I'm one to quickly complain about Egypt-themed video slots, as there's been so many of them over the years that they all bleed together to me. The slots have the same icons, many of the same features, and just become as stale as a potato chip that's been sitting out for over a week. With that said, I'm going to give Red Tiger Gaming some credit here. The company's Vault of Anubis slot is different enough that it's actually excellent, giving us a cascading reel experience that will make it one of the Egyptian games I'll continue to play down the road.

Vault of Anubis is a 7 reel cluster pays video slot set in a temple dedicated to the dog god Anubis. The game's icons are all unique (thank god) and include a circle discus, a spade gem, a diamond gem, a heart gem, a spade gem, a jade scarab, a staff, an eye icon, Anubis, and a pink scarab. Features in the slot include wilds, scatters, free spins, stacked symbols, and cascading reels.

The game's key mechanic is the cluster pays feature, which sees five or more touching icons of the same type, setting off a win. Once that win is tabulated, the winning icons are removed from the reels, and new icons rain down from above. This allows you to chain together multiple wins on a single spin, which is an awesome feature. The game also sees scatters accumulated on the reels and when there are four icons collected, free spins are set off. This, combined with the cascading reels can see that free spins round go on for some time. The features and layout of the game give the slot a posted return to player percentage (RTP) of 95.7%, which is a bit lower than other slot developers but about spot-on for what Red Tiger puts out.

This game has built-in desktop and mobile support, meaning that you can play on desktop and mobile devices alike. The game plays identically and looks nice on each platform, although I give a slight preference to the mobile version, as it just looks brilliant on the smaller screen.

I'm a sucker for cascading reel games, so I'm happy to recommend Vault of Anubis to players. While I think the game would be better with a theme that's a bit different, the developer here at least went through the process of making icons that look unique, and that goes a long way in my book. If you also like cascading reels or are new to the genre and want to dip your toes in, this is an excellent choice.
