We Do

Hello Everyone!
Happy 4th!!  Before we go off to our neighborhood barbecue, I wanted to share a little poster with you!  I have been so inspired by all the family "We Do" signs I've been seeing, I decided to create one for the classroom.  I have seen a few of these as well, but I wanted to come up with a "We Do" for every letter of the alphabet. Here's what I ended up with.  My homage to the "We Do."

Hope you enjoy it!
And you enjoy your day!
Till next time, thanks for stopping by for a peek!

JOY

Hello Everyone,
Joy.  It is such a simple and small word. But those of you who know me know that this word is one that I want to surround myself with.  I believe that when you do experience true joy, you know it!  I have this word displayed no less than ten times in my house in one form or another.  I also have it displayed in my classroom. My students all know that Joy is my favorite word and what we strive for!
When I think of my classroom and the kids with whom I work alongside, I want there to be an abundance of joy.  Joy is everywhere and all around us. I want to have a smile on my face and on my kids' faces because of a joy-filled classroom. It should never get so busy, so stress-filled, so crazy that you can't see the joy around you. I want to give my kids the joy of learning new things.
On the last day of school, my sweet friend, who also happened to be my room mom, gave me a book I will treasure always.  Thank you L!!!

Every page is a statement about the wonder of joy.
It got me thinking about what education has to do with joy and lo and behold Albert Einstein said it best!
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
So....I, of course, had to create some little mini posters with this quote on them.  4 different designs!

I'm going to print out the bandanna one for my classroom.  If you would like some...You can joyfully click here! Yes! They're free! :)

Here's to finding your joy!
Thanks for stopping by and peeking in on mine!
Have a great weekend!

If I Can Think It...

Hello Everyone!
My summer has been off to a busy start. Lots of Professional Development, lots of curriculum writing and integrating for the district, campus retreat...and that was just this week!  Our district does an amazing job of providing so many opportunities for us to grow as educators.  One book study many of us chose to do is using the book "...And with a Light Touch" by Carol Avery. (readily available on Amazon)
I have just started the book but am thrilled already with the validation I am feeling.  The author portrays a classroom where a responsive environment provides some exciting growth in students' reading and writing.  Starting with what interests each kiddo and growing from there makes so much sense! That is how our district encourages teachers to teach writing. From that writing comes reading. I couldn't help but to pause and recreate my little mini poster.  I've posted this before with a different design, but melonheadz graphics are becoming some of my favs, so I knew I had to use some of her cute kidlets.

This little poster reminds me and the kids that we can all be writers and readers!!

Well, off to do some more reading!!  Happy Days!!

All Of Our Noses Are Here!

Hello Everyone!
We have 8 days left in the school year.  As I work on my End Of Year DVD for my sweeties, I can't help but realize that so many pictures I've captured this year are of my kids reading...noses in books!! I strive to incorporate as much "nose time" as I can throughout our learning day.  "Nose time" does not include teacher directed activities, reader's response activities, or worksheets! It includes kids with books in hands and noses in books! :) 60-90 minutes!  Research tells us that there is no substitute for real reading if we want our kids to grow as readers, writers, thinkers, talkers, and communicators!
I also noticed that those noses were in lots of different comfortable places.  When you think about your own reading, you read best when you are comfortable. Right??? I love to snuggle up with a book in my oversized leather chair. (Or on a beach towel with my toes in the sand!) It is amazing how you can drift away with a book when you are comfortable!! I let my kids sit anywhere when reading independently. They do get creative!!
Today I'm sharing a couple of mini posters to help motivate you and your kids to have lots of "Nose Time!"

Reading in the tub!!!  Rub-a-dub-dub!

We love to read outside!!

 Any way you like it!!

Even under your desk!

Find your cozy spot and get your nose in a book!!

Write to Teach

Hello Everyone,
We are about to begin our unit on "How To" writing pieces.  Our youngest authors will be learning that they can use their writing to teach someone how to do something.  They are all experts at doing something, right? :) What a way to share their enthusiasm for telling how something is done.  Let them write!!  I am sharing my mini unit on how to teach this important component of our littles' writing portfolios.  This unit can be used in conjunction with any theme, science, social studies, etc. that may be in your curriculum already.  During our landforms unit, I will have them write about how they made the Edible Landforms Cookie.  You can get that unit ***Here! :)
Here are a couple of shots of what is included in the writing unit.

Teaching the concept of using transition words is emphasized in this unit.

The mini unit is 16 pages of mini posters, planners, and mini book pages to help your young authors become teachers.  You can get it ***Here! :) Please leave me a note if you think this is something you can use, or if you would like to see a different format.

Thanks for stopping by our little window and taking a peek!
Have a wonder-filled weekend!
Joyfully!

Retelling Rope 3 (A little more rustic)

Hello Everyone,
I've had so many great e-mail messages about my retelling ropes, and I had a little time on my hands while traveling to Chicago to see my mother in law (15 hour drive!), I decided to try creating another set of posters and icons for a more rustic Retelling Rope.  You can read my initial posts about Retelling Ropes here! This new set is organized in the same way. The only thing I didn't get a chance to show you was the anchor chart. (Sorry-I didn't bring any posterboard or markers with me). Here are some pics from this third set.

For your free 17 page Rustic Retelling Rope unit, click here

Hope you can use these!  As always, thanks for your support in this adventure and thanks for taking time out to take a peek into our little window on wonder!
Have a great rest of the week.

Retelling Rope

Hello Everyone!
I almost forgot to post one other thing.  I have had a ton of questions and e-mails about my story retelling rope that I posted on last year. You can read about that here! :)  I have been doing retelling ropes for a long time.  Does anybody remember "Project Read?"  The author of that amazing curriculum was my inspiration for this way of teaching kids about the parts of a story and extending that into retelling.  "Retelling" is an important component of discriminating comprehension in our beginning readers. Making it hands on is important to me!
Kids almost always cement learning better when they can incorporate as many senses as possible.
I took some time to redo my retelling rope icons, my retelling poem, made some little posters about the parts of a story, and redid my anchor chart.
Here are some pics of what this little unit includes.

Here are some pics of finished products, anchor chart and student retelling rope.

For your free mini unit on retelling grab the rope and click here!

I hope this helps with your lessons on retelling!!  Hold on and have fun!!

Shhhh! We're building our Stamina!

Hello Everyone!
I hope I'm not interrupting and interfering with your own stamina building! :)  But I just had a quick post about our stamina work.  Stamina for our first graders is the ability to stay focused long enough to hear the directions, follow through with several steps of those directions, read for greater lengths of time, write for greater lengths of time, and even sit in one spot in the cafeteria for 30 minutes! Today we specifically talked about stamina in our reading and writing and why it is important to build and grow our stamina. Just like athletes practicing their sports in order to get better and stronger, students need to practice reading, writing, focusing, etc.  We talked about when we are doing our Daily 5, we are adding a few minutes each time.  We are building our own Stamina!  We are going to be stronger readers and writers!! As the kids were working today, I told them I was going to look for those whom I could tell were really working on building their stamina. As I found those kids, they were rewarded with a stamina strip (just a little paper bracelet), as well as being rewarded with work done completely and growth of focus on reading and writing evident.
Here's a little poster we have hanging in the room! :)

Earning a Stamina Strip!

Building Stamina by reading to someone for a little longer!

Love the strong man building his stamina!

Now you can go back to building your own stamina! Thanks for stopping by!!
