Medieval Latin Literature

„Tu deinen Mund auf und iss, was ich dir geben werde.“ Der Adressat dieser Anweisung ist der alttestamentliche Prophet Ezechiel, der von Gott angehalten wird, eine Schriftrolle zu essen, ihren Inhalt sich einzuverleiben und die sich auf diese Weise angeeigneten Worte Gottes zu verkünden (vgl. Ez 2,8ff.). In jenen Texten des Mittelalters, die unter der literaturhistoriographischen Ordnungskategorie ‚mystische Literatur‘ subsumiert werden, steht das Geschriebene meistens nicht am Beginn des Offenbarungsprozesses, sondern ist sein Produkt. Bemerkenswerterweise stellt die Schriftwerdung des Offenbarten in den Texten ein Thema für sich dar. Anders gesagt: Die Texte reflektieren die Bedingungen ihrer Entstehung; sie legen Wert darauf, den Leser in die Umstände ihrer Genese einzuweihen.
Dies gilt auch für die Helftaer Offenbarungsliteratur, deren textintern präsentierte Buchentstehungsgeschichten die deutliche Signatur von Schwester N, einer namentlich nicht bekannten Konventualin, tragen, von deren schriftstellerisch-kompilierender Hand auch die vor Kurzem entdeckte Sonderedition des Legatus divinae pietatis in der Leipziger Handschrift Ms 827 zeugt. Für gewöhnlich werden die im Helftaer Schrifttum gemachten Aussagen über die Entstehungsumstände der einzelnen Werke als kulturgeschichtlich verwertbare Fakten referiert, die über tatsächliche Schreibprozesse informieren. Doch zeigt der Prolog der Sonderausgabe des Legatus, wie Autorschaft modelliert und Schreibszenarien kreiert werden können, was die Frage nach dem Referenzwert vieler faktisch anmutender Details rund um die Buchgenesen, aber auch in Bezug auf die Figurationen von Autorschaft aufwirft.
Ohne diese Implikationen des Themas aus den Augen zu verlieren, widme ich mich in meinem Vortrag den Produkten der um 1300 tätigen Literaturwerkstatt von Helfta. Einleitend werde ich Spuren literarischer Interessenbildung bei jenen Grafenhäusern nachgehen, aus deren Reihen sich die Gründer des Vorgängerkonvents von Helfta rekrutieren. Der Blick auf die Anfänge von Helfta ist insofern aufschlussreich, als die Akteure, mit deren Namen der Literaturbetrieb um 1300 verbunden ist, Nachfahren der Förderer von Helfta bzw. der Stifter des Vorgängerkonvents waren. Diese Akteure haben in verschiedenen Funktionen zur Entstehung eines Textcorpus beigetragen, das nach einhelliger Meinung der Forschung nicht nur Werke mit Offenbarungscharakter, sondern auch solche umfasst, die aus seelsorgerischem Anliegen heraus verfasst wurden. Welche Werke mit Helfta tatsächlich in Verbindung stehen und welche wohl nicht, möchte ich im Einzelnen erläutern. Dabei gilt es, sowohl den Inhalt der neu aufgefundenen Leipziger Handschrift Ms 827 zu berücksichtigen, als auch die Argumente auf den Prüfstand zu stellen, die die Forschung veranlasst haben, das Fließende Licht und die Exercitia spiritualia dem Helftaer Literaturbetrieb um 1300 zuzuschlagen.

Monumenti e immagini non ci parlano da soli. La comprensione delle opere d'arte di epoche lontane richiede la co-noscenza dei presupposti culturali che le hanno motivate, trasformandole in un valore sociale. Questi elementi si possono acquisire, per l'arte medieva-le, attraverso i testi narrativi, poetici e teologici che li trasmettono, oltre che nelle testimonianze di artigiani, artisti e architetti. This article presents a manuscript that significantly enriches the textual corpus of ›Helfta Mysticism‹ with a series of hitherto unknown writings. Aside from this, it contains what is by some distance the oldest copy of the ›Legatus divinae pietatis‹, in the form of a ›special edition‹ that consists of excerpts from the known text as well as new material. This is preceded by a prologue and a florilegium which is marked in an epilogue as Gertrude’s own work. We argue that the epilogue of the florilegium, the prologue and the ›special edition‹ itself were probably composed by ›Sister N‹ of Helfta herself. The article provides a full description of the manuscript (Ms 827), a breakdown of the new ›special edition‹ of the ›Legatus‹-text, and an edition, translation, and close reading of the prologue.

