Boarding action walls

Another short post today, catching up with the previews that were shown off several weeks ago now! A lot has happened In these last few weeks it's been difficult to keep.uo.with everything that's been going on. Anyway, this is one of the things I have been most hyped about out of the previews we saw. I have always wanted a Zone Mortalis type of setting and have spent many hours trawling eBay, shapeways and other sites looking for affordable walls to make a board with and now GW have released there own version.

It's not the cheapest around, it's GW, it never was going to be but its definitely not the most expensive or the worst looking set I've come across. That I also like is the fact that it contains the boards as well, even if they are slightly weird sizes. I don't know what it is with GW and their board sizes but why they just can't stick to one set of sizes and be done with it I don't know.

I would.love to be able to get two sets of this but I think I can only justify buying a single set, maybe I can pick up some of the kill team stuff going cheap at some point but I doubt it. Even 500 point battles will be good fun I think and be a real change from the normal missions. I don't think I will bother with the book that's supposed to accompany the terrain, I'll either just pinch the rules from somewhere else or just make up the bits I need to to get it to work. Either way I'm excited about getting this set and getting some games it.

A few bits of scatter terrain

These are, I believe, the last few bits of terrain that I have that have not been painted. The barrels were 3d printed and came along with the wrecked Rhino that I painted up a while back and the other bits came with all the pipe work in the Mantic Terrain Crate I brought ages ago. The only reason they didn't get painted up with the rest is because I lost them somewhere in my stuff and only found them recently. I'm sure that there are still several of the boxes from the GW containers pack floating around somewhere that need Painting but I have no idea where they are.

All the bits that needed painting

Two small generator things and a terminal for the small pipework.

Basic barrels, with equally basic paint scheme.

Quick but effective

These pieces are the last of my terrain that needs painting that I am aware of, like I said above, I'm sure there are other little bits around but don't know where. Its good to finally have all the terrain painted and ready for the tabletop.

Finished terrain

So my plans for getting the kids to paint up my terrain for me sort of worked, they did Paint up some of them but I had to finish them off. Well I say had to, I didn't have to, I just wanted to actually get them finished in a reasonable amount of time.

The barricades,

These are painted very simply, as is most of the parts I painted. Dry brush boltgun metal (or lead belcher as it's called these days) over black primer, with some red highlights, mostly the Ork plane parts.

Planes and lightbulbs. Thought about OSL, then decided I'm not that skilled \ bothered

Rubble piles, with a couple of extra colours for details

Nice, simple but effective.

The platforms and rubble pile.

The platforms are a bit useless in my view but easy enough to build and paint. The rubble pile.was painted by my daughter with some addition by myself, mainly painting the tools in the tool box silver, as I though it looked better that way. This is the only bit that I have changed on all the models that they painted.

Ok, now for the Ork's amongst you, there are building in the next two pictures, it's just there very camouflaged.

Honestly, my daughter painted these purple, not because of any desire to make sneaky Ork building but because she likes purple. The red is there because her brother told her she needed to paint the Ork symbols red.

My oil Derek, basic paint scheme again but with the red Ork symbols and a bit of bronze in there for some details. You can't see very clearly in the pictures but the lights in they eyes of the big Ork symbols is actually painted yellow to look like a proper light.

These were painted up by son and are very shiny, so classically Orkish as well. Again red symbols and even a few little details such as pipe work.

One thing I forgot to photograph or mention, are the small bridge sections. I painted these up as well and you can just see them on the edges of the photos of the fort sections. Both fairly simple but with some basic wood effect on the planks that make up the middle sections. I'd doesn't look very good i the pictures but it's quite nice in hand.

Holiday plans

So with being in stuck in the house for a week or more, I decided on a plan to get my Kill Zone Octarius terrain painted up. No this plan doesn't involve me painting much, one piece of terrain as it turns out, no, the plan involves getting the small people in the house to paint them. Now, the beauty of this plan is several fold. Firstly I don't have to paint the majority of them, secondly there is no wrong way to paint the terrain, so I don't have to worry about how its painted and lastly, it's keeping the kids entertained.

We sprayed the terrain black with some cheap car spray paint, maybe not as completely as needed for main models but more than enough for basic terrain prices.

The only issue was the uneven number of terrain pieces, so I've opted to paint up the oil storage, as it's the only odd piece and only singular type of terrain.

In addition, we sprayed up two hellbrutes, one each for the kids to paint as well, again one each. The original one is for the young man and the modified one is for the young lady.

I'll post up pictures when their finished with them but I'm taking a completely hands off approach so it will be interesting to see the results. That's if blogger eventually allows me to post this, as apparently it violated the guidelines, how I'm not sure but I'll keep trying to get this posted.

New terrain peice

I've had this piece for a while, I just haven't managed to get it painted until now. I painted it as a bit of a palette cleanser, although it wasn't much of a pallette cleanser as it used all the same colours as I was using on my other models! The only difference was that it's significantly bigger that the Primaris marines I'm currently painting.

As you can see I've used the same colours as my Eagle Knights chapter, to help tie it in to some of the games I'll play. It also helps it stand out as a sort of centre piece terrain model on the board as it's very different from all the other terrain pieces, which are mostly quite dull in colour.

