The Wheels on the Firetruck...

This summer we will celebrate our community heroes, Firefighters! I found this cute set in our files that was made by a previous librarian. Here's the link to print out 'The Wheels on the (Fire)truck'. I add each piece as we sing the song. I couldn't leave well enough alone LOL! I did stiffen the small pieces with glue on the back and added glitter to the light that I place on the top of the firetruck. I used black fabric paint on the hook, hose and the siren (white part in front of the light) I also used fabric paint to update the two little firefighters too. I do have another post about Firefighters and here are some ideas @ Storytime with Miss Tara and friends. Check out the resources @ MakingLearningFun.com. You can listen to a cute song called Fire Truck by Ivan Ulz sung on Youtube

Dalmations!

I have a coworker that has shared an adorable rhyme he made up and a set of 5 cute dalmatian puppies he made for his Firefighter/Firetruck theme. I made my own set of felt doggies and tweaked his pattern just a bit by adding large google eyes instead of felt eyes for the puppies.  I had the eyes and was too lazy to cut out 10 more small circles!  Anyway, here are the doggies I made and the link to Mr. Thad's rhyme; Five Dalmatians

These are about 5 in.circles for the bodies and 3 in. circles for the heads and a gazillion small black dots for the spots and noses. O.K.  so it's not a gazillion...it felt like it as I was cutting them out! That's the main reason for the large google eyes; I was tired of cutting small circles. I used some black slick fabric paint for the mouth.  I might add a little red tongue to a couple of the pups just for variety. I think Dalmatians are so much Fun with Friends at Storytime!

Calling All Firetrucks!

I'm still in the fall mode for planning and remembered that October is Fire Safety month. When I taught preschool the firefighters would bring the firetruck to our school. Most of my 3 year olds loved it.   My grandson, J. loved firetrucks when he was 2 and 3 years old.  He fixated on Firefighters! Speeding! Spraying! Saving! by Patricia Hubbell, when he was about that age and we read it a LOT! Another great firefighter book is Firefighters A to Z by Chris A. Demarest.  Check out this link for the National Fire Prevention Association here.  I decided to make a rhyme/activity with a firetruck Ellison diecut.  I embellished the diecut a little by adding either yellow or lt. blue to the window opening and a shiny sequin 'light' for the top of the firetruck. I hand out diecut firetrucks to the kiddos and then as I say the rhyme and put my firetruck up they can 'drive' their firetruck to the flannel board too.  I eventually want to make this a filefolder color recognition activity for our toddler storytime.

Fire! Fire! Emergency!
Someone is in trouble.
Calling all *blue  firetrucks
Come on the double!

(repeat until all the children have added
their firetruck to the board)

Spray the water,
Now the fire is out!
"Everyone is safe!"
We all shout.

*green; yellow; orange; purple; black;
white; pink; brown; red.

Firetrucks and firefighters are a lot of Fun with Friends at Storytime!
