Anthropophagy in Medieval Sicily: a cultural theme between chronicle and representation. Anthropophagy is the consumption of human flesh and the most extreme form of destruction of the human body, a physical violence which is the quintessential taboo of the self-described “civilized” societies. It provokes disgust, surprise and sometimes fascination, creating a deep connection between the text and the reader, and between the message and the audience. With regard to Sicily, anthropophagy is a cultural theme useful to discern between the account of real events and their representation. The construction of the image of Sicily, and even more of its inhabitants, the Sicilians, is based on an accumulation of clichés, often of ancient origins, transmitted and interpreted over the ages. One of them is surely the “bestiality” of its first inhabitants, intended as the ancient Cyclops or the Giants sons of Saturn, both of them “tyrants” described as man-eaters. During the Early Middle Ages the idea that the Sicilians eat human flesh was transferred to the new conquerors of the island: the Muslims, an infidel enemy to be fighted and considered beyond the boundaries of humanity and nature, meant as a divine law and therefore “civilization”. In both cases the accusations came from the outside, i.e. from groups as the ancient Greeks or the Christians (both Byzantine and Latin-Norman) who had an interest in representing the old and modern inhabitants of the island as anthropophagists to be feared, conquered, subjugated and converted to religion and/or civilization.

The correspondence between King Roger II and Bernard of Clairvaux reveals that in 1140 ca. Cistercians moved to the Norman Kingdom with Elisabeth of Champagne, when she married the Duke Roger. Here, they established their first settlement, whose location is still not widely agreed on by scholars.
Saint George’s Abbey, now a ruin, was erected in Sicily by the Duke at about the same time, and it has been traditionally considered as a Norbertine building.
A new research, conducted through both stylistic analysis of the building and critical reading of the documents, reveals Cistercian features of the abbey and proposes a hypothesis that St. George’s Abbey would actually be the first Cistercian settlement in the Kingdom of Sicily. This sheds new light on the Cistercians in Sicily, and merits further analysis on the subject within the entire Kingdom.

The article focuses on material related to the origins of the monastery of
S. Maria di Picciano, located on the Materan plain and documented from 1219. An analysis of an action taken in May 1220 by Honorius III in favour of the monastic community makes it possible to establish that the monastery existed from the twelfth century, and, more importantly, relates the foundation of the monastery to the Altavilla family. From the papal text it is clear that Guglielmo III, the second son of Tancredi and the last Altavilla king of Sicily, had maintained ties especially with this monastery, to which he had made notable donations linked to the choice of the Materan monastery as his burial place, replacing the monastery of SS. Niccolò e Cataldo in Lecce, founded as the Altavilla royal sepulchre by his father Tancredi. This information, almost entirely isolated, makes it possible both to fill out the story of the fate of the last Altavilla monarch and to reinforce the overall picture of the relationship, betterknown and better-documented in the realm of the arts in the thirteenth century, between the area of Matera and that of Lecce.

Whilst historians often regard the Norman Kingdom of Sicily as centralised and administratively advanced, County and Nobility in Norman Italy counters this traditional interpretation; far from centralised and streamlined, this book reveals how the genesis and social structures of the kingdom were constantly fraught between the forces of royal power and a re-invented local aristocracy. The result of thorough research conducted on the vast source material for the history of this fascinating twelfth-century world, this book sheds important new light on medieval Italy.

Analizzando la tradizione storiografica su Ruggero II si mette in evidenza come la politica di proiezione mediterranea di Ruggero II, in particolare verso l'Africa, sia un elemento rilevante della politica del sovrano normanno ma solitamente poco considerato quando non trascurato del tutto.

Guardare a San Giuseppe Jato e alla storia della valle dello Jato significa necessariamente dover porre come parametri base della propria ricerca il millenario
scorrere del fiume Jato e l’altrettanto millenaria presenza del monte Jato che insiste sull’omonima valle: la montagna e il fiume, silenziosi testimoni di popoli in cammino e di generazioni di uomini che si sono susseguiti in cerca di un luogo in cui vivere. [...] guardare al Castellum Jati significa, infatti, dover guardare alla storia normanna di Monreale e, insieme, all’estensione e alla potenza dell’arcidiocesi e della chiesa di Santa Maria la Nuova, definita dal Townsend White «il più grande tra tutti i monasteri normanni di Sicilia».

Ne emerge il profilo di un sagace condottiero e grande stratega, ma soprattutto di un accorto diplomatico e di un monarca dai molteplici interessi culturali, le cui realizzazioni politiche, am-biziose ma coerenti, fanno intravedere incompiute aspirazioni imperiali mediterranee centrate sulla Sicilia. Il nuovo regno raggiunse comunque una tale potenza e fioritura artistica e culturale da suscitare o l'ammirazione sconsiderata o l'odio implacabile dei contemporanei. L'impegnativa eredità di Ruggero II sarebbe poi stata parzialmente raccolta e rielaborata da un'altra figura d'eccezione, il celebre nipote Federico II di Svevia.

