This article proposes a periodisation of the narrative work of Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986). Two meta-literary notions guide the first period: that of an absolute text and that of a text governed by chance, in which the former is linked to the Kabbalah and the latter to Gnosticism. The next period, which is the focal topic of this study, is governed by the notion of figure in the biblical sense of the term. Borges introduces this notion in his 1949 essay "The Mirror Of Enigmas" that summons texts by Léon Bloy, Thomas de Quincey and Novalis. Through these influences, Borges sketches a figurative poetics whose apocalyptic character situates the work thus produced in the indecision between the eschatology and the scatology.

Dos nociones metaliterarias signan la primera etapa, la noción de un texto absoluto y la de un texto gobernado por el azar, vinculadas, la primera a la Cábala, la segunda al Gnosticismo. La etapa siguiente, tema principal del presente estudio, está gobernada por la noción de figura en el sentido bíblico del término. Cet article propose une périodisation de l’œuvre narrative de Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986). Deux notions métalittéraires signalent la première étape, celle d’un texte absolu et celle d’un texte gouverné par le hasard, liées pour l’une à la Cabbale, pour l’autre au Gnosticisme. L’étape suivante, objet principal de cette étude, est gouvernée par la notion de figure dans le sens biblique du terme. Borges présente cette notion dans « Le Miroir des énigmes », essai de 1940 où sont convoqués des textes de Léon Bloy, Thomas de Quincey et Novalis. À travers ces influences, Borges ébauche une poétique figurative dont le caractère apocalyptique laisse l’œuvre ainsi produite dans l’indécision entre l’eschatologie et la scatologie.

La capacidad simbólica es, sin duda, el soberano pilar fundacional del ser humano desde los techos de cavernas de la Prehistoria, con gráciles representaciones donde aparecen las primeras simbolizaciones en los tiempos iniciales que conjuraban el cúmulo de sentimientos más puramente humanas, hasta la placa de la sonda espacial Pioneer X, esa fotografía del ser humano a modo de saludo interestelar que alcanzará remotas galaxias. El mito, la conciencia de lo español y algunas de las más sublimes aportaciones al canon literario occidental son tres vértices sustanciales en el presente libro.

Cet ouvrage oriente la réflexion philosophique sur le romantisme allemand dans une voie nouvelle ayant pour point de départ la singularité des paysages peints par Caspar David Friedrich, et pour concept opératoire majeur la romantisation du monde, dont Novalis a fait le programme d’une philosophie spécifique. Analyser la critique par Hegel du style de Friedrich ; étudier l’invention par Novalis, dans le prolongement de Herder, de quelque chose comme un paysage-corps ; suivre au-delà de Kant le destin du concept de sublime : tels sont les moments principaux d’un parcours qui permet de mettre au jour les liens existant entre la peinture de Friedrich et la problématique de la « révélation » énoncée par Novalis dans ses fragments sur la philosophie romantique.

RESUMO: A fim de compartilhar o fórum de reflexões literárias concernentes ao Bildungsroman, o artigo que apresento resulta da minha pesquisa sobre a  literatura  de  Novalis,  a  partir  da  compreensão  dos  contextos  e debates  poéticos  que  concernem  à  composição  de Heinrich  von Ofterdingen,  romance  que  permaneceu  inconcluso  e  passível  de interpretações  dos  manuscritos  e  da  crítica  dos  prototextos,  após  a morte  do  escritor.  A  essa  incompletude  circunstancial  soma-se  a  do caráter específico  do  gênero  textual  romance  composto  de  abstrações de  valores  morais,  religiosos  e  de  personificações  dos  elementos  do mundo  orgânico  e  inorgânico,  o  que  pressupõe  a  ocorrência  de  uma alegoria literária.  Considerando  a  complexidade  do  texto,  este estudo desencadeia    a    leitura    crítica    com    os    primeiros    comentários identificadores  resultantes  da  leitura  atentiva,  visando  a  tradução,  a descrição,  a  análise  e  a  interpretação  de  um  fenômeno  poético  mais amplo, o Romantismo.

ABSTRACT: In order  to  take  part  in  the  forum  of  literary  reflections  concerning  the Bildungsroman,  the  paper  I  present  results  from  my  research  studies  on  the literature  of  Novalis,  from the  understanding  of  the  contexts  and  poetic debates  about  the  composition  of  Heinrich  von  Ofterdingen,  novel  which remains unfinished and passible for the interpretation of the manuscripts and of the criticism of the prototexts, after the death of the writer. Besides of this circumstantial  incompleteness,  it  adds  to  it  the  specific  character  of  the novel’s textual genre, composed of abstractions of moral and religious values and  personifications  of  the  elements  of  the  organic  and  inorganic  world, which  presupposes  the  occurrence  of  a  literary  allegory.  Considering  the complexity  of  Novalis  literary  text,  this  study  triggers  the  critical  reading with  its  first  identifying  comments  that  resulted  from  close  reading,  aiming at the translation, description, analysis and interpretation of a broader poetic phenomenon: Romanticism..

