Blind from a young age, he performed with his son, Guitarist Merle Watson, for over 15 years until Merle's death in 1985 in an accident on the family farm.

J.E. Mainer was an American Old Time Bluegrass Musician and the legend of Country and Bluegrass Music from Weaverville, North Carolina. He learned to play Banjo and Fiddle from an early age. He and his brother Wade Mainer formed the first band together about 1934 called Mainer Mountaineers String Band. J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers was actually one of the first bands to play Bluegrass and help to provide a foundation for Country and Bluegrass Music as we know it today. J.E. Mainer was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall Of Fame on October 11, 2012.