Im Folgenden soll eine Handschrift vorgestellt werden, die die Textbasis der Helftaer Mystik mit einer Reihe von bislang unbekannten Schriften bereichert. Außerdem enthält sie die mit Abstand älteste Abschrift des ›Legatus divinae pietatis‹ in Form einer ›Sonderausgabe‹, die aus Exzerpten aus dem bekannten Textcorpus und aus weiterem bislang nicht bekanntem Material besteht. Dieser geht eine Vorrede und ein im Epilog als Gertruds Werk ausgewiesenes Florilegium voraus, Texte, die wie die ›Sonderausgabe‹ selbst von Schwester N von Helfta stammen dürften. Die vorliegende Studie bietet eine Beschreibung von Ms 827, die Aufschlüsselung der ›Sonderausgabe‹ des ›Legatus‹ sowie Abdruck, Übersetzung und inhaltliche Analyse der Vorrede.

BISLAM. Bibliotheca Scriptorum Latinorum Medii Recentiorisque Aevi. II Censimento onomastico e letterario degli autori latini del medioevo. Identificazione, classificazione per genere letterario e bibliografia fondamentale è un repertorio onomastico, biografico, bibliografico e storico-letterario della letteratura mediolatina. Il volume offre agli studiosi e ai catalogatori un ausilio alla risoluzione dei problemi di identificazione degli autori attivi tra la fine del V e l’inizio del XVI secolo, fornendo sintetiche notizie biografiche, un elenco delle varianti dei loro nomi in latino e nelle lingue moderne, nonché un primo orientamento bibliografico, con l'indicazione dei principali generi letterari delle loro opere. Gli strumenti di ricerca dei quali è dotato il cd-rom che correda l’opera permettono un rapido reperimento delle informazioni contenute nel volume, consentendo anche di incrociare numerosi parametri onomastici, biografici, cronologici e storico-letterari. Con questa nuova edizione della Bibliotheca Scriptorum Latinorum Medii Recentiorisque Aevi, la Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino porta a compimento la pubblicazione dei risultati di dodici anni di ricerca che hanno prodotto il catalogo bio-bibliografico, onomastico e letterario degli autori latini del medioevo. Essa comprende 13.174 voci su altrettanti autori e 83.124 varianti dei loro nomi. Mentre la prima edizione, pubblicata nel 2003, censiva circa 5.300 autori e 12.500 varianti nominali, questa edizione, che comprende la prima al suo interno, va ampiamente oltre, non soltanto per il numero di autori trattati, ma per la quantità di informazioni offerte su ciascuno di essi. Infatti, oltre alle diverse forme dei nomi, fornisce anche le date nelle quali essi furono attivi, l'indicazione dei momenti più importanti della loro carriera, dei generi letterari che hanno praticato e brevi note che spiegano i principali problemi di identificazione e di attribuzione delle loro opere. Ciascuna notizia è corredata dei riferimenti alle fonti consultate. Le informazioni presenti sono il risultato dello spoglio integrale di 47 repertori specialistici, scelti per affidabilità e completezza. I dati estratti sono stati valutati criticamente e corretti conformemente agli studi recenti più autorevoli, integrandoli con un numero quanto mai ampio di edizioni, saggi specialistici, enciclopedie, bibliografie e cataloghi. Corredata da un cd-rom, l’opera si configura attualmente come il più esauriente repertorio onomastico e bio-bibliografico sugli autori della letteratura latina medievale.

