Expository Writing and a Little Pigeon

Hello Everyone!!!
Thank you so much for all the sweet messages concerning our sweet little Lola.  You all are the best!
We all continue to grow stronger. Continued thoughts and prayers are appreciated!
In class we have been so busy writing expository text during workshop. We started our unit with writing about what we know best...ourselves. My little writers had so much fun brainstorming, organizing their thoughts, editing, rewriting, and finally publishing!

From there we went on to "How To..." writing. We started that off with  Oreo eating  fun. How do you eat your OREO? We brought these little ideas to publication as well.  Here are a few pics!

These little writers love sharing their work!!

Munch! Munch!!

Kids are experts at so many things!!!

Now on to some other First Grade Fun!  We are finishing up our measurement unit in math, and we are studying the work of Mo Willems, so I decided to integrate the two and have the kids create Pigeon and use him to practice nonstandard units of measurement. I did a kind of directed creating for the pigeon just giving the kids some sized construction paper and telling them what shapes needed to be cut from them. They all turned out so cute. Then they got busy measuring and writing results on speech bubbles!  I love how they turned out!!

Thanks for letting me share these!!!
Stay tunes for another peek through our "Window on Wonder!"

See you soon!
Joyfully!

How To Write A "How To!"

Hello Everyone!!
My apologies for not posting in a while.  We have been so busy both at school and on the homefront.  We had some major events to attend and my baby moved to Austin to start his first real job.  Needless to say...emotional rollercoaster!!! At school we celebrated the 100th day of school, Valentines Day, and Presidents Day. All were a huge success. Here are a couple of pics!

100th day balloon launch!!

Over the past couple of weeks we've been working so hard on our expository writing.  We are writing an "All About Me" book with about 5 chapters.  They are turning out so great!!  I don't have pics yet, bu I will soon. This coming week we will begin our "How to Writing." We have a kind of hat theme going on for our open house, so I wanted to include a hat idea in our writing, so I've added a "How to Make a Newspaper Hat" component.  I will show the kids how to make this fun little hat, and then let them get busy making their own and writing their "How To's."

The unit I'm sharing today include templates, brainstorming sheets, and publishing ideas for a generic "How To" plus some specific "How To's" including "How To Eat An Oreo," and "How to Make a Newspaper Hat."

For your own 40 page unit CLICK HERE! :)

I am so excited to show the kids how they can teach someone how to do something! I know they will love the hats!  I can't wait to show you some pics of them in the process. Till then, have a wonderfilled rest of the weekend!
As always, thanks for stopping by and taking a peek through our window of wonder!! Don't forget to leave a comment!!
Joyfully!

Little Authors!!

Hello Everyone!
In my last post I said I would share some writing lessons I've done with my little firsties, but first I want to share a fun little math game we did this past week to practice comparing and ordering numbers up to 120. We pulled out our infamous life-sized 120 board (made on a shower curtain).  I found some darling little wind up chicks at the Dollar Tree and we used them to select our numbers to compare.  We wound up the chicks and let them hop hop hop until they ran out of steam and landed on a number.  The larger chick helped us phrase our comparisons.  We love to talk math!!
___ is greater than ___because __ tens/ones
 is more than __ tens/ones.

We can compare 2, 3, 4 numbers!!!

I was so pleased with how the kids were able to have fun and understand how to compare using our math language!  Way to go, kiddos!!  Can you guess what we'll be doing next week?  More practice ...   but with bunnies, instead!! Yay Dollar Tree!!

Now, on to our writing.  We have been working hard on expository writing over the past few weeks.  We started off writing to teach.  We selected something that we were "experts" at (We are all experts at something!!!), and wrote all about it to teach our readers. Having a place to do all our planning is important to my young authors.

This past week we worked on writing to teach someone "how to" do something!...How to eat Oreo Cookies!  Everyone eats them differently.  We did this same writing last year and it was very successful, so I decided to try it again!!

Of course we had to practice eating an Oreo!! We wanted out steps fresh in our minds!! :)

Brainstorming words we would need
 for our "How To" writing

Publishing and celebrating!!

Both writing units come with mini reminder posters, brainstorming sheets, planning sheets, and mini book templates for publishing!  Hope you can use them!!

Now, off to celebrate another friend's marriage!! Love is certainly in the air!!
Hope you are enjoying your weekend!!
Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our wonderful world!!
You are the best!
Joyfully!
