Bronze ancien

This research focuses on prehistoric metallurgy and the key role it played for the human communities of the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula (the present-day area of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia and the Principality of Andorra). The study covers the period from the first use of gold and copper during the Late Neolithic to the structured production of the Bronze Age. The role played by metallurgy in each prehistoric community and its relationship with the other elements involved in social life is explained. Questions such as the origin of this technology, its social value in relation to the other productions or the importance traditionally given to it in the development and consolidation of social asymmetries are dealt with in depth in the context of each archaeological group.

Le " Campaniforme", par la variabilité de ses manifestations dans le temps et dans l'espace, semble recouvrir plusieurs entités différentes qui ne peuvent être appréhendées de façon globale. L'approche régionale, dans le Sud-Est de la France, permet de mettre en évidence la nature d'un premier "Phénomène Campaniforme" qui se diffuse dans les sociétés du Néolithique final. Ce phéno¬mène, relativement marginal, produit rapidement une véritable "Culture Campaniforme", autonome et divisée en faciès géographiques dont les relations avec les cultures locales qui perdurent sont probables. Cette culture se poursuit au début de l'âge du Bronze ancien sous la forme d'une tradition qui intègre de nouveaux éléments d'origine étrangère. Le rôle de ce Phénomène Campaniforme et de la culture qui en est issue est replacé dans une perspective de l'évolution des sociétés du IIIe millénaire.

La fouille de sauvetage urgent du site de "Cassagna 2" menée par l'Afan en automne 2001 a été motivée par l'aménagement de la ZAC "Aéroconstellation" dans la banlieue toulousaine. Le site archéologique a été reconnu à travers la présence de petites structures fossoyées de type "trou de poteau" réparties sur une surface de près de 3500 m² au nord-est de l'emprise décapée (env. 1 ha), aisni que par celle de deux nappes de mobilier. La première, qui était conservée sur une surface d'environ 1400m² à l'ouest de l'emprise (secteur 1), a livré des éléments se rapportant au Bronze final. La seconde, qui nous intéresse, était localisée au sud-est de l'emprise sur une surface d'environ 340 m² (secteur 2).
Il s'agissait d'un sol relativement bien conservé. En effet, l'état des surfaces et des tranches de la céramique était satisdaisant pour ce type de contexte et les grands tessons, souvent jointifs, n'avaient pas beaucoup migré. Cette surface était conforme à ce que l'on peut attendre d'un habitat stable : un sol dense en débris, issus d'une vaisselle abondante et variée. On y distingue deux grandes concentrations. La première était clairement limitée au sein d'un quadrilatère d'environ 16 m². La seconde, plus grande, paraissait également s'inscrire dans un quadrilatère.
Pour cette occupation, il nous semble possible de proposer une attribution à un stade régional de l'évolution du complexe campanoforme, ceci malgré l'absence d'éléments décorés et grâce à une série homogène de vaisselle associant types principaux de la céramique commune et formes hybrides, à l'exclusion de tout élément vérazien.

