CRO Vandertrack

Our good friend Antonio Merinero (above, in the cap) painted this bike. Here are details on the build from Federico at CRO, Madrid. Photos by Luis Cevallos

CRO - Cafe Racer Obsession - is Madrid based little company in which I modify and create bikes in the street tracker and Cafe Racer style; the business is growing since I open in 2009, and right now i am working on 8 (!!) different projects, including a 1953 Triumph.
The latest release is a 125cc Suzuki Van Van, which I modified for a customer. The bike was trashed by previous owner, so it had lots of work to be done.
The rear subframe is new and the backbone has been modified to fit a Kawasaki KZ400 tank; the rear section, which is called " flat frog", is a fiberglass CRO creation, designed by artist Antonio Merinero, who took care of the graphics and the faded paint also. The CRO script doubles as a taillight, and all the details could be seen on the pictures.
Of course all the electricals and brackets have been removed or simplified.
The name of the bike came after some Margarita shots in my Thursday night CRO meeting, held weekly in a bar in Madrid downtown. Van comes obviously because the bike, Track about the style, and "der" is Dirt drunk spelled and related to the Dutch orange colour... Too much tequila, i guess.
Thanks for your interest,
 Best regards from Spain

Shaggy Dog/Monkey Story

So this is my (most recent) object of desire. Unearthed on the Japanese Daikoube blog with no decipherable info. So I sent out questionnaires to those in the know...
Ben Wilson revealed "Looks like Suzuki RV90/125 wheels, tyres, forks, swingarm & maybe frame with unknown Honda lump [me now thinks is an 1990s XR100] & Yamaha tank. You could use a TW125 as a donor instead."
Adrian Apart in Buenos-Aires was foxed and added this Yamaha BW200 bog bike to the debate:But then trumped with: "I just bought a new version of an RV yesterday. It's made by Mondial under license from Suzuki - its an exact replica of the 90 but with a 125 engine - they're bringing out a 250 version next summer. it's an Italian company based in Argentina, manufactured in China and assembled in Buenos Aires and probably going to be sent by me to the UK as i think it'd sell well there - do you ?
Small world here - Jezza and i have been hanging out a lot with Alejo Pichot - he's the Triumph guy you were in touch with.
Jezza choppin' me bars down (without adult supervision) for easier traffic work. xA"BP

Fat Tyre 2

From Richard in London, following on from the earlier post. It has a fat tyre front wheel conversion.

Here's my own set of fat tyres and yes, it aint much faster than a mtb.
Cheers, Rich

Animal Boat Fat Tyre

Animal Boat are a Japanese bike building shop with a great attitude. These are some of the original Van Vans they've morphed into something I could see The Banana Splits racing. We have a lovely feature on Animal Boat in Sideburn 7. G
UPDATE:
Is it just me or does Bingo (the gorilla) look like Dave Skooter Farm?
We've had good bafoonery milage out of our white over-alls and Japanese balaclavas - first worn at the Classic Mechanics Show; then followed by Milan and Verona, but we need a new(/olde) look, and this could just be it. Being the other goggle wearer I'd have to be Fleegle (the dog). Gary can be Drooper (the lion) and Mick Snorky (the elephant). BP

Rich's XS650 - UPDATED

From Rich

My street tracker needs a new rear tyre fairly soon and really want to get a pair of K180's for front & rear if possible to replace the TT100's.
Do I remember rightly a while back that you fitted a K180 VanVan front 18" onto the rear of one of your bikes. How did it work out in the end, any problems or was it ok.
If it went ok I was thinking of doing the same, if it'll fit between the swing arm on my XS650. I've got a spare front hub and would then get it built up onto an 18" rim and fit the vanvan K180 on the front as well, bingo! a set of new K180's.
Since the photo, I've just fitted some Hagon progressive fork springs and dropped the forks which has brought the front end down a bit and it feels great, much improved from the old knackered springs.
I couldn't get to the last Rye House meet, went to the one before and dragged along a couple of mates & we loved it, even thought about giving it ago until that poor bloke on an orange xs650 crashed near the end and broke his collar bone I think, respect. Hope to get to some this year.
All the best, Richard

You're right, but we haven't done a ton of miles on the FT (with its VanVan rear tyre) because it's been on show at different places. If you don't want kneedown potential I'd say it was fine, but I'm just a rider, not a tyre expert. If you're in doubt, you should check with tyre people. I'd fit one to an XS and not worry, but I'm not much of a worrier.
I also did a season racing on VanVan tyres and they held up remarkably well, so I'd say they're pretty hard. It's probably a much better idea that fit chewing gum soft Maxxis race tyres to 19s to run on the road. G

UPDATE:
Richard, I hear hear Gary's line and would go VanVan, but if you do decided to put tyre technology (or lastest tyre fashions?) before Le Look le plus cool...
The trusty all weathers Michelin Macadam 50 I used to run on my Zagato Guzzi, aren't made anymore. Andrew Gray recommended me against the very tacky (as in sticky not kitsch) classic racing Avon AM22 + AM23 as they dont make the street compound anymore and they're fakin expensive even if you buy them direct from the factory in Melksham (-on-Avon). There is not much shopping choice for wider than standard (not by modern bike standards) 18" rims. I did look at the Avon Road Rider but went for Bridgestone BT45 in the end; 110-80 front, 130-80 rear. But haven't ridden them in anger yet so I can't truly vouch for their capabilities (bizarrely the front tread depth is very shallow compared to the rear. I know they wear slower, but even so). BP

I dig Van Vans

So does 1 kick only.
You can use Van Van front 18in tyres as front and rears if you're after a Dunlop K180 look on the cheap (but don't blame us if it doesn't handle like a Fireblade). I raced on them for a while. Don't know if those tyres or my general fecklessness held me back. I don't think it was the tyres. GI

18" Street Tracker Tyres

We're often asked "What about 18" tyres for street trackers?" One solution is using two front tyres from a Suzuki VanVan. It sports Dunlop K180 which is a traditional chunky tread pattern. 130/80-18 front and a comedy 180/80-18 rear. This fat kid doesn't look like it's had much sideways action, but it's not a bad bike.