Composto nell’ultimo quarto del XIII impiegando fonti latine e francesi, questo testo fu copiato fino alla fine del XV secolo ed ebbe una notevole diffusione nell’area toscana, nell’Italia settentrionale e in Catalogna, dove fu tradotto in catalano nella prima metà del XLV secolo. Il presente volume ne offre un’edizione critica, per la prima volta fondata su un’analisi completa della tradizione diretta e indiretta.

The kings of East Anglia and Northumbria both died at the hands of the Great Heathen Army in the late 860s; one became a renowned martyr saint and one a villain. The latter, the Northumbrian Ælla, also became the antagonist in legends concerning the ancestors of the Uí Ímair, principal successors of the northern Great Army and leaders of the tenth-century Insular Norse.  According to a previously neglected text, 'De Northumbria post Britannos', another of northern England’s great dynasties claimed descent from Ælla. The Eadwulfings of Bamburgh were based in northern Northumbria, and appear to have gained leadership of their political community in the late ninth or early tenth century. With the rival position held by the Uí Ímair in the south, it is possible that Ælla’s later reputation and associated legends arose as a bi-product of tenth-century political conflict.

NOTES ON THE DATING, AUTHORSHIP AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MEDIEVAL LATIN «HYSTORIA TROIANORUM»

The paper examines the so-called «Hystoria Troianorum» – the medieval Latin story of the Trojan War that was published (1998) in «The Journal of Medieval Latin» by M.L.Colker (from the manuscripts Chantilly, Musée Condé, MS Condé 754 and London, British Library, MS Burney 186) and dated to the 14th century. Compared with fragments of Giovanni Codagnello’s chronicle published by O. Holder-Egger (1891), «Hystoria Troianorum» (or its better part) seems to have appeared much earlier than Colker proposes, – namely in the period before 1235 AD. Unlike most medieval writers, who described the fate of Troy, the author of the «Hystoria Troianorum» emphasizes in his narrative some features of the legendary Trojan past that hardly correlate with contemporary stereotypes of the aristocratic or clerical culture. Thus, the analysis of the short Latin text allows us to elaborate significantly the thesis about high variability of identities based on the medieval «myth of Trojan origin».

The Codex Buranus, compiled, in all likelihood, in South Tyrol in the first half of the thirteenth century, has fascinated modern scholars and performers ever since its rediscovery in 1803. Its diverse range of texts (some famously featuring in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana) and music gives testimony to the intensely vibrant, plurilingual, and multicultural milieu in which the Codex Buranus was compiled, but poses a challenge to modern users. Perhaps more so than many other medieval manuscripts, it is an artefact which demands, and benefits from, an interdisciplinary approach.

Emotions in a Crusading Context is the first book-length study of the emotional rhetoric of crusading. It investigates the ways in which a number of emotions and affective displays — primarily fear, anger, and weeping — were understood, represented, and utilized in twelfth- and thirteenth-century western narratives of the crusades, making use of a broad range of comparative material to gauge the distinctiveness of those texts: crusader letters, papal encyclicals, model sermons, chansons de geste, lyrics, and an array of theological and philosophical treatises. In addition to charting continuities and changes over time in the emotional landscape of crusading, this study identifies the underlying influences which shaped how medieval authors represented and used emotions; analyzes the passions crusade participants were expected to embrace and reject; and assesses whether the idea of crusading created a profoundly new set of attitudes towards emotions.

Emotions in a Crusading Context calls on scholars of the crusades to reject the traditional methodological approach of taking the emotional descriptions embedded within historical narratives as straightforward reflections of protagonists' lived feelings, and in so doing challenges the long historiographical tradition of reconstructing participants' beliefs and experiences from these texts. Within the history of emotions, Stephen J. Spencer demonstrates that, despite the ongoing drive to develop new methodologies for studying the emotional standards of the past, typified by experiments in 'neurohistory', the social constructionist (or cultural-historical) approach still has much to offer the historian of medieval emotions.

