US Mail Stage Coach Circa 1915 on the Oregon Coast

US Mail Stage at High Tide on the Oregon Coast, circa 1915

The Mail must get thought, circa 1915
These brave and persistent mail carriers from the past race the surging tide to make their appointed rounds.  Up until the early 1930's the road systems along the Oregon Coast consisted of Indian trails and a few very muddy roads.  So the vast stretches of sandy beach along the Oregon Coast served as roads for all manner of transpiration north and south.

This reproduction postcard is postmarked 100 years later in 2015.

The sender writes:
We drove all over the Oregon Coast today!  I saw elk, sea lions, ate Dungeness Crab and fish.  What a day!

The Bomber (Texaco) Gas Station / Restaurant

The Bomber Gas Station (this is now The Bomber Restaurant)
Highway 99 E, Milwaukie, Oregon

unused, printed in 1997, however the picture is older than that

- - - - - - - -
From their website:
Our World War II B-17G Bomber was originally flown to Oregon by Art Lacey. From 1947 until its closing, the "Flying Fortress" you see in Milwaukie, OR. sheltered one of the nation's largest filling stations.

Currently, there are under 20 intact examples of B-17s world wide. After 64 years of weathering Oregon's climate, birds and suffering from wanton vandalism, Milwaukie's Bomber is being restored! This is a long term project that will lead to the education of generations to come about the World War II era.

The memorabilia displayed in the family restaurant are reminders of a history, not to be forgotten. The Bomber family is dedicated to the preservation of this "flying Fortress" christened the "Lacey Lady". She stands in honor of the men and woman who fought so valiantly during WWII to save our freedom.

Legend of the Myrtle Tree

Legend of the Myrtle Tree

"Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the Myrtle tree; and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off."
ISAIAH 55:13

America's most beautiful hardwood comes from the Myrtle tree. Rarest of all woods, the symmetrical, broadleaf, evergreen Myrtle grows only in south-western Oregon (Coos, Curry and Douglas counties). The coloring of the wood is unique, varying from a sedate, satiny gray to riotous, mulit-colored grains of red, yellow and brown, with many burls and shapes in its grain. It takes a century or more for the Myrtle to grow to commercial size. Green unseasoned logs will not float.

postmarked in 2010 with two 15 cent stamps, one of Frances Perkins and one Season's Greetings - both are from 1980.

If you look at the clouds, you can see they are the same picture. One is postmarked in 1988 and I bought the other in Oregon in 2010. (I didn't realize I had the other one already!) The first card (2010) is printed in the USA and names the photographer, the second (1988) is printed in Italy and there is no mention of who took the picture.

The Princess Legend of Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Princess Legend

A legend is told of a terrible sickness that threatened the Multnomah people. An old medicine man revealed that the sickness would pass if a maiden threw herself from a high cliff on the Big River to the rocks below. When the Chief's daughter saw the sickness on her lover's face, she went to the cliff and plunged to her death. Now, when the breeze blows through the water, a livery stream separates from the upper falls. The misty stream fashions a form of the maiden, a token of the Great Spirit's acceptance of her sacrifice.

The illustrious Multnomah Falls are located 30 miles east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Multnomah Falls has drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls and a lower falls. The total height of the waterfall is 620 feet (189 m). It is the tallest waterfall in the State of Oregon.

The bridge you see is the Benson Footbridge, a 45-foot (14 m)-long footbridge that allows visitors to cross above the lower cascade.

The Big Beers
of the Great Northwest

Beervana

From the brewers of the Great Northwest, a bountiful region recognized as the cradle of the craft-brewing revival, come the biggest, boldest beers in the world!

Then at the bottom of the postcard it reads:

P.S. The weather is beautiful, wish you were beer!

This postcard is an actual coaster, like the kind you find at restaurants! (I don't drink alcohol, so I would use it for a soda :)

Here is another card with more information about 'Beervana'

Beervana:
The City of Beer
Portland, Oregon

What coffee is to nearby Seattle, beer is to Portland Oregon. Portland has more breweries within its city limits than any other city in the world. And while it can't be proven - there must be an ordinance against "bad" beer - because Portland's beer is some of the best beer you'll ever drink!
