La recente uscita di due volumi,-il primo, di Guido Verucci, intitolato, L'eresia del novecento e pubblicato da Einaudi, il secondo, collettaneo, a cura di Claus Arnold e Giovanni Vian, intitolato La condanna del modernismo, edito da Viella-ripropone con forza la questione del confronto tra chiesa e modernismo. La vicenda del modernismo, apparentemente confinata nell'ambito della condanna di una corrente specifica del rinnovamento ecclesiale e all'introduzione del giuramento antimodernista prestato da tutti i chierici fino al 1967, va inquadrata, secondo Margiotta Broglio (vedi articolo sul Corriere della sera del 3 luglio 2010) all'interno "del secolare confronto tra Chiesa e culture della modernità". "Che cosa resta, oggi,-si chiede Margiotta Broglio-delle correnti 'moderniste' e della loro spietata repressione? Verucci, il quale ricorda che tra le 'colpe del passato' per le quali Giovanni Paolo II chiese 'perdono' essa non rientrò, vede nel '68 religioso una 'nuova ondata di modernismo, assai più radicale e più vasta della precedente'. Arnold e Vian ritengono che il disciplinamento antimodernista continui a pesare e sia, in un certo senso, responsabile dell''implicito depotenziamento dell'insegnamento conciliare' e di una continuità, risalente al Vaticano I, che consente di riproporre, mutatis mutandis , il potere 'esclusivo delle gerarchie ecclesiastiche' nella 'definizione e interpretazione dei fondamentali diritti dell'uomo'". Se la vicenda del modernismo e quella ancor più specifica di Buonaiuti rimangono per alcuni aspetti datate, alcuni temi di fondo continuano a riproporsi e a interrogarci proprio per il carattere, per molti aspetti ancora irrisolto, del rapporto tra cattolicesimo e cultura moderna, di cui la crisi modernista rappresenta un importante capitolo. Il primo motivo di interesse per la vicenda di Buonaiuti, mi sembra quello, per dirla con Mancuso, che egli ha cercato di "servire la vita spirituale degli uomini, ai quali il pensiero dogmatico ufficiale spesso non riesce più a parlare in modo convincente a causa della superata immagine del mondo che contiene" (Mancuso, 2007: XV-XVI).

By focusing on Eliade’s early life and writings (1921–1936), and specifically on his work on Yoga, I address in this paper a question that is frequently asked about the problematic relation between personal belief and scholarship in fields such as the history of religions. Eliade’s interest in Yoga showcases his own personal spiritual quest, of course. But it is also informed by his earlier readings of, and reflections on, two polar aspects of the religious experience: the magical and the mystical. For Eliade, these two categories provide not only a key to unlocking the conceptual and pragmatic dimensions of Yoga, but also the impetus for charting a systematic theory of religion. The last major expression of these early ideas can be seen in Yoga: Essai sur les origines de la mystique indienne (1936). Eliade’s thoughts on Yoga and religion then took different paths, reaching their full expression in works published in Paris after 1945. In his later books on Yoga – Techniques du Yoga (1948), Le Yoga: Immortalité et liberté (1954) – the twofold schema of the magical and the mystical no longer plays a key hermeneutical role. Nonetheless, understanding this early phase of his work is crucial if we are to provide a comprehensive account of the development of his thought on Yoga. This early phase in his scholarly career and experiential transformation, marked by his trip to India, is also very important in terms of understanding the further developments of his ideas on history of religions, as well as to evince the ground on which Eliade built his own – never confessed – private religious belief.

Die Habilitationsschrift beschreibt die Geschichte von zwei unterschiedlichen, aber verbundenen Begriffskomplexen. Im ersten Teil wird die „kritische“ Formel „Ende des konstantinischen Zeitalters“ im Werk von Marie-Dominique Chenu OP am Vorabend des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils analysiert und danach in ihrer Genealogie erörtert. Im zweiten Teil wird der „konstruktive“ Begriff „Neue Christenheit“ – tief mit der Formel vom "Ende des konstantinischen Zeitalters" verflochten – sowohl in seiner Entstehungs- als auch Wirkungsgeschichte betrachtet.

Ernesto Buonaiuti is one of the most important scholars in the Italian
culture of the early Twentieth century and founder of the historical studies
on Christianity. In the years of the modernist crisis, Buonaiuti moves from
the position of the neo-Thomist philosophy to get closer to pragmatism: a
theoretical turning point, not without reservations and adjustments to his
perspective which will have an effect on his research in the decades to come.

Seventy years from the demise of Primo Vannutelli (Genazzano, 1885-Rome, 1945) – a Catholic priest and scholar known for his biblical studies, for his engagement in education and for his apostolate in various fields of social marginalization and poverty in Rome of his time – in the course of the reorganization of his papers, conducted by the author in the historical Archives of the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Rome, where Vannutelli had lived for over thirty years (1909-ca. 1945), some recently found correspondence, dated from the 1940’s, between the scholar and Ernesto Buonaiuti (1881-1946), are published here, preceded by a long biographical profile. The introduction and publication of the letters are situated in the light of the latest historical research on Modernism and particularly on Buonaiuti, and are oriented toward the analysis of the correspondence of the latter, for the most part still unpublished, thus allowing the reconstruction of the dense network of contacts with leading figures of European religious culture of the twentieth century.

