Australia - Tasmani, Batman Bridge, Tamar Valley
Batman Bridge, Tamar Valley - Tasmania
Batman Bridge spans the Tamar River in the Tamar Valley which is situated in northern Tasmania. It was built between 1966 and 1968 and was the first cable-stayed bridge in Australia. The main span is 206 metrers long and A-frame tower 91 metres high.
Photography by Shayne Howe Smith
This postcard was given to me in 2018.

I was hoping the bridge got its amazing name from the Batman comics or something cool... however, it is named after John Batman, (21 January 1801 – 6 May 1839) an Australian farmer, entrepreneur and explorer.

Australia - Parkes, NSW, Telescope at Parkes Observatory
Siding Spring
Coonabarabran
NSN 2357
A receiving dish of the Australia Telescope Parkes, NSW
Photo (CSIRO)
This postcard is actually postmarked in 2017, however, the stamp on the front is postmarked from the First Day of Issue in 1992.

The Parkes Observatory (also known informally as "The Dish") is a radio telescope observatory, located 20 kilometres north of the town of Parkes, New South Wales, Australia.

The sender writes:
If it was not for the Parks Space Receiver Station your 1969 moon landing would have been different...
Here is what I found:
When Buzz Aldrin switched on the TV camera on the Lunar Module, three tracking antennas received the signals simultaneously. They were the 64-metre Goldstone antenna in California, the 26-metre antenna at Honeysuckle Creek near Canberra in Australia, and the 64-metre dish at Parkes.
In the first few minutes of the broadcast, NASA alternated between the signals being received from its two stations at Goldstone and Honeysuckle Creek, searching for the best quality picture.
A little under nine minutes into the broadcast, the TV was switched to the Parkes signal. The quality of the TV pictures from Parkes was so superior that NASA stayed with Parkes as the source of the TV for the remainder of the 2.5 hour broadcast.

Australia - Victoria, London Arch Bridge
International Postcard Week
October 2-8, 2016
London Bridge Australia
Design is by Chris Carney
I have number 1 and 2 in a limited edition of 50 for this unused postcard.
The sender writes:
My husband Dick took the photo of London Bridge when we were on holiday in Australia. Lots of people walked out to the far side. Not for me - too much water and too high on the "bridge" and too narrow. Shortly after we were there the 'bridge' part collapsed stranding people on the far side. They had to be rescued by helicopter. The noise when the rock gave way was horrendous, luckily no one was on the bridge when it went.

Australia - Sydney Opera House at Dusk
Famous Sydney Opera House at Dusk
The sender writes:
We are now at our hotel in Sydney. We are going to the Opera House, then on a bus tour to see other sights. This hotel is neat. We are fully supplied with a tea pot, coffee pot, coffee, sugar and a fridge with cream, cold drinks, etc. We met a lovely couple here who are associated with The Haggai Institute in Atlanta and they've driven us all over this area. Sunday I'm giving my testimony at the church meeting. Please pray for this country.
Love mom and dad

Australia - Wagga Wagga in New South Wales
Wagga Wagga - N.S.W.
Left: St Michael's Cathedral
Middle: Chisholm Fountain, Victoria Memorial Gardens
Right: Civic Centre
Photography by Graham Whitehead

The Aboriginal inhabitants of the Wagga Wagga region were the Wiradjuri people and the term "Wagga" in the Wiradjuri aboriginal language is thought to mean crow. To create the plural, the Wiradjuri repeat a word, thus 'Wagga Wagga' translates to 'the place of many crows'.

Australia - Tallangatta, The Town that Moved 5 Miles
Greetings from Tallangatta
A Tallangatta Heritage Postcard
The township of Tallangatta was relocated 9ks west to allow the espnasion of the Hume Reservoir thus giving greater storage of water for the irrigators downstream. This was carried out in the early 1950's and made Tallangatta a unique town, being the only town in Australia to be moved in its entirity.
This postcard has a few spelling errors on it and is from 2015.

Australia - Fairbairn Dam
Emerald Central Queensland
Fairbairn Dam has a storage capacity of 1,170,000 acre feet, with a maximum reservoir area of 14,800 hectares.
Photography by Rod Murray

Fairbairn Dam is located 25 kilometres southwest of Emerald, in Central Queensland, almost on top of the Tropic of Capricorn line. Fairbairn Dam was constructed in 1972 across the Nogoa River "Gap" creating Lake Maraboon and is Queensland's second largest lake. Maraboon is the Aboriginal for "where the black ducks fly".
The primary purpose of Fairbairn Dam is for irrigation. About 300 irrigators are supplied with water for cotton, citrus and other horticulture operations.

Australia - Brisbane, River City
Brisbane Australia
Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is known as the "River City". Many of the city's delights flourish on the banks of the Brisbane River, where people can enjoy a relaxing ferry ride, a swim in the artificial lagoon at Southbank Parklands, or simply gaze upon the reflective lights of the Story Bridge from many a riverside vantage point.

Australia - Flag, Shaped
Aussie Flag
Australia's national flag incorporates the Union Jack, Southern Cross and Federation Star. The seven points of this star represent Australia's six states. The remaining point represents Australia's territories.

In 1996, the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, issued a proclamation establishing an annual Australian National Flag Day, to be held on 3 September. Flag Day celebrations had been occurring in Sydney since 1985. They were initiated to commemorate the first occasion when the Flag was flown in 1901. On Flag Day, ceremonies are held in some major centres, and the Governor-General and some politicians attend or release statements to the media. Australian National Flag Day is not a public holiday.

Australia - Money, Shaped Postcard
Australian Money

The Australian dollar (sign: $; code: AUD) is the currency of the Commonwealth of Australia, including Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Norfolk Island, as well as the independent Pacific Island states of Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu. Within Australia it is almost always abbreviated with the dollar sign ($), with A$ or AU$ sometimes used informally to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents.
