Shakespeare's Globe

The sender writes:

We had an amazing high tea in this restaurant after the Globe tour.  After that we walked to the Barbican and saw David Tennant in Richard II.  (My reply was ... You saw David Tennant!  I am so jealous!)

This postcard is postmarked in 2016 from England.

Shakespeare's Globe is the complex housing a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan playhouse in the London Borough of Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames that was originally built in 1599, destroyed by fire in 1613, rebuilt in 1614, and then demolished in 1644.

The modern Globe Theatre reconstruction is considered quite realistic, though contemporary safety requirements mean that it accommodates only 1400 spectators compared to the original theatre’s 3000.

Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia

Barter Theatre
Abingdon, Virginia

The famous Barter Theatre was the brainchild of Robert Porterfield.  Started during the Great Depression, the first patrons were admitted in exchange for food.  Many of our present-day great actors got their start here.

Barter Theatre, located in Abingdon, Virginia, opened on June 10, 1933. It is one of the longest-running professional theatres in the nation. In 1933, when the country was in the middle of the Great Depression, most patrons were not able to pay the full ticket price. Robert Porterfield, founder of the theatre, offered admission by letting the local people pay with food goods, hence the name "Barter". The original ticket price for a play was 40 cents, or the equivalent in goods.

Many well-known stars of stage, screen and television have performed early in their careers at Barter, including Gregory Peck, Ernest Borgnine, Patricia Neal, Ned Beatty, Hume Cronyn, Gary Collins, Frances Fisher, Kevin Spacey, Larry Linville, John Glover, Jim Varney, and Wayne Knight.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood California

Greetings from a World Premier at
Grauman's Chinese Theatre

The Chinese Theatre has been the scene of many gala world premieres.  Thousands of cheering fans line the streets and gather outside the theatre, to enthusiastically greet the hundreds of ilustrious stars and celebrities that attend.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre is a movie theater located in Hollywood, California.  Built over 18 months, beginning in January 1926 by a partnership headed by Sid Grauman, the theater opened May 18, 1927, with the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's film The King of Kings. It has since been home to many premieres, birthday parties, corporate junkets and three Academy Awards ceremonies.

Among the theater's most distinctive features are the nearly 200 concrete blocks set in the forecourt, which bear the signatures, footprints, and handprints of popular motion picture personalities from the 1920s to the present day.

Variations of this honored tradition are imprints of the eye glasses of Harold Lloyd, the cigars of Groucho Marx and George Burns, the magic wands of Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, the legs of Betty Grable, the fist of John Wayne, the knees of Al Jolson, the ice skating blades of Sonja Henie, and the noses of Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope.
Western stars William S. Hart and Roy Rogers left imprints of their guns. The hoofprints of "Tony", the horse of Tom Mix, "Champion", the horse of Gene Autry, and "Trigger", the horse of Roy Rogers, were left in the concrete beside the prints of the stars who rode them in the movies.

The Neo-Renaissance Slovak National Theatre, (renamed in 1920 to the Slovak National Theatre),  was built in 1885–1886 during the time of Austria-Hungary. It was opened as the City Theatre on September 22, 1886 with the opera Bánk bán of Ferenc Erkel, which is one of the most important Hungarian opera. As a sign of this event's importance Kálmán Tisza Hungarian Prime Minister and his all government  took part on this ceremony. The gala performance was conducted by Ferenc Erkel himself.

The original building was designed for 1000 spectators and was illuminated using 800 gas lamps, while the auditorium had a lustre with 64 lights. The interior was decorated, with frescos of by Pressburg native painter Kornél Spányik and by paintings by Munich artist Leo Lüttgendorf-Leinburg, among others.

The building has housed Slovak National Theatre ensembles since 1920, but today only the opera and ballet ensembles are resident. It was restored between 1969 and 1972, when a new modern technical building was added behind the old building.

Mabel Tainter Theater, Menomonie, Wisconsin

Mabel Tainter
Theater
A restored Victorian theater in downtown Menomonie, WI

Romantically reminiscent of Victorian days gone-by, the Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater is one of America's premier restored theaters. The lavish 313 seat theater features intricate hand stenciled walls and ceilings, carved mahogany, walnut and oak woodwork and Tiffany stained glass windows. Tours are offered daily, but the best way to experience the theater is by attending a show. The theater's intimacy and superb acoustics put you directly into the performance.

The Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater was constructed in 1889 as a tribute to young Mabel Tainter, a lover of music and the arts, who died in 1886 at the age of nineteen. The Memorial was commissioned by Captain and Mrs. Andrew Tainter. Andrew was one of the lumber barons for Knapp, Stout & Co.

The Theater still contains the original Steere & Turner tracker pipe organ. The organ has a total of 1597 pipes and 28 stops. The pipes range from 2 inches to 16 feet. The organ was originally water powered, but it was later converted to electric. The organ's restoration began in 1957 and since then has been fully restored.
