Svenska Spel Fined SEK2 Million for Slot Issue

Gaming operator Svenska Spel has been hit with a SEK2 million fine (€175,422) by Swedish gaming regulator Spelinspektionen after an investigation found that the operator moved slot machines but didn't update their licences to reflect the move.

The fine also included a formal warning, and additional violations could result in steeper penalties for the company. The machines were located at bingo halls in the Kinna and Hagfors location since December 2018, but eventually were moved to a Svenska Spel owned location in Skene Hagfor, where the company didn't have a licence for the machines.

The company filed paperwork to move the machines, but Swedish gaming laws changed in July of 2023 which necessitated additional paperwork that Svenska Spel didn't submit. The company is calling the matter an administrative error and has removed the machines as well as corrected its practices. This resulted in a smaller fine than they may have otherwise faced.

Regarding the incident, Svenska Spel Operations Sales Manager Thomas Engström said, "Our intention was to do the right thing, but due to an administrative misunderstanding, it went wrong. It won't happen again."