Conca d’oro è il nome della fertile piana, compresa tra mare e monti, che circonda la città di Palermo per una estensione di ca. 100 km2, celebrata per la sua feracità sin dalla antichità classica. Il presente studio intende delineare la storia del toponimo, indagando le implicazioni linguistiche e culturali ad esso connesse. Attestato come Co(n)ca  aurea nella temperie di rinnovamento culturale che investe la città di Palermo intorno al 1470, il toponimo potrebbe celare una formazione paraetimologica ibrida arabo-latina, in analogia ad altri casi siciliani già noti (es. Mongibello).

Ekphrasis and the associated concept of energeia is Philagathos’ chief rhetorical strategy for promoting the emotional involvement of the faithful in the biblical event. By exciting a similar zeal in the listener’s mind through vivid discourse, biblical occurrences become ‘history’ in the proper (Christian) sense in so far as they actualize the redemptive movement of creation towards eschatological fulfilment. Pre-eminently, Philagathos’ ekphrastic elaborations bring to light the refinement and the extent of his learning. The array of rhetorical models which inform these compositions is dazzling, precluding a clear distinction between Classical and Christian terminology of emotions. The distinct Christian perspective is embedded in the interplay between ekphrasis, iconic doctrine, and Christian anthropology which takes the emotions as prerequisite for deification.

Partendo da una notizia riportata da Boncompagno sulla vicenda dell'arcivescovo Nicola di Salerno, figlio del vicecancelliere di Guglielmo II e poi cancelliere di re Tancredi Matteo da Salerno, e lui stesso ultimo responsabile della cancelleria di Palermo prima della conquista di Enrico VI, si analizzano i dirigenti e le competenze della cancelleria, in particolar modo il suo ruolo nell'amministrazione della giustizia.

Abstract (ITA):
Il volume raccoglie la memoria di testi ed immagini di un fantastico evento che si è realizzato a Monreale tra il 12 ed il 19 settembre del2010, con un grandissimo coinvolgimento di istituzioni, persone, enti, associazioni, soggetti pubblici e privati, sul tema, per la sua primaedizione, Nel segno di Gugliemo: novellare normanno.
Questo novellare normanno ci ha regalato lezioni e conferenze, qui oggi messe assieme ed offerte al grande pubblico, recitazioni teatrali di cui pubblichiamo i testi fino ad oggi inediti, spettacolari scenografie di un suggestivo “Corteo storico normanno” descritte e commentate in dettaglio nel volume, una ricchissima documentazione fotografica che testimonia di una Monreale in festa che, tra musiche, spettacoli, momenti d'arte, odori e sapori d'antiche tradizioni, rinovella con la sua comunità la storia secolare che la riguarda e che rivive, ogni giorno, attorno alla Cattedrale voluta dal re normanno Guglielmo II in onore di Maria Vergine Madre di Cristo.
Tra realtà e sacrale magia, tra rievocazione e sogno, queste pagine sono piene di amore e passione per un passato che è vivo e presente. Attraverso parole, danze, spettacoli, invenzioni e rievocazioni, che ancora si replicano nella seconda edizione sul nuovo tema di quest'anno Nel segno di Guglielmo: la tolleranza, questo volume propone al lettore, che ancora ama stupirsi e che si fa persuadere dalla meraviglia, di rivivere pezzi di storia che sono ancora stracolmi di una infinita, meravigliosa attualità!

Les mosaïques des parois du vaisseau central de la cathédrale de Monreale sont subdivisées en quarante-deux scènes, dédiées à la Genèse. Cet article mette en relation directe ces mosaïques avec ceux de la Chapelle Palatine de Palerme, qu’ils sont antérieurs et doivent être considérées comme les précurseurs de l’imitation des modèles romains à la fois pour les concordances iconographiques, la mise en scène et les inscriptions. Le choix des scènes entre les mosaïques de Palerme et de Monreale est quasiment identique. Les deux cycles siciliens de l’Ancient Testament sont profondément liés entre eux, mais en même temps sensiblement différents, car ils sont au moins séparés par un quart de siècle. Une comparaison entre certaines scènes pareilles des deux cycles permet de comprendre les similitudes et les différences. À Monreale, les artistes n’ont pas profité d’une extension plus vaste pour élargir les épisodes : ils ont dilaté la narration, ajouté de personnages et assigné à chaque scène un seul espace. Certaines libertés dans l’interprétation des thèmes peuvent être attribuées à l’initiative des artistes, ce qui montrerait une grande créativité dans l’utilisation des sources iconographiques et des formules, pour uniformiser la narration. La Genèse de Monreale est donc le résultat de la fusion de traditions iconographiques diverses et, si toutefois il y a des divergences avec le système romain, à l’inverse des similitudes avec d’autres cycles occidentaux conduisent à la comparaison avec des épisodes de la Genèse peinte dans la voûte de la nef centrale de l’abbatiale de Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. Pour conclure on montrera comme le cycle de Monreale exalte la syntaxe architecturale de l’édifice et des expédients constituent une véritable liaison entre les scènes, pour la perception visuelle de la continuité narrative et sémantique du cycle.

