Room 203 from the east, view of the west wall with the passage to tower IV on the left. Granito floor inlaid with mosaic. Columns in different colored stone, dark capital, decorated ribs. Plastered wall, painted white. The walls were originally made of different colored stone, see F-00109. The original decoration is described by De Stuers as follows: 'The four column bundles are painted red-brown with yellow rafters; the capitals bronze colored; the arches white with red fillets and leaf ornament; the vaults show the joined yellow bricks and red stones along the arches; on the vault along the arches tendrils with bronze-green leaves; the bone arches are white with bronze-green foliage; the tools of the various works of art are painted on the keystones of the arches. The four pillars and the walls are white with red joints, and gray bands; a frieze with a yellow and green ornament runs on a red ground near the intermediate sill of the windows. The day side of the windows has an ornamentation of the same colors on dark ground, which enhances the play of the light. ' (De Stuers p. 23, 24)

Western courtyard, after renovation. Stairs to the entrance to the VI tower in the southeast corner of the western courtyard (see photo 501). The wooden floor in the courtyard caused so many problems that it was replaced by a raised concrete floor in 1927. This created a low basement, 2.25 meters, and the raised exhibition floor that can be seen here in the photo. Three halls in the courtyard were then furnished with stretcher walls. The original façades of the courtyard were hidden from view by a low boundary wall. In the interspace a 'proliferation of channels and pipes' developed. The walls are painted white.

Renovation of the western cabinet 272 in 1926. The photo shows that the decorative paintings have been partially painted over. Door frame masonry with number and ornaments painted in the arched area. Decorated wide frieze on frame resting on consoles. Flat paneling. Window frame decorated with paintings. The 1926 annual report states that the west cabinets and west pavilion were evacuated, the central heating was changed, bulkheads were installed, passageways were made, and paintwork was done, which was completed by December of that year. 'The cabinets (No. 215-219 and 270-274) were built for paintings of the small size, which the Dutch School is so rich in. Each cabinet receives light through an upright window in the north wall and is vaulted with a cross vault, which shape was preferred over others, because the side walls, in order to be better lit, are not rectangular but placed slightly oblique on the north or outer wall. . Each cabinet thus forms a regular trapezium, the base of which is larger than the opposite side. Some cabinets have simple cross vaults, others have vaults supported on ribs. The painting is different from all of them. Examples of this are given in plates Nos. 40, 41, 52. At the start of the vaults, broad friezes with all kinds of stylized flowers in different shades close off the walls on which the paintings hang. These walls are red-brown or bronze-green, as this is best for the paintings on display; the lighter-hued friezes form a soft transition to the brightly colored vaults, which do much to provide a pleasant and favorable light on the exhibited. In each corner is a corbel bearing the mural arch and the beginning of the vault. In accordance with the construction, which requires that the diagonal arches first separate from the other arches at a certain height, the motifs of the painted decoration leave the horizontal direction at that same height to follow the sloping of the vault construction. (fig 52 fig 2) '(De Stuers) In 1886 the lower parts of the windows were covered. Double windows were installed in 1889 and awnings in 1902. During the renovation of FA Eschauzier, a few passages between the cabinets were moved so that an alternation was created.

At dusk a voice shall call afar,
A lone voice like the whippoorwill's;
And, on her shimmering brow one star,
Night shall descend the western hills.
L’ENVOI
The friends I have without a peer
Beyond the western ocean’s glow,
Whither the faerie galleys steer,
They do not know: how should they know?
And when the dance is done, the trees
Are left to Peace and the brown woodpecker,
And on the western slopes of sky
The day's blue eye begins to flicker.
Old fields, and clear blue summer days,
Old meadows, green with grass, and trees
That shimmer through the trembling haze
And whiten in the western breeze.
In tears, and mourning sore,
Then to his grave we bore
That brave and hardy one;
On a green knoll alone,
Beneath a mighty stone
That sees the western sun.
The western sky was red as blood,
Darker grew the oaken-wood;
“Thief and carle, where are ye gone?
Why are we in the wood alone?
Deus est Deus pauperum.
