When I first loaded up the Perfect Gems slot from Play'n Go, I thought I was going to hate it. The game is set in an old dusty office, and it doesn't have a lot that stands out to "wow" you. The deeper I got into the game though, I discovered some depth that helped make this game one of the better recent efforts that Play'n Go has released.
Perfect Gems is a 6 reel game, with potentially up to 21,609 ways to win. The symbols in the game are pretty bland, being made up of standard slot icons (9, 10, J, Q, K, A) and various gems of different colours (blue, red, yellow, green).
Gameplay sees symbols cascading down vertically on each reel, but also has an extra horizontal row that is four symbols wide on top that slides in from the right. This leads to a split symbols feature where any symbol in a column that matches the symbol in the horizontal row at the top is split into two, doubling the potential winning combinations. A wild symbol in the top row transforms every symbol in its column into split symbols. In addition, winning combinations are removed and new symbols cascade down which gives you the opportunity to win multiple times on a single spin. A win multiplier increments by one every time you get a successful win paid.
There is also a free spins feature that can be activated by landing 3 or more scatter symbols on a spin. 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters reward you win 9, 15, 21, or 27 free spins respectively. During the free spins round you can gain another 2 free spins every time you land a scatter symbol, so the potential is there for some rather long bonus rounds.
Perfect Gems can be played on desktop and mobile devices, and I think it does look a little better on the phone as the pixels are crunched together a little tighter. This makes the game look sharper in my opinion, although gameplay is exactly the same no matter what platform you choose to play on.
This game isn't the best in the world, but I really enjoy when a developer tries to make things different for their players. The cool shifting top reel and the splitting symbols aren't something you see all the time. This helps make Perfect Gems a game that is worth trying out at least once.

I really like the concept of Perfect Gems, it reminds me of a twist of a megaways game without actually being one. The design is really nice and the game has a lot of potential in the bonus round, however, I have only had one win over 100x bet, all the other times the game has been very volatile.
