UNITED STATES 'PATENT' OFFICE.
.IOSIAII THOMPSON, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POCKET-BOOK OR WALLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,302, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed March 20, 1895. Serial No. 542,493. (No model.)
To all whom, it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Books or Wallets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved pocket-book or wallet, illustrating the use of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view of the pocket-book, showing the adjustable safety-strap. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the pocket-book or wallet on line :n a: in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view on line y y, and Fig. 5 is an edge view.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates more particularly to ladies pocket-books, which are usually carried in the hand and are therefore liable to be lost or mislaid while the owner is shopping or likely to be snatched out of the hand of the person carrying it.
To this end my improvement consists in providing the pocket-book or wallet with an adjustable double safety-loop, through which two of the fingers may be inserted, and which is so arranged that it will adjust itself to iit over the fingers inserted through it, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, the reference-lettersA B denote the two sides 0r covers of a pocket-book, card-case, or wallet, as the case may be, to which my im rovement has been applied. Upon one of t ese sides (the cover marked A on the drawings) is fastened a flexible side strap or band O, made of leather or other suitable strong material, the two ends of which are inserted through slots d and e in esoutcheon-plates D and E, which are riveted or otherwise securely fastened upon the coverAon the outside. This flexible band O,which is left loose or with considerable slack between its terminals d and e, is passed unl der a keeper F, midway between the two slotted end plates or escutcheon-plates, in the nature of a' flat, oblong, or rectangular metal plate, which may also very conveniently and appropriately serve the purpose of a nameplate.' By means of this keeper or plate F the middle part of the strap O is kept down close against the cover-of the pocket-book, and by sliding the slack part of the strap in either direction the size of the two inger-loops fand f may be varied at will within certain limits, the enlargement of one of these finger-loops being due to the reduction in size of the other.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the manner of using thisl duplex safety-loop attachment will readily be understood.
Two of the middle ingers of the hand carrying the pocket-book are slipped through the adjustable loops f and f', which will readily adjust themselves to lit upon the fingers, the outer ends of which are bent around the back of the pocket-book, so as to grasp vthe same firmly. By bending slightly either one of the two ngers insertedthrough the loops f and f the loop' around the adjacent nger will be drawn down tightly against this, so as to press it down against the cover and form a fastening or tie, so to speak, which will make it almost impossible, even by an expert pocket-book snatcher, to snatch the pocketbook out of the hand of the person carrying it. The adjustability as to size of the duplex loop also enable these to adjust themselves to ngers that are gloved or ornamented with rings, as usual when ladies go shoppingf so that these articles need not. be removed or adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a` pocket-book or wallet, of a pair of escutcheon-plates, D, E, secured upon one of the sides or covers thereof and provided with transverse slots d` and e; the middle-plate or keeper4 F secured at both ends to the cover centrally between the end-plates or escutcheon-plates, leaving an opening between the middle of the plate and the cover to which it is affixed; and the flexible band or strap O having its ends inserted through and fastened securely in the slots d and c of the pair of escutcheon-plates, and in- IOO y (No Modell.)