Der sehr verschlüsselte Text der Lehrlinge zu Sais wurde unterschiedlcih interpretiert, teils strukturalistisch, teils auf die wissenschaftlichen Vorlagen bezogen. Diese Arbeit zeigt erstmals, wie beide Interpratationen sinnvoll zusammengeführt werden können, indem nämlich das Kompositionsprinzip einer "zyklischen Ineinandersetzung" den naturwissenschaftlich-philosophischen Gedanken und Inhalten entsprechen.

This book argues that the rediscovery of mystical theology in nineteenth-century Germany not only helped inspire idealism and romanticism, but also planted the seeds of their overcoming by way of critical materialism. Thanks in part to the Neoplatonic turn in the works of J. G. Fichte, as well as the enthusiasm of mining engineer Franz X. von Baader, mystical themes gained a critical currency, and mystical texts returned to circulation. This reawakening of the mystical tradition influenced romantic and idealist thinkers such as Novalis and Hegel, and also shaped later critical interventions by Marx, Benjamin, and Bataille. Rather than rehearsing well-known connections to Swedenborg or Böhme, this study goes back further to the works of Meister Eckhart, Nicholas of Cusa, Catherine of Siena, and Angela of Foligno. The book offers a new perspective on the reception of mystical self-interrogation in nineteenth-century German thought and will appeal to scholars of philosophy, history, theology, and religious studies.

Cet article, paru dans la revue Le Texte et l’idée #30-2016, explore le rapport qu’entretiennent les romantiques aux reliques des défunts aimés, et aux lieux qu’ils ont habités. Il analyse la transformation des cultures funéraires au XIXe siècle et la façon dont cela se reflète en littérature, la représentation des corps dans le rêve, et la naissance d’un fétichisme des lieux et des choses. Il propose également une typologie des lieux hantés.

Seit ihren Anfängen muss die christliche Mystik mit der absolut geheimnisvollen, unnahbaren und unsagbaren Natur Gottes ringen – ein Wesen, dessen Eigenschaften von der menschlichen Sprache nicht erfasst werden können und dessen Figur für den menschlichen Verstand unvorstellbar bleibt, so dass er nur noch als „Dunkelheit“ erscheinen mag. Im 2. Buch Mose verbietet Gott dem Propheten, sein Gesicht zu betrachten , und tritt in einer dunklen Wolke vor  - diese göttliche Dunkelheit wird zum Schlüsselbild der abendländischen Mystik, wie zum Beispiel in ihrer ersten grundlegenden und jahrhundertelang einflussreichen Schrift, die ‚Theologia mystica’ des Pseudo-Dionysius Aeropagita, die mit dem Versuch einer Ergründung der „göttlichen Finsternis“  ansetzt. Der Autor der ‚Theologia mystica’ führt anschließend die Unzulänglichkeit der Sprache angesichts Gottes aus , indem er in Bezug auf Gott alle mögliche Namen, Attribute und Prädikate verneint, und feststellen muss, dass Gott jenseits jeglicher Behauptung und jeglicher Negation steht. Aber gerade dieses Versagen der Sprache, das mittels Sprache bekämpft wird, diese Behauptung im eigentlichen Moment des Sprechens der Unmöglichkeit, über Gott zu sprechen, wird zum fruchtbarsten Paradoxon, mit dem der Gottsuchende ringt, und zum Anhaltspunkt zahlreicher mystischer Traktate, von der Spätantike bis zum 18. Jahrhundert. So der Anfang der ‚Theologia deutsch’, einer der wichtigsten Texte der mittelalterlichen Mystik im deutschsprachigen Raum: „Das Vollkommene ist allen Kreaturen unbegreiflich, unaussprechlich und unerkennbar in dem als Kreatur. Darum nennt man das Vollkommene nicht, denn es ist dieser keines. Die Kreatur als Kreatur mag dieses nicht erkennen noch begreifen, nennen noch denken.“  Gott ist das Vollkommene, und der Autor der ‚Theologia deutsch’ bezeichnet Kreaturen als „unvollkommen“ oder „geteilt“, und vergleicht ihr Wissen mit dem „Abglanz“ oder „Schein“ der Quelle des Lichts. In dieser ersten Brechung des Lichts, in diesem wesentlichen Unterschied zwischen dem ursprünglichen Licht und seinem Abglanz, zwischen dem ewigen göttlichen Wort und dem Wort im menschlichen Mund, liegt also die auf den ersten Blick unüberbrückbare Distanz zum göttlichen Grund. „Du sprichst doch“, so der Einwand eines imaginären Verfechters zu Beginn der ‚Theologia deutsch’: Aufgabe der Mystik ist es also, mit dieser Unzulänglichkeit der Sprache zu ringen, um „doch zu sprechen“. Vergleiche, Metaphern und Oxymora sind beliebte Mittel, um die Mängel der Sprache auszugleichen, auch wenn sie jedoch durch ihre Notwendigkeit von der Distanz zum Objekt des Sprechens zeugen: nur durch solche Künste mag versucht werden, das Ergebnis ekstatischer Visionen doch mitzuteilen – wie der 1575 in der Lausitz geborene Theosoph und Mystiker Jakob Böhme es tut, indem er an zahlreichen Stellen seines umfangreichen Werkes ankündigt: „Hie muss ich nun in gleichnus schreiben“ , um das Wunder in Worte zu fassen, das ihm in einer Vision offenbart wurde. Das ganze Werk Jakob Böhmes, von der frühen ‚Morgenröthe’ bis zum Spätwerk ‚Mysterium Magnum’, bemüht sich, in den geheimnisvollen Grund ohne Grund, oder gemäß Böhme „Ungrund“ des Gottes, einzudringen.
Der Eindruck, der die Lektüre Böhmes  auf Novalis gemacht, ist bekannt – man muss nur auf die Schlusszeile des Gedichtes „An Tieck“  denken, und an den Brief an denselben im Februar 1800.  Wir schließen ihm Böhmes englischen Lehrling John Pordage (1607-1681) an, den Novalis durch Dieterich Tiedemann  entdeckte, und dessen ‚Theologia mystica’ er laut neuesten Entdeckungen eingängiger kennen mochte, so dass die Novalis Gesellschaft sie in seine „imaginäre Bibliothek“ aufgenommen hat.  Eine Parallellektüre von Böhme, Pordage und den ‚Hymnen an die Nacht’ wird hier versucht, und kreist um folgende Frage: kann die Trennung der Brechung aufgehoben werden, das Licht des Ungrundes erblickt werden, und die Sprache davon berichten?

