e it known that I, SAMUEL BUCHSBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at hicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clasps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

Iy invention relates to clamps or buckles and has to do more particularly with that type of buckle which is adapted to be adjusted along the band to vary the length thereof. That is, to that type in which the buckle is moved along the band or belt to lengthen or shorten it as desired.

It is one of the objects of the invention to produce a simple and effective device of this character which will permit one end of the band to be held with relation to the buckle, yet permitting the buckle to be moved with respect to another portion of the band and to grasp the same to prevent its being moved relative thereto when in adjusted position. The arrangement eliminates the necessity of sewing or otherwise similarly fastening the end of the band to the buckle and yetsuliiciently secures the same so that when the buckle is moved along the band, the end thereof will bemoved with the buckle and consequently cause the length of the band to be varied.

The invention has many applications, and is herein shown as applied to a band for wrist watches and will be explained in this connection, but it is evidentthat same may be applied in other connections.

Thus it can be seen that when the clamping member 11 is released, the device as a whole may be moved along the band 13 to either increase or shorten the length of the band extending between the eyelets of the watch, and also that when the clamping element 11 is again caused to clamp the band that the desired length of the band may be maintained.

From the foregoing it can readily be seen that the device produces a simple and effec- Y tending `substantially tive arrangement whereby the length of the band may be varied, also that a compact device results in which the possibility of accidentally releasing the band is extremely unlikely.

Having thus described one embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that changes and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the appended claims.

l. In a clamping device the combination of a base plate, a pair of suitably mounted oppositely extending similar clamping elements, each or said clamping elements having a gripping edge and a clamping lever, the lever of one clamping element extending toward and overlapping the lever of the other clamping element, said overlapping levers extending substantially parallel to each other and one of said levers clamping the other lever between the same and Vsaid base plate to hold said second lever in clamping position.

2. In a clamping device the combination of a base plate having right angularly extending side ilanges, a pair of clamping elements pivotally mounted between said side flanges, said clamping elements being substantial duplicates, each of said clamping elements comprising a gripping portion and a clamping lever, said clamping elements being reversely arranged so that said clamping levers extend toward each other in overlapping relation when in clamping position, the overlapping portions of said levers exparallel to each other whereby the upper of said levers will clamp the lower of said levers between the same and said base plate to hold said lower lever in clamping position.

The combination with a band or flexible material of a. base plate having right angularly extending sideA flanges, a pair of clamping elements pivotally mounted between said side flanges, said clamping elements being substantial duplicates, each of said clamping elements comprising a gripping portion and a clamping lever, said clamping elements being reversely arranged so that said clamping levers extend toward each other in overlapping substantially parallel relation when in clamping position, one of said clamping elements being adapted to grip an end portion of said band between the gripping portion thereof and said base plate and the other of said elements being adapted to grip an intermediate portion of said band without looping said band about any portion of said clamping device, said band extending between said clamping levers, said levers overlappingso as to clamp said band therebetween and the lower lever against saidbase platerto hold said lower lever in clampin position.`