I spent a bit of time on the interior, trying to make it look more used and less like just a lump of metal. I even added a little bit of "graffiti" on the inside, making it look like it's been used as a little bunker or staging point for imperial troops.

Lastly I added the blood splatter details, which add to the use as a staging post, with the blood splatter being either from defending to point or dealing with the wounded. I had considered adding bother details, that might work as discarded kit and equipment but decided to just leave it as it was and not overly complicate things, as I like my terrain to add to the models and story not take centre stage in it.

Now, I know that a lot of people will notice the print lines and markings on the model. This is because it's a 3d printed model I got off a fellow club mate who had printed them as test pieces for his new machine. I have a few barrels as well that I still have to paint but they are for another time. I may have to look at getting a few more pieces to go with this, maybe a fallen dread or similar, maybe something like these;

More terrain

Right, this will be the last lot of terrain for a while, I promise. I still have all the MDF buildings to spray and I'm hopeful I can get them done over the summer months when I can spray in the garage without freezing to death, although the new garage door should help with that, when it's fitted that is.

Anyway, here are the new terrain. First up the loading system. This is using bits from the Mantic Terrain Crate I got a while ago but modifying the prices with some plasticard and tubing. The original set had the top sections sitting on sections of the large pipes, so I had to build some sort of support structure. I have tried a few things over the years I had this set but none have worked out how I wanted. This however I think works rather well. The solid sections of in the middle work as line of sight blocking terrain and hid even the tallest primaris models.

I tried to make them look like concrete blocks, sort of like the precast slabs that you get, with support columns at each end. There is one section that is supposed to look like a wood plank repair section and there is the green mould\gunge\ooze or whatever it is. This is there to add some extra colour to the otherwise dark prices but also to his some truly epic gaps in the construction. Some of the panels were not well fitted at all, a sign of both my inability to scratch build and also my haste when building these things. Overall though I think these look really effective.

Next up are some more pipes, just little ones this time. These are not really much use in terms of game terrain but are something else to add to the table to take up some of the open ground to make it look less open. Very basic in construction but a nice little addition to the terrain pool.

Lastly here are some pipe storage rack type things. These were built to add some addition container sized terrain features, that when placed with the two containers can form a large blocking price in the centre of the board. Simply made from some plumbing pipe I had spare and a few bits of plasticard left over from the other builds, painted to look like concrete pipe. Oh and there is the small pipe rack as well, again just bashed together with left over pipe and plasticard.

I still haven't found the rest of the crates and also some of the other bits from the Terrain Crate, which I had completely forgotten about until I looked back at the previous post from when I bought the terrain crate. I really have no idea where some of these pieces have disappeared to, hopefully I'll come across them at some point, so I can add them to the collection.

Combat patrol terrain

After playing a few games with my son a few weeks ago, before I broke my let, I decided it was time to actually paint up some of my terrain. The majority of my terrain in MDF buildings and will really require spraying up with rattle cans, which I have in the garage. I think I showed a couple of test buildings a while ago. For the recent games however, I have been using some.more industrial prices, as we're only playing 500 point games and infantry models only, so no requirement to have big line of sight blocking terrain.

As you can see, I've kept most of it fairly basic. The majority of it is just black primer with various layers of silver dry brush to build up some of the details. It's all fairly quick and basic but should be more than sufficient to create a good looking battle field devoid of grey plastic.

The pipes are from two sets, the main ones, shown below, are from the GW Promethium Pipe Relay. The others, at the back of the picture above, are from a Mantic Terrain Crate, specifically the Industrial Accessories set.

Barrels, every battle field needs some barrels. These have been painted to give them a weathered effect, which I think works quite well.

A crate. Now I should have a few more of these somewhere but they seem to have gone wallies. I think I should have at least 4 big and 4 small crates but this is the only one I can find right now. When I find the others they will be painted up.in a similar fashion to this one, although in different colours for some variety.

Some power generators from the terrain crate, again just dry brushed up. I spent a little extra time on the screens to give the pieces some extra detail and help them pop a little more on the table. I quite like how the screens have turned out.

The pieces are incomplete, however I painted them up anyway. They need some sort of mountings, as the two pieces top left are actually angled. I will build this as some sort of loading system and make the gap under the tracks solid to add some more line of sight blocking terrain. I've got some ideas and items in my eBay watched list to build this, so we'll see if I can get it done.

Containers, where would we be without containers. These are my two GW ones, one with a silver finish and one with a gold finish. Again there were dry brushed and it's really obvious on the pictures the bits that I've missed, such as the bolter mounts and the bits in-between the 'legs' on the bottom. Oh well, I'm sure I'll fix them at some point.

I plan on adding some more containers to the mix and have some in eBay that I'm looking at getting. If I get these, I would have 6 containers, which should be enough to give me a good amount of big blocking terrain if I need it.

My old Aegis Defence Line is also in the box now. With them not havi g any meaningful rules in the game now, there is little.point in me taking it as an actual fortification but it works well as scatter terrain.

The complete collection in its storage box. As you can see there is still plenty of space in there for additional terrain. The pieces in the bottom left form a small pipe network, which I may well build if I have bits left over from building the loading systems, otherwise they may just be added as features to those pieces.

I plan on gathering enough terrain to fill this box and no more, making it easy to transport and store. I can combine this with my other terrain should I need some bigger pieces.