Bonaiuti e Dal Pra. Exodus Generations. Ernesto Buonaiuti, Catholic priest and protagonist of the "modernist" crisis of the early twentieth century, is one of the founders with Mario Dal Pra of Rivista di storia della filosofia in 1946. The two scholars had very different approaches to the history of philosophy, as is evident from a consideration of Buonaiuti's essays on different themes in medieval thought. It is therefore interesting to try and identify possible reasons for their collaboration in the postwar period.

The aim of this paper is to explore the connection between heresy and liberalism. Its purpose is to show an alternative approach by putting liberal political doctrine in contact with a heterodox reli- gious theory, which is modernism.This movement, struck by official Papal excommunication, is apparently linked to the liberalism and is connected to the socialist theory of the French philosopher Georges Sorel.This results clear by looking at the early works of Roman priest Ernesto Buonaiuti, one of the most persecuted modernist by the Vatican. Many of Buonaiuti’s papers and books, which were published in the first decade of the 20th century , show such a great interest for the so- cialist doctrines to the point that it is almost pos- sible to talk of a “Christian socialism”. However, modernism and many modernists were oppressed by the ecclesiastical institution and secular intel- lectuals, condemning one of the most important Italian’s sociocultural movement to a forgetfulness that still stands.

In 1929 in Italy is signed the “Concordato”, an agreement between the Italian State and the Catholic Church. We can find issues and questions that recall the period characterized by Constantinian politics and by the famous Edict of Milan. This article reconstructs some facts and discussions in which political thought and philosophical reflection are closely connected. In particular, it is interesting to analyse the views of Ernesto Buonaiuti, a priest involved in the modernist crisis at the beginning of 20th Century and a scholar in History of Christianity. His writings about Augustine, the Constantinian period and Gioacchino da Fiore suggest a vision of the development of the Christian religion within which it is possible to identify some turnaround moments in which religious sentiment, community life and liturgical traditions leave more space to theoretical reflection and to philosophical thought. In this light, the relations between Buonaiuti, the Church, by which he was condemned, and the fascist regime acquire a special meaning.

Questo lavoro mira a riportare l’attenzione sui primissimi tre contributi italiani alla ricezione di Martin Buber, due recensioni giornalistiche ed una conferenza. La recensione di Ernesto Buonaiuti (1925) si concentra sui primi saggi maggiori di Buber sul giudaismo, la conferenza di Dante Lattes (marzo 1926) ancora sui primi saggi sul giudaismo come per Buonaiuti, e la recensione di Guido Lodovico Luzzato (settembre 1926) sulla Verdeutscheung di Buber & Rosenzweig. Nel primo caso è da sottolineare la perspicuità del sacerdote modernista e storico del cristianesimo e delle religioni Bonaiuti, attento e lungimirante osservatore della scena culturale europea. Nel secondo caso si tratta di una visione intragiudaica del pensiero buberiano proposta da un rappresentante autorevole del rabbinato e della cultura ebraica coevi, tra i primissimi traduttori del pensatore viennese. Nel terzo caso è la qualità letteraria e teologica della traduzione biblica, pensata per una Mitteleuropa di fatto scomparsa al suo compimento, ad essere valorizzata grazie alla raffinata formazione artistico-culturale del critico

Recensione del volume di Andrea Annese, Tra Riforma e patristica. Il metodismo in Italia dall’Unità al caso Buonaiuti, Collana Studi del Dipartimento di Storia Antropologia Religioni Arte Spettacolo - Sapienza Università di Roma, Roma, Viella, 2018.
Il volume si pone in diretta continuità con quella produzione storiografica tesa a indagare le comunità religiose minoritarie di impronta evangelica che pullularono nell’Italia dell’Ottocento, nonché il loro specifico apporto nel plasmare i valori e la fisionomia del nuovo Stato unitario. L’oggetto della ricerca è, in particolare, lo studio dell’origine e dell’affermazione del metodismo – confessione nata nel solco del risveglio religioso  prodottosi nell’Inghilterra del XVIII secolo – nella particolare conformazione assunta sul territorio italiano, in una temperie storico-politica del tutto peculiare, quella del primo secolo di vita del Regno d’Italia. È un ambito storiografico nel quale, in tempi recenti, si sono succeduti numerosi convegni e giornate di studi, accompagnati da pubblicazioni apprezzabili; sono mancati, tuttavia, lavori che perseguissero un intento organico e strutturato, e che mirassero a una raffigurazione a tutto tondo dei complessi caratteri ecclesiali, dottrinali, sociali e culturali che contraddistinsero il metodismo italiano.