C’est la découverte de deux sépultures du Bronze ancien au sud de Toulouse (Canségala, Le Vernet, Haute-Garonne) qui est à l’origine de cet article. Depuis la fouille (2005), quelques collègues nous ont transmis d’autres découvertes qu’il a semblé utile d’intégrer et de remettre en contexte. En effet, les sépultures individuelles de cette période restent très rares en Languedoc et les sépultures en jarres étaient inconnues jusqu’ici.
La première sépulture de Canségala a été réalisée pour un adulte, probablement une femme. La sépulture en jarre, qui concerne un nourrisson, était implantée à une distance d’environ 8 m. Il avait été inséré par le siège, au sein d’un contenant dont la facture ne diffère pas de celle des productions domestiques. Quelques éléments de nature détritique (tessons, faune) issus d’une structure proche permettent de préciser le contexte de leur implantation.
Leur découverte documente en effet une probable association funéraire au sein d’une aire domestique. Quant à la sépulture en jarre, elle permet l’évocation de plusieurs influences. Les seules comparaisons proches concernent des sites du Massif central (Auvergne) (Loison, 2003). Ces vases-sépultures de nourrissons peuvent être intégrés soit dans des aires domestiques soit dans des aires funéraires. Concernant les sépultures individuelles, elles demeurent rares dans le Sud de la France. En effet, la tradition chalcolithique des sépultures plurielles en coffres lithiques ou cavités y demeure vivace jusqu’au Bronze moyen. Les quelques sépultures individuelles (en silos ou en fosses spécifiques) ne semblent pas intégrées dans des cimetières, mais épouser un maillage diffus, peut-être lié à des cellules d’habitations, comme cela est attesté en Auvergne. Concernant la chronologie, les sépultures en fosses domestiques paraissent, pour l’instant, plutôt liées à la phase émergente du Bronze ancien, mais on connaît également à cette période des fosses spécifiques, clairement architecturées dans la vallée du Rhône. Les rares vases-sépultures recensés paraissent par contre tous se rapporter à un Bronze ancien plutôt évolué. Cette attribution semble être la même à plus large échelle, sur des sites où cette pratique est bien connue, comme pour le prestigieux gisement d’El Argar (phase 2, 1900 à 1600 cal. BC), (Siret et Siret, 1887 ; Cauwe dir., 2003), dans le Sud-Est de l’Espagne ou pour les sites sous abri de la vallée de l’Adige, dans les Alpes italiennes (Perini, 1971 et 1975 ; Nicolis, 1996 et 2004). Un des documents intégrés dans l’article, qui concerne un dépôt funéraire sous abri dans les Préalpes provençales (Les Baguarettes à Ménerbes, Vaucluse), permet de proposer une convergence avec les ensembles italiens, qui sont peut-être chronologiquement les plus précoces parmi les comparaisons proposées. Ceci ne suffit pas pour proposer une origine alpine du phénomène, ce domaine ne pouvant constituer qu’un relais régional par rapport à des influences encore plus éloignées. Ce qui complique la recherche d’une éventuelle genèse est que des sépultures de jeunes enfants en jarres sont également connues localement à la fin du Néolithique… Mais une origine locale n’est pas non plus convaincante, car un important hiatus documentaire demeure pour le Campaniforme et le Bronze ancien I. À cette étape, nous pouvons juste constater que l’utilisation d’un vase comme « matrice » d’inhumation pour les jeunes enfants a pu être sporadique à la fin du Néolithique avant d’être réellement ritualisée à travers de nouvelles influences lors du développement du plein Bronze ancien.


