Hamburg is a beautiful place, especially for a water person like me.  This card creates a very different kind of reality.  I'm a wave.  But it has it's own kind of beauty to it.  I wish you all the best!

An Old Postcard from 1883

This is an old Postal Card from Kansas that is postmarked on June 23, 1883.
It features the Liberty 1 cent stamp.

The note on the back says:
"Sir, I hold a receipt against that note. Please state what remains due. yours, Slaten, Yates Center, Kansas, Woodson County"

I was sent this message about this card...

This "postal card" was used in 1883, but postal cards of this issue were first sold in late September of 1875. The Scott catalog number for this item is UX5 (assuming it is unwatermarked, else it is UX4 and worth hundreds of dollars!)

A postal card is one sold by the post office with the postage amount pre-printed. The double circle date stamp is all that was required for it to be entered into the mail. "Cancelling" the Liberty / One Cent is not necessary for postal cards like it is for stamped mail, but this was often done anyway as in the present example.

I have one more postal card that is postmarked in 1883...

This postal card from Maine is postmarked in 1883.  The sender is asking for  an account to date and a few blank checks.

Postcrossing Therapeutic Care, Use Signature Stamps

Information sheet issued by
Postcrossing Therapeutic Care

Avoid the
SIGNATURE HAND FRACTURE

One of the most common injuries at Postcrossing meetings is the injury to the signature hand.  Consider therefore: At meetings the signature hand is submitted to highest levels of strain!

Timely training is indispensable for risk-free signing!  Those in the know have already started.

In addition, the correct choice of auxiliary means contributes to the avoidance of early malfunction of the signature hand.

Professionals have been relying on a personalized signature stamp for a long time now.  It spares the signature hand and provides for an appealing and consistent image.

In order that the signing of thousands of postcards is no longer a risk to life and limb:
Use Signature Stamps!

This hilarious postcard is mailed in 2016 from the 7th International Postcrossing Meeting in Bielefeld, Germany.  The signatures of around 35 members is on the back of the card.

Rosie the Riveter - We Can Do It!

This is a reproduction postcard of the 'Rosie the Riveter' poster.

It is postmarked in 2014 from Germany.

- - - - - - -

Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing the American women who worked in factories during World War II, many of whom produced ammunitions and war supplies while the men were serving as soldiers in the war.

In 1942, Pittsburgh artist J. Howard Miller was hired by the Westinghouse Company's War Production Coordinating Committee to create a series of posters for the war effort. One of these posters became the famous "We Can Do It!" image that you see above.

The Institute of American Deltiology was privately incorporated December 28, 1993 as a research center, library and gallery for the study, display and use of picture postcards as documents of American history, art, and culture.  Donald R. Brown, founder, is shown standing outside the Institute in 2003, sixty years after starting to collect on August 20, 1943.  A library of books, journals, club bulletins, news clippings and slides supports the Institute's postcard collections.  The IAD is located in a modified classical revival structure in the vernacular built in 1848-49 by Thomas Bassler, an entrepreneur along Pennsylvania's Union Canal.

Cuba and The USA Opening Up Relations, International Postcard Week

International Postcard Week
October 4-10, 2015

Hello and Happy International Postcard Week 2015!

This postcard celebrates the re-establishing of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba.  For the first time since 1961, embassies have been established in each other's capital.

My husband and I had the great pleasure of visiting Cuba during these historic times.  The people there are beautiful on the outside and the inside.  In old Havana many of the buildings are being refurbished or rebuilt, and it looks amazing!

The picture on the front of this postcard was done by the renowned artist Rick Geary and symbolizes the renewed bridge between these two countries which are only 90 miles apart.
Happy Collecting,
Brenda

Jarash, Jerash, The city of 1000 columns in Jordan

Jarash

This postcard is postmarked in 2015 with three stamps from Jordan.

- - - - - - - -

Jerash is the capital and largest city of Jerash Governorate which is situated in the north of Jordan

A strong earthquake in 749 AD destroyed large parts of Jerash, while subsequent earthquakes along with the wars and turmoil contributed to additional destruction. Its destruction and ruins remained buried in the soil for hundreds of years until they were discovered by German Orientalist Ulrich Jasper Seetzen in 1806.  Now there is a population of around 42,000 people in the city.

Jarash has two nicknames: 'Pompeii of the East' and 'The city of 1000 columns'.

Postcrossing Meet-up Postcard from Koln, (Cologne) Germany

Koln
14 - 3 - 2015
Postcrossing Meeting
Cologne

This postcard is signed by many  people from the meet-up.  The sender (Isa) knows I am not a fan of stickers on postcards.  They turn the paper brown over time and ruin the cards.  So she put a pull tab sticky note on the back saying "Bitte Keine Sticker"  (Please, no stickers).  The only thing is, she forgot to remove it before she sent it.  It made it all the way to the states with the sticky still on it!

Isa saw a scan of the back and said that the sticky note actually was long and covered up the address.  So someone in the post office must have cut the bottom off but put the words part of the sticky back on the card.  How wonderful that they did not just throw the whole note away!
