Math Mints

Hello Everyone!!
Well, I can't believe I'm posting again this weekend, but we are iced in pretty good here and I'm beginning to get a little cabin fever.  We had an ice day (aka snowday) on Friday and we still couldn't get out today. Church has been canceled for tomorrow. That gives you an idea how bad it is.  I've baked, made 2 kinds of soup, cleaned, put up the rest of my Christmas décor, organized 2 closets, avoided some of the many files I have to attend to...and now I'm posting.  Feeling blessed!
I wanted to share this year's version of our math mints.  Last year when I posted about this activity, we were focused on fact families.  This year we were developing our doubles facts.
We learned a catchy little rap (inspired by Saxon) and as a whole group lesson, we worked on a giant mint work mat. I used two different colored starlight mints to show how to compose and indicate the part/part/whole of doubles facts.

Kids had recording sheets to help them see the patterns in our number sentences.
After our mini lesson, the kids has a chance to make their own math mint. This hands on visual connection was quick, easy, fun , and looks great hanging up.  It was also a good way to differentiate, as some kids challenged themselves with higher level doubles facts.

We just took two cheap white paper plates, colored them to look like a mint and wrote our facts. Glue the rims together so they become 3 dimensional, wrap them with clear cellophane and tied the ends. When we get back next week, kids will make a little book about doubles.

Hope you are all staying warm.  Till next time!
Have a great weekend!!
Joyfully!

Double Mint Math

Hello Everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful week. Mine was filled with cooking, cleaning, laughing, more cooking, some Christmas decorating, and more laughing!!  It has been great having company here all week!!  So thankful!
I finally had a minute to put together a little math lesson or two.  We will be working hard on different addition and subtraction strategies when we get back. Learning about doubles is a great strategy for kids to have in their repertoire. Knowing doubles and then doubles plus one or minus one gives them another edge with number sense, patterns, number relationships, etc.
Here's a fun way to cement those doubles facts!

Well, this was short and sweet, but more cooking and fun awaits!!! Have a great rest of the weekend!!
I'll be back soon with an updated "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies" unit!! :)
Joyfully!

Double Mints! Math Mints, that is!

Hello Everyone!
Remember those commercials? Double your pleasure. Double your fun? Double Mint Gum! ... Ugh!  I think I am giving away my age!  Oh well! :)
Today we worked hard on "Double Mints!"  We have been working some with doubles every day, but we wanted to get the kids really focused on this addition strategy and be able to use it for doubles + 1 as well.  I made a huge mint just out of butcher paper and brought in some starlight mints. The kids took turns showing a quantity of mints and deciding if it could be written as a doubles or a doubles + 1 number sentence. Then they got to make their own "math mints" out of paper plates and clear cellophane, writing some of the doubles facts on the mints!  Great job kids!
Using this along with our "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies" unit. That's why the mouse is pictured! :)

You can use this same idea and have kids write fact families, chunk words, sight words, etc. I've made these with kids the past gazillion years, and have had fun every time!  The kids thought they looked great hanging up above their desks!

That's it for tonight! Busy day tomorrow!
Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our wonder-filled world!
Joyfully!

If You Take A Mouse To The Movies week long unit!

Hello Everyone!
We are on break and I finally had time to put the finishing touches on my first winter unit.  If You Take a Mouse To The Movies, by Laura Numeroff is one of those special books that makes a great springboard for so many wonder-filled activities.  I managed to create some activities that correlate beautifully with the learning objectives we are covering when we get back from Thanksgiving break! In the unit you will find, activities on visualization, setting, sensory details, some word work, an ABC order activity, lots of math (problem solving, addition and subtraction practice, doubles, some math tub activities), and a fun science activity with heat and matter. Once I got creating, I couldn't stop!  The unit turned out to be 46 pages long.  I did make all but 3 of the pages in black and white.  I don't know about you, but the color printer ink is a touchy subject (sometimes) at our school. I know I have def. used my share and then some! No problem, though.  Black and white is fine! :) Here are a few samples of what is included.

Unit comes with craft connection patterns

a six page problem solving book for the kids to make is included in the unit!

Hope this helps get you started with the season!!  Have fun and let me know how it goes! I love receiving little notes!!  Have a wonderful week!
Joyfully!