The origin of this article lies in the discovery of two Early Bronze Age graves to the south of Toulouse (Canségala, Le Vernet, Haute-Garonne). Since the excavation (2005), some colleagues have informed us of other discoveries, which it seemed interesting to integrate and set in context. Individual graves of this period remain very rare in Languedoc and burials in jars were previously unknown. The first grave at Canségala was that of an adult, probably a woman. The burial in a jar, which concerns an infant, was placed at a distance of about 8 metres. The infant had been inserted buttocks first into a container that is no different from the domestic productions. Some elements of litter (potsherds, animal bones) from a nearby structure allow the context of their implantation to be defined. Their discovery provides material concerning a possible funerary association within a domestic area. The burial in a jar allows various influences to be evoked.The only close comparisons concern some sites in the Massif Central (Auvergne) (Loison, 2003). Such infant burials in jars can be integrated in either domestic or funerary areas.
As for individual graves, they remain very rare in the South of France. The Chalcolithic tradition of multiple burials in stone cists or cavities was present until the Middle Bronze Age. The few individual graves (in silos or specific pits) do not seem to be integrated in cemeteries, but seem to be vaguely organized, maybe connected to dwelling cells, as attested in Auvergne. Concerning the chronology, graves in domestic pits seem, for the moment, to be related to the emergent phase of the Early Bronze Age, but clearly “architectured” specific pits are also known for this period in the Rhone valley. The few known burials in jars all seem connected to a more advanced phase of the Early Bronze Age. This attribution seems to be the same on a wider scale on sites where this practice is well known, such as the prestigious site of El Argar (phase 2, 1900 to 1600 cal. BC), (Siret and Siret, 1887; Cauwe dir., 2003) in south-eastern Spain or for the rockshelter sites of the Adige valley, in the Italian Alps (Perini, 1971 and 1975; Nicolis, 1996 and 2004). One of the documents integrated in the article which concerns a funerary rockshelter site in the Provence Prealps (Les Baguarettes, Ménerbes, Vaucluse) allows a convergence to be proposed with the Italian series, which may chronologically be the earliest among the proposed comparisons. This is not sufficient to propose an Alpine origin for the phenomenon, as that domain could merely constitute a regional relay for influences from much farther afield.
What complicates the search for a possible genesis is the fact that burials of young children in jars are also known locally at the end of the Neolithic…
However a local origin is not convincing either, because there still remains an important documentary hiatus for the Bell-Beaker culture and the Early Bronze Age. At this stage, we can merely observe that the use of a jar as a “burial container” for young children could have been sporadic at the end of the Neolithic before being truly ritualized through new influences during the development of the full Early Bronze Age.

En janvier 2006, lors de fouilles préventives réalisées par l’INRAP à la périphérie de la ville de Nîmes, un fossé du Néolithique final a été mis au jour sur le site du parc Georges Besse II. Sur une portion de sa longueur, le niveau supérieur de remplissage a livré un abondant mobilier céramique, lithique et osseux. L’ensemble des études de ces éléments mobiliers présenté ici permet de confirmer l’homogénéité de ce niveau qui peut donc être attribué à la phase de transition Néolithique final/Bronze ancien. Les résultats obtenus, qui témoignent de nombreuses données inédites pour le Languedoc et le Midi méditerranéen, attestent un double phénomène d’évolution sur place des populations du début du Bronze ancien encore très marquées par les traditions techniques du Campaniforme d’une part, mais aussi sous influences extérieures d’autre part. La région nîmoise, le Gard et le Midi méditerranéen dans son ensemble présentent de nombreuses informations qui permettent de réaliser une comparaison à l’échelle interrégionale. Ces comparaisons entre les sites et les données matérielles permettent de mettre en évidence tout à la fois une rupture et une continuité pour cette période couvrant la fin du Néolithique et le début de l’Âge du bronze.

Excavations in the Late Copper Age - Early Bronze Age settlement of Tenuta Quadraro - via Lucrezia Romana, Rome (final 3rd millennium BC). Chronology and cultural comparisons with contemporary contexts in Italy, especially with late Beaker and Ortucchio complexes, are discussed.

L’habitat fortifié (castellu a torra) de Filitosa-Turrichju est situé dans la basse vallée du Taravu, au sud-ouest de la Corse, à proximité des grands gisements d’I Calanchi-Sapar’Alta, Basì, Campu Stefanu et Castellucciu-Calzola. Connu essentiellement pour ses statues-menhirs armées et ses trois monuments turriformes, le site est fouillé à partir des années 1950 par R. Grosjean et E. Atzeni, puis par J. Liégeois, chercheurs dont les travaux sont à l’origine de développements théoriques qui ont longtemps marqué l’archéologie insulaire. L’objet de cette contribution est d’exposer le résultat du réexamen récent de la documentation céramique des niveaux attribués à l’âge du Bronze, mené dans le cadre d’une thèse de doctorat, ainsi que présenter un catalogue des formes de la vaisselle. Malgré une constitution lacunaire, la collection étudiée témoigne particulièrement bien des relations culturelles entretenues par les groupes corses du Bronze ancien et moyen avec leurs contemporains d’Italie et de Sardaigne, voire du sud de la France, selon des processus qui restent à déterminer. Les productions du site sont aisément intégrables dans le corpus morphologique global de la Corse et permettent bien souvent d’en affiner la chronologie. On se propose, pour conclure, de poser les bases d’une réflexion quant à certains aspects culturels et évolutifs liés à la structuration du site.

