Yamaha Silver Cup, Long Beach, CA
Great old clip, posted by Superbike Planet, of early-1970s indoor short track on concrete. Nixon, Mashburn and Brelsford are all interviewed. The track looks like ice, definitely no Coke syrup down to make that more tacky. I'm pretty sure it's 1971, or late 1970. A bit of digging showed that Jim Odom won it (the rider from the Trophy Queen page of Sideburn 10).
As the presenter explains, the series also went to the famous Madison Square Gardens for the NY round in January 1971. A reported 17,000 turned up, on a Monday night!, the iconic venue sold out and spectators were turned away, according to an AMA report from the time. I wonder how many will go to the first US Superprestigio in Vegas on November 20-21? Two who will be there are Ben and me. Travis the poet too! Whose coming?
Click the 'Carpet Shoes' label below for more post about indoor concrete short track, or the 'indoors' label for more indoor short track in general.
Thanks to Roger for bringing it to our attention. G

What it's all about
Gary Nixon. On it. Photographer unknown. This is why people, even rank amateurs like us, start racing flat track. One day, sooner or later, you get one to sample one of these. For some it's in their first race, some, like me, have to wait a lot longer before years of road conditioning can be ignored.

Gary Nixon Auction
Don at Metro got in touch to say the widow of Gary Nixon has appointed an auctioneer, a friend of the family, to sell a bunch of the former #1's memorabilia, riding kit and bikes. the sale is set for June 16 in York, PA. It's a shame this stuff didn't go in eBay. I'm sure it would've fetched a lot. I'd have loved to bid on some of this.

A Young Bad Ass UPDATED
Dan B in Washington state sent this fantastic photo in...
GARY NIXON late-sixties, a young bad ass pushing his own bike with his tools. Hard tail frame total loss ignition and the ama number one plate when you had to road race and flat track to win number one.

Things I love about this photo
The huge bubble on Gary Nixon's Kawasaki.
The cigarette in Gary's oily fingers.Miss New Hampshire's incredible Vivienne Westwood-esque tweed, plus Kawasaki green rollneck combo.
The tear-offs left on the helmet, pointing to the likelihood Nixon led most of the race.
Nixon's Bell helmet.
The disembodied hand handing over the bubbly.
The fella on the right's wonderful mix of pork pie hat, wraparounds and pink shirt with fierce collars.
Those trophies.
The fact three of the four people in shot are redheads.
The flowery wreath.
The glimpse of the Triumph tank.
The strange look on Gary's face. What is he thinking of? G
Photo found at Speed Junkies, but don't know where he found it.

Gary Nixon Tribute 1
On August 21, 2011, Don and Peg Miller hope to see the entire AMA Pro Racing Flat track field in Gary Nixon Enterprises jerseys to pay tribute to the great Gary Nixon who passed away on August 5th. Don and Peg have been supplying Gary with his trademark red, white and blue logo emblazoned on a wide variety of items for close to 20 years. They are truly saddened by the passing of not only a great racer, but a very close personal friend. So to honor Gary Nixon, they are offering to supply a free Nixon jersey to all of the racers participating in the Peoria TT. Through the approval of AMA Pro Racing, all jerseys will have the required AMA Pro Racing and Harley Davidson Insurance logos along with the riders name and number on the back. All jerseys will be shipped to racing legend and close friend of Nixon's, Jay Springsteen, and can be picked up at his pit area in Peoria.
Look back in the history books, you will find out more information on Gary Nixon than one could only imagine. There is a reason for that. Gary Nixon truly was one of the greatest motorcycle racers that ever lived. He was as big as it could get on and off the track. Through his endeavors, Gary Nixon Enterprises rose up and became a staple in the motorcycle industry. Along with the business came a logo that would become highly recognized through the racing world. The "Nixon Flag" was worn by most everyone that was into the sport at one time or another. It even became world famous when Barry Sheene stated that he wouldn't race without one on. Through the years, Gary's love for racing would not let him be away from the track no matter what his position: racer, friend, advisor or team owner. it didn't matter, the track was where he had to be.
Seeing a field of Nixon jerseys at the Peoria TT would show the world how much the flat track community cares about their heritage.

Gary Nixon RIP
Two-time AMA Grand National Champion Gary Nixon died today at a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The man simply known as 'Nixon' was 70 years old.
Nixon took ill while spectating at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca and was admitted to hospital after returning to his home in Maryland. He suffered a heart attack on July 29 and died from complications from that heart attack. He had been in ICU at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Baltimore after undergoing surgery to place two stents in his arteries.

Beezumph snaps 2)
Gary didn't ride due to the impact of advancing years upon his old injuries. However, he aided Don Emde to give a fascinating talk, illustrated by some great period photos, about the Trident / Rocket triples raced on the dirt (I'll try and persuade him to contribute the material to a Sideburn article).

Nickers
From Don at Metro Racing
Hey Gary,
Here's a shot from last week's shoot. It's The lovely Cindy with the '67-'68 Grand National Champ, Gary Nixon. The bike is his championship winning Triumph "Twud" The #1 plate in the back ground is the steel boiler plate that Markle gave to Nixon when he won the first championship. The plate, Nixon's last dirt track leathers (He has the jacket on) and the helmet are all part of Metro's collection of historic flat track goodies.
Later, Don

The Pro Singles podium
Remember proud Uncle John? Well he sent these shots and a very personal report from the recent Hagerstown half-mile AMA GNC round. His nephews race in the support class. In the twins class, Jake Johnson, Sammy Halbert and Kenny Coolbeth were 1, 2, 3. Mees, 4th and Carr sixth. I mention those two because Mees is on the cover of SB3 and we love CC, but it does seem weird to not mention 5th, so that was Matt Weidman. Anyway, Uncle John wrote...
Attached are photos taken, in between rain, at the AMA event at Hagerstown Maryland, 7/25/09.
The Canadian contingent was well represented in the Pro Singles class with Mike Labelle of Labelle Racing out of Welland ON. taking third in the main.
Nigel Heggarty of Team Tenacious raced from the last row in the Pro Singles main after a high side in his heat race to take a 9th, earning him the "hard charger" award. The question everyone wanted answered in the pits was, where did these Canadians
learn to ride on clay?
Check out the photo of Jammin Jared Mees bikes and you might see Gary Nixon in the
background.
Cheers, Uncle John.
