Gibson Award for Best Acoustic Guitar Player in 1991, Ivor Novello Award and in 2006, a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio, and he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to music on July 2011, he also was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Aberdeen.  He was named by Rolling Stones Magazine's as one the Top 20 Guitarist of All Time and considered one of the UK's most outstanding Songwriters and Musicians.  The recipient of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Mojo's Les Paul Award.  Thompson was most recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by Americana Music Association.
