About European Roulette

Roulette is one of the most exotic games that can be found at online casinos. In the past, roulette was reserved for the more affluent gamblers at exclusive casinos but online casinos have made this game more accessible to anyone who wishes to play. Our free roulette game is standard European or "single-zero" roulette.

How is roulette played?

The game is played around a table with a roulette wheel and a ball that is thrown into the spinning wheel. Various different types of bets are placed on the roulette table according to which pocket or range of pockets players think the ball will land in the wheel. There are two main types of roulette - European roulette and American roulette. European roulette has numbers 1-36 and a zero, totalling 37 slots on the wheel, and a house edge of 2.7%. American roulette has an extra pocket (the 00) which totals 38 slots - however the payouts remain the same, meaning the house edge is almost doubled on American Roulette (5.26%).

Bets can either be placed in the centre of the table on the various numbers (inside bets) or on the outskirts in special zones which cover a range of numbers (outside bets). The wheel is spun and the ball is rolled into the wheel in the opposite direction to the spinning wheel. Eventually the ball drops into a numbered pocket and players are then paid out if their bets correspond with wherever the ball stops. There is no sure way of predicting where the ball will land, and therefore the more adventurous bets pay out the higher odds, albeit at the same house edge.

Bet	Name and Information
	Straight-up bet This is a bet on one single number and pays out 35:1
	Split bet This bet is placed on the line dividing two numbers and pays out 17:1
	Street bet (aka 3-line) This is a bet on a single horizontal line of 3 numbers and pays out 11:1. The chip is placed on the outer edge on either end of the line of numbers.
	Corner bet This is a bet placed on any four numbers in a square formation and pays out 8:1. The bet is placed on the "cross" formed by the intersection of the lines running through the middle of the four numbers.
	Six line bet This is the equivalent of two street bets and pays out 5:1. The bet is placed on the intersection between where you would place either Street bet.
	Outside dozen bets Bets placed outside the numbers on the 1st 12 (1-12), 2nd 12 (13-24), or 3rd 12 (25-36) zones. These pay out 2:1
	Outside column bets Bets placed outside the numbers on the three column zones marked 2-1. Obviously these pay out 2:1
	Outside even money bets These consist of Red/Black, Odd/Even and High/Low and they pay out even money, or 1:1

Other roulette rules

There are a couple of other roulette rules that sometimes apply to European roulette, adding some slight complexity to the game, but also making the odds better for the player. Neither of these rules are used in our free roulette game on this page.

En Prison: This is a rule that applies to all even money bets. If the ball lands on zero then the player's bet remains "in prison" until the next spin. If the player wins on the next spin they reclaim their original bet with no winnings. If they lose on the second spin then their imprisoned bet is lost. This rule reduces the house edge of European Roulette to 1.35%.
La Partage: This rule also applies to the even money bets but it is slightly different to the En Prison rule. Instead of having their even money bet imprisoned if the ball lands on zero, players instead lose only half their bet. The effect on the house edge is identical to the En Prison rule.