Am 8. Mai 2016 wurde meine Dissertation "Novalis und die negative Theologie - Träume und Abgrund in der europäischen Romantik" (in französischer Sprache) mit dem Novalis Preis 2016 in Jena ausgezeichnet. Am Vorabend durfte ich bei einem wissenschaftlichen Symposium meine Arbeit synthetisch vorstellen.

1. Einleitung
Unter dem Begriff „Romantik“ versteht man in der deutschen Literaturgeschichte eine literarische Epoche, die historisch betrachtet von etwa 1789 - kurz nach dem Aufbruch der Französischen Revolution - bis ungefähr 1848 dauerte. Sie ist am Ende der Aufklärerischen Periode als „letzte Entwicklungsstufe des deutschen Idealismus und Blüte der sogenannten deutschen Bewegung“  entstanden (Spätaufklärung).

ABSTRACT: This article focuses on the apparently paradoxical remarks of Novalis on landscape, which followed the famous “Romantikertreffen” of August 1798: that decisive meeting of the “early German romantics” on the occasion of a communal visit to the painting and sculpture galleries in Dresden. We analyze how Novalis surpasses the phenomenological conception of landscape painting proposed by August Wilhelm Schlegel by resorting to the "incorrect" categories of sculpture and haptic sense to talk about the feeling for nature that governs landscape painting. This is the aesthetics of Herder – his reflections in the treatise “Sculpture” (1778) on the actual concrete and tangible force of the beautiful and the central importance it accords to the experience of one’s own body (a highly modern conception) – which is diverted here in a typical Novalisian gesture that we will show is consistent with his philosophy. The reception of Herder has contributed to the development in Novalis of a Pygmalionic aesthetics of contact with things that casts a different light on early romanticism: it is not only the exclusive exercise of a critical reflexivity that assumes distance, but also of a sensibility that seeks a tactile meeting point as it were between what is separated.

