Meramec Caverns - Cave Interior

PDK Postcard # 8 - 2017
by Pete Klinger
Almost National Postcard Week

Yet another colorful photo from the collection.  This one I took in 2011.  Ever drive past St. Louis on I-44 "Meramec Caverns" signs start before the bypass, many miles before Route 66.  Then more and more, until you approach Stanton, Missouri.  Let me say, it's worth the stop to relax, ice cream shop, nice cool walk, somewhat hokey, but informative tour but if you've never done it, make the stop!  Beautiful formations, well maintained property, excellent lighting effects.  Step back in time to the days when many roadside attractions like this were along the National highways.

This postcard is postmarked in 2017.

A room within the cavern was used for Hollywood productions, most notably The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1973). In the particular movie, the site was used as the cave system where Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn find the hidden gold.

An episode of Lassie was also filmed in this part of the cave.

Colossal Cave in Tucson, Arizona

Colossal Cave
Tucson, Arizona

Colossal Cave is located in the Escabrosa Limestone of Mississippian origin 300 million years old.  The limestone was formed in a great inland sea of that period from the calcium deposits laid down by the remains of a sea creature called the crinoid, a small plant-like sea animal.  The mountains in which Colossal Cave is formed were a mid-tertiary development caused by a crustal upheaval of the earth approximately 40 million years ago.  The cave system was carved out of the solid limestone by the action of seeping water that eventually formed an underground river with many intricate tributaries.  The full extent of the Cave is not yet known but explorations have reached a length of 39 miles.  The many weird and beautiful crystal formations that cover the interior of the cave were formed over a period of thens of thousands of years.  The number of different crystal formations are astronomical and their sizes vary from the minute to the colossal.

This was written several years ago, so I wanted to find out how long they found out the cave was.

On the official park website it reads:
Colossal Cave has never been fully explored. Although there are an estimated 39 miles of cave tunnels.
- - -
So it looks like they never found more tunnels since back in the 1970's.

Predjamski Grad, Predjama Castle in Slovenia

Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle built within a cave mouth in the village of Predjam, Slovenia.

The legend of Erazem of Predjama

The castle became known as the seat of Knight Erazem Lueger (or Luegger), owner of the castle in the 15th century and a renowned robber baron. He was the son of the Imperial Governor of Trieste, Nikolaj Lueger. According to legend, Erazem came into conflict with the Habsburg establishment, when he killed the commander of the Imperial army Marshall Pappencheim, who had offended the honour of Erazem's deceased friend, Andrej Baumkircher of Vipava. Fleeing from the revenge of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, Erazem settled in the family fortress of Predjama. He allied himself with the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus and began to attack Habsburg estates and towns in Carniola. Thus enraged, the Austrian leader commissioned the governor of Trieste, Andrej Ravbar, to capture and kill Erazem. This is when the impregnability of Predjama Castle was tested.

For a year and a day, Erazem was besieged in his fortress. But to the dismay of his adversaries, he continued to survive and taunt the attacking soldiers by pelting them with cherries. They could not understand how he was obtaining supplies. As far as they knew, there was only one way in and out of both the valley and castle; but the Erazem knew better. Unbeknownst to the soldiers, Erazem knew of a secret tunnel leading from the castle, which allowed him to travel to the nearby village of Vipava and collect supplies, including hoards of fresh cherries when in season.

But it seemed that the soldiers were to have the last laugh. With the strategic placement of a small signal flag, a servant of Erazem was bribed to reveal when his master was in attendance at that place where the elusive knight and even the noblest of men needed to go after consuming lots of cherries and wine: the outhouse. Unfortunately for Erazem, the toilet, situated on the top floor and at the very edge of the castle, was the one place that was not impregnable. When the moment came, the flag was placed there by the treacherous servant. A single cannonball was launched, and Erazem was literally caught with his trousers down.

Camuy River Cave Park in Puerto Rico

Parque de las Cavernas del Rio Camuy, Puerto Rico

Rio Camuy Cave Park, Puerto Rico

unused, from 2009

- - - - - - -

The Camuy River Cave Park is a cave system in Puerto Rico. The caverns are part of a large network of natural limestone caves and underground waterways carved out by the third-largest underground river in the world, the RĂo Camuy (Camuy River). The cave system was discovered in 1958 but there is archaeological evidence that these caves were explored hundreds of years ago by the TaĂno Indians, Puerto Rico's first inhabitants.