L'articolo presenta l'edizione e l'analisi di cinque pergamene latine provenienti dagli archivi di due monasteri greci della Sicilia. Tre appartengono al fondo di S. Maria della Grotta recentemente scoperto nella Biblioteca Liciniana di Termini Imerese: due di esse trattano la concessione di terreni per  viticultura nel territorio di Marsala nel 1197 da parte dell'abate Barlaam, mentre la terza, emessa nel 1226 dall'abate Nilo, è relativa alla locazione di una casa a Messina, eredità di Barlaam, al canonico di Monreale e futuro vescovo di Patti Gregorius Mustacia. Dall'archivio di San Salvatore di Messina provengono l'atto di donazione al monastero  del  casale  Callura da parte del vicecancelliere  Matteo nel 1177/1178 e un privilegio originale di Corrado IV del 1254 in cui il re conferma ad un cittadino di Messina, Iacobus de Natali, la locazione di terreni in contrada Fari, fatta da due funzionari ad utilitatem curie.

Il saggio intende fornire alcuni spunti di riflessione sulla politica mediterranea di Ruggero II sulla scorta della letteratura scientifica recente e ricorrendo a fonti di diversa tipologia, al fine di individuare il raggio di opzioni in cui nella prima metà del secolo XII operò la corte normanna di Palermo e le scelte da essa operate secondo un’agenda politica flessibile.
Alla luce degli eventi appare chiaro che Ruggero II (dal 1130 insegnito del titolo regio) indirizzò maggiori attenzioni verso le coste nordafricane relegando in secondo piano i legami con l'Oriente latino verso cui pure inizialmente si era rivolto cercando di ottenere la corona del regno di Gerusalemme siglando un accordo matrimoniale con re Baldovino I che sposò la madre del normanno. Un progetto il cui fallimento determinò un riorientamento degli obiettivi politici della corte normanna in direzione dei dirimpettai musulmani.

The ruling class and the nobility had undoubtedly changed in almost a century since the Normans settled in the south; but despite the existence of new formal polities, the territory that would later form the kingdom of Sicily was still submerged in a quarrelling polyarchy in 1127. In the words of the royal apologist Alexander of Telese, ‘just as the great wickedness of the Lombards was formerly overcome by the violence of the Normans when they arrived, in the same way now it is certain that it was either given or permitted to Roger by Heaven to coerce the immense malice of these lands by his sword.’ It is in this complex political reality that the first step towards the counts’ new organisation took place. But, how did the counties in the middle of the twelfth century differ from the lordships held by the counts when the kingdom was founded? To what extent did the new monarchy employ the creation of counts and counties for either restructuring the organisation of the mainland or rewarding loyal territorial leaders? These are ambitious questions, and in the space available here I can at best offer a sketch, rather than a finished picture. One principal aspect of these questions is nevertheless considered: the changes to the comital class during King Roger’s new monarchy.

This is a methodological proposal: exploiting network analysis for approaching a medieval historical narrative. My starting
hypothesis is that a relational approach can contribute to the understanding of written sources and their authors' social and
political stand. The first problem to address is attempting to define the meaning of narrative, and its structural features. After that, I shall identify a complex system of social interactions within the narrative structure. Then, the historical interaction system will be proposed to be represented as a narrative network of actors. The central idea of this approach
is that the meaning of individuals and communities in a narrative is conditional on their position in a network of social
relationships constructed by the author. Hence, a central problem when dealing with historical sources is framing and
organising the author's perspective of personal and collective connections in order to understand better the role of both
the witness (viz. the persona that emerges from the historical narrative) and its testimony as reflected by the text. I will
illustrate this proposed method with respect to a single narrative case: pseudo-Falcandus' account on the Sicilian royal
court. This historia became a fundamental text for the understanding of the Norman kingdom of Sicily in the second half
of the twelfth century. The encounters, agreements, bargaining, gossiping, manoeuvring, and plotting described by the
author offer us a complex interaction system of a medieval court society, and by using the proposed method I attempt to
reconstruct and analyse such a system.