RESUME : L’article s’intéresse aux remarques à première vue paradoxales de Novalis sur le paysage, qui font suite au fameux « Romantikertreffen » d’août 1798 : la rencontre décisive des « premiers romantiques allemands » à la faveur d’une visite commune des Galeries de peinture et de sculpture de Dresde. Nous analysons la manière dont Novalis dépasse la conception phénoménologique de la peinture de paysage proposée par August Wilhelm Schlegel en recourant aux “mauvaises” catégories de la « plastique », donc de la sculpture, et du sens haptique pour parler du sentiment pour la nature qui préside à la peinture paysagère. C’est l’esthétique de Herder — la réflexion du traité « La Plastique » (1778) sur la force proprement concrète et tangible du beau et l’importance centrale (très moderne) qu’elle accorde à l’expérience du corps propre — qui se trouve ici détournée selon un geste typiquement novalissien dont nous montrons la cohérence avec sa philosophie. La réception de Herder a contribué, ce faisant, à la formation, chez Novalis, d’une esthétique pygmalionesque du contact avec les choses qui projette un éclairage différent sur le premier romantisme allemand : il n’est pas l’exercice exclusif d’une réflexivité critique supposant l’écart, mais tout autant celui d’une sensibilité qui cherche la réunion pour ainsi dire tactile de ce qui est séparé.

This paper considers how women and gender are conceptualised within early German Romanticism and argues that work by early German Romantic women should be addressed in scholarship on this movement. The chapter addresses feminist critiques of early German Romanticism as exemplified by the work of Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis, concluding that an essentialist view of traditional gender characteristics informs central aspects of these writers’ work, including their view of the relationship between human beings and nature and their theories of language and poetry. The paper argues that a thoroughgoing critique of gender categories and development of the implications of this critique are found in the early German Romantic writings, not of Schlegel and Novalis, but of Dorothea Veit-Schlegel and Karoline von Günderrode.

Réunissant quelques-uns des plus éminents spécialistes français et étrangers du peintre Caspar David Friedrich et du romantisme allemand, l'ambition de l'ouvrage est de projeter un éclairage pluri-disciplinaire et international sans équivalent en langue française sur un artiste aujourd'hui considéré comme majeur. La finalité de l'ouvrage est double. Réfléchir à l'expérience du regard appelée par une peinture qui pâtit aujourd'hui d'un excès de visibilité, jusqu'à pouvoir paraître kitsch. Et donc, l'effet des tableaux de Friedrich tendant alors à s'affaiblir, amener à les considérer d'un oeil neuf et en tout cas attentif. D'autre part, dans la mesure où l'artiste est souvent considéré, cette fois sur un plan plus théorique, comme la quintessence d'un romantisme typiquement germanique, intégrer la peinture de Caspar David Friedrich à une analyse du romantisme allemand qui mobilise non seulement l'histoire de l'art et la littérature, mais s'élargit à la philosophie.

The following collection of essays could have had as a subtitle "Towards a New Sophiology." Essays 3, 4, 5, and 8 bear directly on this subject. Apart from the final essay, “Valentin Tomberg and Dostoevski,” all the other essays presented here appeared (in this same order) as articles in the Starlight Journal of the Sophia Foundation of North America over the years 2014-2019. The production of these articles took place during the period that immediately followed the publication of O’Meara’s book, "The Way of Novalis," and should be seen as an outgrowth from the Sophianic direction of that book. In these essays, slightly expanded from the articles, O’Meara elaborates on the Sophianic mission of the Foundation with reference to the main Master-Individualities to whom the Foundation has linked itself, notably Rudolf Steiner, Valentin Tomberg, Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg), as well as the Master Peter Deunov. However, other well-known individuals are also considered in some depth, including Vladimir Solovyov, Pavel Florensky, Sergius Bulgakov, Fyodor Dostoevski, Carl Jung, as well as some of the Master-artists of the Renaissance, most notably Michelangelo and da Vinci. Estelle Isaacson and Ita Wegman also assume a significant role in this collection. How to put our arms around the demands being made on us with respect to our spiritual evolution now and in the future may be said to have been the main purpose of this series of essays.

La filosofia di Novalis tende infatti al sistema in maniera paradossale: dopo gli studi su Fichte, Kant e Hemsterhuis, abbandona progressivamente l’ambito tradizionale per entrare in un dialogo stretto e interno con le scienze della natura, dalla matematica alla fisica, dalla chimica alla medicina, dalla mineralogia alla cristallologia. Recent translations of Novalis’s work into English should occasion fresh endeavours in the field of Novalis studies, aimed at English readers who are without German. In this book John O’Meara presents his own understanding of what Novalis offers to these readers, who have been given firmer access to his life and to his philosophical works than ever before. O’Meara traces Novalis’s philosophical development meticulously, finishing up with an in-depth analysis of his Hymns to the Night, the Spiritual Songs, and his main and unfinished novel, Henry von Ofterdingen. Emphasis is on the process by which Novalis’s literary works manifest as direct expressions of his philosophical explorations, which bear fruit, eventually, in visions of sweeping majesty and annunciatory grandeur.