Chi non ricorda l’episodio dell’incontro di Francesco col lebbroso? Ma dietro quella scena ce ne sono molte altre simili, a partire da quella evangelica, che erano ancora ben presenti all’uomo del Duecento. Ne sono protagonisti personaggi diversissimi: dall’imperatore Costantino al monaco Iosafat, figura occidentale del Buddha; dall’ex soldato Martino, vescovo di Tours, alla principessa d’Ungheria Elisabetta, fondatrice di un ospedale; fino al leggendario «saint Ladre» (ovvero «san Lebbroso») o ad Aleydis di Schaerbeek, monaca lebbrosa dalle folgoranti esperienze mistiche. Le loro storie raccontano i diversi modi in cui la lebbra, forma estrema della malattia e dunque paradigma della fragilità umana, è stata messa in rapporto con la santità, offrendo uno spaccato di oltre mille anni di spiritualità cristiana.

Course description: More than any other secular variety of premodern writing, romances connect the literature of the Middle Ages with that of both earlier and later periods. They blend Classical myth with Celtic mystique, and oriental exotica with local concerns. Romances tell stories about King Arthur and his court, the crusades, and ancient English princes, many of which recur in the works of Shakespeare, Tennyson, or Eliot. In this course we will explore the romance tradition in England, with special attention to the origin and development of the Arthurian canon, the political meaning of Englishness and Britishness, the self-examination of courtly ethics and gender relations, and the ideological origins of the British Empire. The course will not only examine the aristocratic culture of medieval England but will also demonstrate how premodern writings inform the literature of later periods.

Within the classicising mindset of many Late Antique Gallo-Roman writers, we witness examples of the learned minority appropriating the right to represent the alleged historical memories of the majority’s pagan past. Distrust towards demotic morality and civilizational aptitude – never very far from being uttered aloud by the Imperial elites – are explicitly commented upon in the fifth-century Gallic play Querolus. Ausonius’ confidence within his textual universe in constructing the personal memories of his slave girl Bissula and the Gallic pagi alike can be compared to the received Lucanic topoi of dark Celtic groves, and to the development of these stock scenes in the episcopal gesta of the Merovingian Gaul. The vicarious creation of memories for the silent majority by the learned minority (with its mixture of Christian identity and a thorough knowledge of the classics) is not limited to narrative genres. An intriguing paratextual space for the construction of demotic religiosities is framed by the already-mentioned ecclesiastical writings and the scholia to Lucan and Juvenal, all pointing to creative re-imagining of the divinities worshipped by Gallic vulgus (implied to be changeless in an almost colonialist sense). The Gallic cult of Diana as a literary artefact is a particular case in point.

This roll, taken from King’s Bench 27 (KB27) at the National Archives, Kew, records a case of a counterfeiter of Torrington, Exeter, who, in 1421, turned King’s Approver but failed in this duty of bringing his appellees to justice. The roll is comprised of five main sections. The first of these details Richard Swalwe’s assumption of the status of King’s Approver and his appeal against a certain William Forde of Devon. The scribe relates the specifics of Richard and William’s acclaimed counterfeiting and the crown’s determination that the two men should be held in the custody of William Bradwardyn, the Marshal of the King’s Bench, to await judgement. The second section details how Forde determined to defend the claims made against him ‘by his body…as a faithful man against a traitor should defend by the law of the land’; that is to say, he made clear his preparedness to engage in trial by battle to defend his innocence. The third section states that Swalwe expressed his willingness to partake in such a duel. A location is agreed upon and a date set within the week with both men remaining in the custody of Marshal Bradbardyn until this time. Fourthly, the roll describes the encounter at Tothill and Swalwe’s prompt renege on his commitment to the duel. Finally, Swalwe is led to London, where he is hanged, drawn and quartered, and Ford is acquitted of the charges levelled against him.

This paper will explore the nature of approver’s appeal during the late middle ages as well as the place of trial by battle in this medieval judicial phenomenon, which has survived down to the modern day in the form of Queen’s evidence. Counterfeiting of the King’s coinage during the middle ages, measures taken by the Crown to combat it and its proliferation witnessed during the reign of Henry V will also be discussed. Finally, both a transcription and translation of KB27/648 will be provided.