Over 10 miles of caverns, 220 caves and 17 entrances to the Camuy cave system have been mapped so far. This, however, is only a fraction of the entire system which many experts believe still holds another 800 caves. Only a small part of the complex is open to the public.

Tonto National Monument in Arizona

Tonto National Monument

The Tonto Cliff Ruins were inhabited as late as the 14th century by early farmers known as the Salado Indians.  Salado is a Spanish world which means "salty."  These indians were named Salado because of their proximity to the "Rio Salado." The Tonto Monument, located near Roosevelt Dam, was established in 1907 and covers 1,120 acres.

Archaeologists believe that the Salado Indians moved into the area around 900 A.D.  The Salado Indians grew corn, pumpkin, squash, beans, cotton, and their crop fields were located about four miles away from the dwelings themselves. Like the Anasayi, Sinagua, Hohokam, and Mogollon peoples, the tattered remnants of the Slado were forced to move from their homes by the new arrival of stronger marauding tribes or that simply a prolonged cycle of drought made it necessary for them to find new water sources.

At "The Baths", the beach shows evidence of the island's volcanic origins, which deposited granite that eroded into piles of boulders on the beach. The boulders form natural tidal pools, tunnels, arches and scenic grottoes that are open to the sea.  The largest boulders are about 40 feet (12 m) long.

We have been here with a tour and the guides said many model shoots for magazines are done there because it is so beautiful.  I believe it!  It is an amazing place.

Booth's Amphitheatre in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

Saltpetre Vats and Booth's Amphitheatre in Mammoth Cave

During the War of 1812, saltpetre was mined in Mammoth cave and converted into gunpowder.  It was also at this point that Edwin Booth recited to a group of cave visitors in 1872.

St. Herman's Cave, Belize

Belize
St. Herman's Cave, Hummingbird Highway

unused, from 2011

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

St. Herman's Cave is of great archaeological interest. It was used by the Maya during the Classic Period. Pottery vessels were found, which were used for the collection of Zuh uy Ha (virgin water) from driping speleothems (cave formations). Other interesting finds included spears and torches.

Normally a permit is required for all archaeological caves in Belize. This cave is an exception, as it is open to all park visitors without permit.

You can walk on a concrete path with steps for more than 1.6 km underground, but it can be slippery when wet.

Two miles from St Herman's Cave is the Blue Hole, an azure blue swimming hole fringed with vines and ferns. It is fed by a stream which comes from St Herman's Cave. (Maybe the reflection of the water is why this cave looks blue-green in this postcard.  It looks almost like it is underwater!)

Cathedral Caverns State Park is located within Woodville, Alabama city limits. The cave was first developed as an attraction by Jay Gurley in the late 1950s. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in June 1972.

Mr. Gurley maintained the cave as a tourist attraction from 1959 to 1974. The cave was sold in 1975 at an auction. The State of Alabama bought the cave in 1987 with the intent to reopen the site as a state park. After funding delays, restoration work actually began in 1995. In May 2000, the Cavern re-opened to the public.

In 1995, Cathedral Caverns provided the cave settings for the Disney Studios film Tom and Huck especially where the vicious Injun Joe (Eric Schweig) falls into an enormous chasm.

Cathedral Caverns holds six world records:

(1) Cathedral Caverns has the widest entrance of any commercial cave in the world. It is 25 feet tall and 128 feet wide.

(2) Cathedral Caverns is home to "Goliath"--the largest stalagmite in the world. It measures 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumstance.

(3) Cathedral Caverns has the largest flow stone wall, which is 32 feet tall and 135 feet long.

(4) Cathedral Caverns is known for the largest "frozen" waterfall.

(5) Cathedral Caverns has the largest stalagmite forest of any cave in the world.

(6) Cathedral Caverns has the most improbably formation in the world which is a stalagmite that is 35 feet tall and 3 inches wide!
