Summary
When Daniil Dankovsky arrives in a lonely town in the west of Ireland, he quickly becomes entangled in the affairs of both the Peerage and the peasantry. As he fights to carry out his research into the lengthy lifespans of the local people, he comes to uncover sinister plots that could affect far more than just the people of the town. What exactly occurs in that Workhouse out the road? What is the strange disease that people call the Hunger? And how much longer will it take before the powers of the Crown set eyes on this little town?
Artemy Burakh has not had it easy in recent years. His father was ritually sacrificed before the masses, his people have been enslaved in all but name, and the bogland he calls home is being drained every day by foreign machinery. When he meets Daniil Dankovsky, he sees only another challenge to add to all the rest.
But as their paths throw them together again and again, they reluctantly come to see that their goals may align far more than they had previously thought possible.

After the epidemic at the Town-On-Ghorkon, General Block was called under investigation over his dubious victory over the Sand Pest. The Capital is fed up with the general getting another feather in his cap and wants to remove his influence. Artemy Burakh offers a different form of punishment. Instead of ending his life, Burakh suggests Block serve his life to one of the people he has wronged.
Perhaps Lara and Alexander Block would find a way to live again.
