Central Focus The students will learn to write a short story about a pumpkin character
and read the story aloud to be videoed.
Learning Targets I can write a short story about a character I made up.
I can read a story with fluid reading and can be understood.
I can read with emphasis and enhancing.

 Language Supports: I will tell the students that we are going to


create a pumpkin character. This character can be anything that
they want it to be. Just to make sure that they can write a short
story about this character. I will give them 5 minutes of silent
thinking to think about what they want their character to be and
to write about before letting them start with the creation of the
character.

Prior Knowledge The students should know how the writing process works. They should
be able to create a pumpkin character in their head before beginning to
work.
Assessment This assessment will be a formative assessment. I will use the rubric at
the end of this lesson to evaluate the students.

Technology Chromebook to video record, Interactive TV, Chromebooks for students


to type on
Introduction to I will get out the pumpkin I have already made and show it to the
Lesson students. I will read the story that I have written about my pumpkin
character. I will tell the students that they are going to write a
pumpkin story about a character they make up and create. THERE
WILL BE NO INNAPPROPRIATE STORIES. NO BLOOD AND GORE. NO
VIOLENCE!!! I will place the pumpkins on the center table and allow
the students to go pick one out. I will have all the craft supplies on the
back table for them to pick put and create. I will play soft
Halloween/fall music in the background to create the atmosphere.

Teaching Procedures After the class is finished completing their pumpkin character I will have
them clean up and move back to their seats for quiet writing time. The
room will be quiet for 30 minutes for the students to write their story on
chrome books/google docs. They will share with me through google
docs and I will edit them and send it back to them to revise and publish.
These are SHORT stories so it should not take long for me to edit and
send back to them.
Modifications or I will work one on one with students who need individual help while the
Accommodations for other students are working silently on their stories. I will give students
students’ individual who need it extended time. I will repeat the instructions as need to the
needs students.
Summary & Closure I will tell the students that writing time is over to please listen while
they put away their Chromebooks. If they are not finished I will assure
them that they will get a chance to finish their writing. While they are
cleaning up their chrome books I will tell them that they are going to
get to read their short stories to the class and while they are reading
them aloud and showing off their creations I am going to video them on
the Chromebook and play it on the interactive tv when their parents
come to family night!!!
LESSON CONTINUED I will continue the lesson to the next day to record the students reading
TOMORROW FOR their stories aloud. I will be sure to allow ALL students time to finish
RECORDING!! their writing throughout the day and the next day until time to read
them aloud to the class. After videoing the students I will put them all
into a PowerPoint to play for the parents during family night!!!