Fin 2013, un diagnostic a été mené à Ghisonaccia, sur la côte orientale de la Corse, sur l’emprise d’un projet industriel thermodynamique. L’opération a porté sur une surface d’une quinzaine d’hectares appartenant au domaine agricole de Pinia, un vaste espace plan situé entre le Fium’Orbu et l’étang d’Urbinu. Sur une zone de près de 1000 m², trois fosses ont été individualisées. Deux d’entre elles sont mal conservées. La troisième, FS1004, a été identifié grâce à son remplissage de galets. La taille de la fosse peut être estimée à 125 cm de large pour 175 cm de long. Le creusement, de 50 cm de profondeur, a un profil complexe. Le remplissage a livré du mobilier céramique et du torchis. Un prélèvement de sédiments a été réalisé dans la couche inférieure en raison de la présence de nombreux fragments de charbons de bois et a fait l’objet d’une datation, permettant d’attribuer ce remplissage au Bronze ancien 2 (3410 +/- 30 BP), en parfaite cohérence avec le mobilier associé. Ces résultats préliminaires constituent à ce jour les seuls éléments fiables de présence humaine autour des grands étangs de la plaine orientale à cette époque et offrent un contexte à la découverte ancienne d’un ensemble de trois haches en bronze (au lieu-dit Mignataghja, à 5 km au sud-ouest) appartenant à des morphotypes toscans. L’objectif de ce poster est de contribuer à renouveler l’état des connaissances sur les phases anciennes de l’âge du Bronze insulaire par une mise en contexte de ces données nouvelles.

This article describes newly discovered Neolithic engravings at two sites in Milly-la-Forêt, France. The first part seeks to prove that a cruciform motif on the west side of the Menhir du Paly is the most anthropomorphic example of the kind of motifs seen on Neolithic monuments at St. Samson-sur-Rance, Marly-le-Roi, the allée couverte de Prajou-Menhir at Trébeurden, and the Cave aux Fées at Brueil-en-Vexin, rather than an attempt to Christianize the monument with a cross (as has been suggested elsewhere). The motif consists of a cross with arched eyebrows above a pair of discoidal eyes at the summit, two branches below, which end in fingers (that I only observed while this article was in press, hence a second article, entitled “Observations et hypothèses sur le site du Paly : Milly-la-Forêt, Essonne”, which appeared in January 2013), and a rectangular base filled with a careful arrangement of pecked discs.

The paper goes on to describe a pecked frieze in a nearby cave called Butte de Châtillon 5. The panel includes four axes whose shafts hook towards the back of their blades. The pair of axes at the center of the top row are astonishing both because they are the only ones that have ever been found upside-down, and because the handle of the central one is surmounted by the kind of U-shaped motif, which is usually read as horns or a necklace.