Introduzione, traduzione italiana con testo latino a fronte a cura di Paola Casali. La donna non è solo “tanto gentile e tanto onesta”. Anche il nostro medioevo, come ogni età e troppe culture, non è immune alla misoginia. La raccolta delle nove favole del maestro Adolfo di Vienna, tramandata con il titolo «Doligamus» (gli inganni delle donne), e pubblicata ora in ebook in traduzione italiana e in latino da Paola Casali, è un testo in versi che si inserisce nel pieno della tradizione misogina, da quella occidentale della commedia latina e degli «exempla» medievali a quella delle raccolte novellistiche orientali, come «Le mille e una notte», fino a giungere a Boccaccio e oltre. Con l’intento dichiarato di mettere in guardia contro la malizia e la scaltrezza femminile, tutte le storielle narrate dipingono la donna, moglie e madre (in particolare delle donne!) secondo il repertorio misogino più classico, indugiando sui particolari anche licenziosi della donna traditrice come Dalila, feroce come Medea, mutevole come Proteo, fonte di tutti i mali e di tutte le disgrazie dell’uomo. L’edizione critica, a cura di Paola Casali, con un puntuale commento e traduzione per ciascuna favola, è stata pubblicata a stampa nel 1997 dalle stesse Edizioni del Galluzzo.

A draft translation of three interconnected documents - two charters and a letter - regarding a donation made by Matilda of Tuscany and Canossa (r.1076-1115). The first charter, issued in May 1095, records Matilda's granting of the estate of 'Standalmont' to found a new house of regular canons in Briey, and her placing of this foundation under the protection of the Holy See. Probably also in May 1095 Matilda wrote a letter to Albert of Briey, asking him to ensure that the donated property was conveyed to the canons. In the second charter, issued in May 1106, Matilda confirmed her earlier grant to the house of canons at Saint-Pierremont.

in Occidente dalla tarda antichità alla fine del Medioevo. È articolato
su due linee distinte, seguendo da una parte la nascita del culto dei santi
e dall’altra la composizione e la diffusione delle leggende agiografiche.
Si illustra così il parallelo sviluppo della venerazione, dai martiri
delle origini alle esperienze mistiche del tardo Medioevo; delle modalità
di canonizzazione, dalla devozione spontanea alla normativa
contemporanea; dei testi che parlano di santi, dai primi calendari
e martirologi alle grandi raccolte del Duecento, fino all’opera
dei Bollandisti. Infine si presentano dodici casi esemplari che, iniziando
dalle persecuzioni imperiali e arrivando a Francesco d’Assisi, mostrano
la complessa evoluzione nel Medioevo del culto dei santi, della letteratura
agiografica e del loro rapporto con la storia. Dodici schede monografiche
integrative sono dedicate ad autori (come Ambrogio di Milano e Iacopo
da Varazze) e a questioni (come i Dodici, gli apostoli, le fonti francescane)
importanti per gli studi agiografici.

Nel contesto della turbolenta storia d’Irlanda dei primi decenni del XIV secolo, l’arcivescovo di Cork, il domenicano Philip de Slane, viene inviato ad Avignone come legato del re d’Inghilterra Edoardo II, per discutere con papa Giovanni XXII della complessa condizione dell’isola: in seguito al fallimento dello sbarco di Edward Bruce, fratello del re di Scozia, gli Anglonormanni continuavano a spadroneggi re e ad opprimere gli Irlandesi. Philip, membro di una famiglia anglonormanna, reca in dono al pontefice un libro, la «Piccola descrizione dell’Irlanda», una rilettura aggiornata della «Topographia Hibernica» di Giraldo Cambrense. Sorprendentemente, nel testo che ci è pervenuto, il diritto della corona inglese a dominare l’Irlanda viene fortemente messo in discussione: questo diritto spetta al papa e solo lui può concederlo ad altri, a certe condizioni. E queste condizioni sono state disattese dai re d’Inghilterra… Non sono esattamente le parole che ci si attenderebbe dal legato di Edoardo II. Un mistero letterario medievale, qui per la prima volta pubblicato in edizione critica.

