Short Track in Giavera, Italy
The Italians really bring something to UK dirt track. Marco Belli is one of the hardest racers out there. He broke his collarbone the day before the last race decider, last October, and still did enough the next day to retain his title. It's about a 1600-mile round journey for every race the Italians compete in England.
Luca T is coming to race as many round as possible and Dario, on his homemade KTM, featured in issue 1, so he'll always have a place in our heart. I don't know who the girl on the supermoto is.
Marco and Luca will be at King's Lynn on Sunday. You should be there too.
Thanks to Jan-Willem for pointing us to these great Italian short track shots. There's a short track video of their practice here too.

News from Daytona
Joe Kopp joins the elite band of Grand Slam flat trackers having won the short track, to add to his mile, half-mile and TT wins, on night two of Daytona. It's amazing for a rider of his talent and longevity not to have won a short track National before now. It brings home how hard it must be.
Brandon Robinson (from SB1) made the main on both nights. And Henry Wiles won the first night on a Kawasaki. How long is it since a Kawasaki won a GNC race? Anyone?
Over the other side of town, friend of Sideburn Ben Bostrom won the Daytona 200. Woo and indeed hoo! Sideburn loves the Boz Bros.

The best email we'll ever get
It's amazing for us to think Sideburn got people motivated to start racing again. This email means a lot...
My brother and I started racing flattrack when we were teenagers. We grew up near Santa Cruz CA which is a coastal community south of San Francisco. We would make the trek on weekends to Lodi and nearby Central Valley tracks to race in the late 70's and early 80's. For us it was like going to another world. From the hippie California culture to middle America circa 1963 (with a dash of dust bowl Okie) in about two hours. I mean that with the greatest affection. There was such a racer's spirit and camaraderie there. We made life long friends with many of the people we met.
Your piece about Lodi and the vibe there was spot on. We were totally blown away that you guys in the UK could look at a bunch of old Lodi pics and just nail the Lodi/club racer flattrack experience on the head like that. I had not been there for years and your article actually spurred me to go back.
I have a modest collection of vintage flattrack bikes and will send a pic or two and a bit of info soon. Thanks again for creating your magazine.
Chris

© Dan Mahony
Back last century when men were men and photographers shot on film, Dan Mahony and his Nikon, clocked up tens of thousands of cross-country miles photographing flat trackers. Photos that today we consider classics - hence they appear in SIDEBURN.
One down side of the interweb, is the very rapid loss of authorship (as for usage rights and payment, you must be joking). And now that the ether is awash with blogs, some are even adding their own watermarks on photographs of unknown origin (SB does this too), so that at least they can be traced back at least part way to their source.
This photo of the very young Kenny Roberts is a prime case. Mat Oxley interviewed KR at his ranch for SB#2, & re-photographed KR's own original print - but we didn't realize it was one of Mahony's. - Sorry Dan! All props due.

SR500 race bike for sale
In the UK, built by our good mate Jason (he built the Triumph in SB 1).
He built it to race, took it to a practice and got so excited he's now spending a fortune on a race bike from the States.
So this tidy thing's gotta go. We've seen it up close and it's neat.
Here's what Jason says:
'SR500 recently flat tracked used just once, no crashes. New Mikuni carb, Dunlop KR180 race tyres, Supertrapp silencer, rewired and race ready. £1000. Bargain. Which works out at just a pound per giggle and you can't get better than that.'
The bike is in the English Midlands and will come with a front brake if you want to daylight MoT it. It's has a new chain (not pictured).

Sideburn Triumph modified
Jason’s Triumph (in Sideburn issue 1) has received love around the globe, so there might be a few people upset to find out he’s already reworked it. The original pipe has been replaced with a modified Italian Zard ‘I had to do 2 days welding just to get it on. Done now though,’ Jason tells us.
He’s also put a mouth organ badge on the tank and had it repainted.