This paper is the second of two about engravings on the menhir du Paly, which is also known as la Pierre Droite and la Pierre du Paly, and an adjacent quartzite slab. The previous article, which is entitled “Réexamen de Deux Sites à Gravures Piquetées. Milly-la-Forêt (Essonne)” (Art Rupestre, Bulletin du GERSAR No 62, June 2012: pp. 33-38) focused on proving that a cruciform motif on the west side of the menhir (as opposed to the east side, where we found a plumed face) was the most anthropomorphic example of the kind of motifs seen on Neolithic monuments at St. Samson-sur-Rance, Marly-le-Roi, the allée couverte de Prajou-Menhir at Trébeurden, and the Cave aux Fées at Brueil-en-Vexin, rather than an attempt to Christianize the monument with a cross (as has been suggested elsewhere). The motif consists of a cross with arched eyebrows above a pair of discoidal eyes at the summit, two branches below, which end in fingers (that we only observed while the first article was in press, hence the second article), and a rectangular base filled with a careful arrangement of pecked discs. Five of these discs form a shallow arch across the top of the compartment, creating a possible belt or waist, while a circle of nine discs around a central dot may form the figure’s belly and navel.
If the circle of white discs is a belly, then its roundness could symbolize pregnancy. It is interesting to note that the period between a woman’s last period and her giving birth, at the end of a full-term pregnancy, is exactly nine lunar months (265-266 days). This suggests that the circle of 9 discs, which look like full moons, may be one of the oldest known calendars.
This theme of reflective discs seems to be picked up again on the horizontal slab adjacent to the menhir, where two basins have been polished in such a way as to make the puddle that forms in the larger one circular and in the smaller one oval to circular, depending on the water’s depth. This makes the surfaces of the two puddles mirror the sky in a way which makes them resemble the discs that one finds overhead - the sun and moon. Both of these modified basins also contain radial cracks and grooves, which are oriented towards three cardinal points in one case and four in the other. 
Another interesting possibility is that the lines from the top corners of the compartment under the cruciform “idol” to the edges of the menhir may represent a ground or horizon line. If the line represents such a division, then it may represent separations between both the upper body and its lower generative portion, and between the apparent and buried parts of the site, which probably contains a rectangular burial chamber in addition to the menhir. If this interpretation is correct, the entire complex should be read anthropomorphically and represents two aspects of a female supernatural - one above ground and aligned with the cardinal points, two of which are associated with the sun’s passage through the sky, and the other below ground, and associated with death and regeneration.

The funerary evidence from Brandýs does not differ from the usual standard of Bohemian Bell Beaker cemeteries. Extraordinary is, however, the extent of the post depositional damage by the water erosion. Thanks to the appropriate recording methods of 3D recording and photogrammetry it was possible to reconstruct the original funerary contexts disintegrated over considerable space and also to interpret the erosion and accumulation processes that have taken place on the site.
As the burial rites are considered the two graves contained burials of adult women (grave 1 and 2) with their heads orientated to the south. In the case of the grave 1 it is obvious that the body was positioned onto the right side, which is indicative of female gender. Also the funerary assemblages of these two graves suggest they were containing female burials: torso of an ovoid pot in the grave 1 and six bone V-perforated buttons in the grave 2. The third funerary context was badly damaged burial of a juvenile individual interpreted as grave 3 is represented by prestigious funerary assemblage – fragments of at least two decorated bell beakers and tiny fragment of an amber bead (?). It is difficult to make any conclusion concerning the Bell Beaker chronology. The occurrence of the metope motives may suggest that the beakers were of the localised eastern province style but the chronological significance of this motive is not clear. The three graves of 2011 excavation are probably part of earlier known funerary site discovered in the neighbouring brick factory already in 1905.

The 1998 excavation on the Prague motorway ring produced evidence of two inhumation burials of the Bell Beaker Period. The isolated graves were found together with a Řivnáč Period semi-sunken hut and numerous late Bronze Age Knovíz settlement features. As the funerary assemblages consist only of accompanying pottery (Begleitkeramik), including the miniaturized variant of the Nagyrév type jug, it is possible to date both contexts into later Bell Beaker period. The miniature version of a jug in the context of child burial is not surprising in Bohemia (cf. Turek 2008b). The isolation of both graves, similar composition and location of grave goods induce the assumptions on the relationship between the two female burials. Were they relatives? If yes, was the adult woman (18–25 years of age) mother of the girl (7–8 years of age) or were they sisters? The DNA analysis may help to solve this question in future.