Fifth chapter also deals with later reflection of history of Great Moravia and cultural work of Cyril and Methodius, specifically in the era of High Middle-Ages. Pieces of Great Moravian history are recorded not only in Slavonic sources, but also in imperial and Czech chronicles. Special attention is given to the Tempore Michaelis imperatoris legend, Chronica Boemorum. (so called Chronicle of Cosmas), Chronicle of Dalimil and Chronicle of Pribik Pulkava from Radenin. Two main motives could be distinguished in these works. The first, which is inspired by the legend Vita et passio sancti Vencaslai et sanctae Ludmilae aviae eius (so called Kristian’s legend), focuses on lives and fates of Cyril and Methodius, mentions the christening of Borivoj and connects the fall of Great Moravian Empire with the disagreement between Methodius and Svatopluk or another Moravian dukes.
The second branch – “Cosmasean” – was on the other hand rather inspired by works of certain imperial chroniclers and deals mainly with the relationship between Svatopluk and the emperor. Both branches link together in the work of Pulkava, although mentions of both the christening of Borivoj and the fall of Svatopluk are present as early as in Dalimil’s work. Research of the motivic structure of chronicles is a priceless study of the authors’ worlds of thoughts. They show the authors’ opinion on how the ideal relationship between the sovereign and bishops, respective between Czech rulers and the emperor should look like.

Los poetas goliardos del siglo XII es una obra en la que se recogen, en texto latino y traducción al español, los poemas satírico-morales de Walter de Chatillon, Pedro de Blois, Felipe el Canciller, el Archipoeta, Hugo Primas de Orleáns, y los poemas 1-55 (satírico-morales) y 187-228 (de taberna y dados) de los Carmina Burana.
Se analizan la condición de poetas de todos ellos: a través del libro se podrán conocer el espíritu y la elegancia de estos textos; sus conocimientos clásicos y bíblicos: son poetas universitarios, instruidos y cultos; su relación con las situaciones eclesiástica y política del momento;

"This essay will explore the form and spirit of beast fable. After selecting this topic, I was heartened to read the closing sentences of W. Brian Altano's editorial page in the inaugural volume of Bestia; they seemed to confirm the utility of such and exploration. He wrote: 'There has been no attempt, in this first volume, at a precise delineation of the beast fable itself. In point of face, this will constitute a major thrust as the Society looks towards its second congress...in Copenhagen.' Although I cannot pretend to offer 'a precise delineation' in the brief span of this article, I can try at least to frame a few of the basic questions, beginning with the form and leaving the spirit for later."

This paper analyzes some tales of the genre named furta sacra, written in Italy during the Middle Ages. After proposing a definition that can describe the specific nature of this genre within the broader framework of the category of translationes, the focus is on the cast of characters. In particular, this essay takes into consideration the writing strategies and the narrative functions linked to the key players of the furtum: the costumer and the thief, the helper and the tomb keeper, the opponent and the antagonist, the saint, the robbed community, and the community of the adventus. The goal of this paper is to reflect on the writing mechanisms of the hagiographer, particularly related to the confirmation of God's intervention in the translation, the authenticity of the relics, and the presence of the saint in his new 'home'.

St. Birgitta of Sweden (d. 1373) is one of the most celebrated female visionaries and authors of the Middle Ages and a central figure in the history of late-medieval religion. An aristocratic widow, Birgitta left her native country in 1349 and settled in Rome, where she established herself as an outspoken critic of the Avignon Papacy and an advocate of spiritual and ecclesiastical reform. Birgitta founded a new monastic order, and her major work, The Heavenly Book of Revelations, circulated widely in a variety of monastic, reformist, and intellectual milieus following her death.
This volume offers an introduction to the saint and the reception of her work written by experts from various disciplines. In addition to acquainting the reader with the state of the scholarship, the study also presents fresh interpretations and new perspectives on Birgitta and the sources for her life and writings.
