creatures.  Thousands of animals die annually from mistakenly swallowing drifting plastic bags, which resemble the gelatinous jellies.

This unused postcard was bought in 2012.