The Phenomenon that is in Central Europe called the Bell Beaker Culture falls into the category that Evžen Neustupný calls strict and fundamental culture (Neustupný 2011, 177). Especially the arbitrary symbolic and expressive rapidly change with the rise of strict cultures. The change affects the forms of artefacts, burial rites, settlement pattern and perhaps also some aspects of social relations and cosmology. However, the rise of the Bell Beaker Phenomenon did not bring a sharp discontinuity with the previous cultural development. Just the opposite, in some respect one may observe a distinctive continuity with the preceding Corded Ware Culture. Especially these strict cultures were characteristic by their rapid rise and at the beginning also by very uniform representation spreading over large territories. It is, however, likely that the symbolic meaning of the Beaker package was regionally modified in various local contexts and in the periphery regions and beyond their horizon, within the neighbouring cultural zones only some elements of artefactual and/or ritual contents were adopted sometimes without their original symbolic meaning. It is important to bear in mind that the cultural and symbolic meaning of the culturally specific artefacts (‘Beaker package’) probably spread over large territories of Europe thanks to some kind of ideology/religion but in some periphery regions the artefacts might have gain a new social and symbolic meaning. The motivation to adopt some cultural elements could have been connected to the prestige of exotica instead of to their original symbolic meaning. The sprej of Bell Beaker material culture into peripheries or neighbouring regions did not necessarily mean the expansion of the original Beaker ideology. In some regions of western and northern Europe was the spread of Bell Beaker phenomenon connected to the introduction of the early copper technology. The existence of a virtual border between the Chalcolithic communities with the technological know-how of the copper production and the West Europeans is presumed to be somewhere in the Lower Rhine region (Brodie 1997, 307–311, ‘Chalcolithic frontier’). The technological knowledge of copper metallurgy and use of metal artefacts played mainly prestigious social role that formed social status of individuals, as well as, whole communities.
The more recent studies also suggest that certain uniformity in the Bell Beaker Phenomenon may be result of Sharp social and symbolic cultural identity by distant communities in various parts of Europe, rather than evidence of long distance exchange of artefacts (Rehman – Robinson – Shennan 1992). The analysis of central European Bell Beaker pottery suggested the local domestic production of both main pottery traditions – decorated beakers and accompanying pottery, with possibility of limited local short distance exchange. The spread of technology and ceramic style might have been part of marital relations between more or less distant territories. Such communication between prehistoric communities was perhaps motivated by the endeavour to reach the access to the strategic technologies and materials (Brodie 1997). Such contacts were sometimes established over very long distances, especially in those cases where there was some important source of communication was available, such as the Danube River in the case of connection between northern Hungary and Serbia or in the case of Rhône River connecting Burgundy and Côte d’Azur. It is, however, more than obvious that the Copper Age population of Europe had a limited mobility but at the same time very good notion of variety of religions and forms of material culture in very remote regions.

La présente contribution vise à préciser les aspects géographiques et chronologiques liés à l’apparition, au développement et au déclin d’un type de construction en pierre sèche localement appelée « torre ». Ces édifices monumentaux, qui présentent une forme de tour tronconique, sont élevés selon un cahier des charges architectural précis, et trouvent leur strict équivalent en Sardaigne avec les milliers de nuraghi monotorre du Bronze ancien et moyen. La publication du détail du maigre corpus des torre de Corse, ainsi que la révision des données chronologiques fournies par les fouilles et les prospections opérées ces cinquante dernières années, seront également l’occasion de souligner l’importance prise par ces monuments dans l’évolution de la construction du discours archéologique depuis les années 1960 et les travaux de Roger Grosjean.

"The author offers a new descriptive explanation of the Beaker phenomenon, by focusing on Mediterranean France and making reference to the Greek influx in the same area 2000 years later. In the Iron Age, the influence began with an exploratory phase, and then went on to create new settlements and colonise new areas away from the coast. The Beaker analogy is striking, with phases of exploration and implantation and acculturation, but
adjusted to include a final phase where Beaker practice was more independent. Comparing the numerous models put forward to explain it, the author shows that immigration and a cultural package are both aspects of the Beaker phenomenon.
