Banned NBA Player Pleads Guilty in Betting Scandal

Banned NBA player Jontay Porter turned himself into the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York where he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud as part of a sportsbetting scandal that took place during the previous scandal.

Porter will have to pay more than $450,000 in fines and fees to the court and is facing a prison sentence of between 41-51 months. At press time he was currently out on bond after paying 10% of the $250,000 total that was laid down by the court.

Porter played for the Toronto Raptors and was working with other people to fix prop bets during games that involved him. Of note, gamblers bet the "under" on him in games, and he left games during that time in order to make sure those bets hit. He also was found to have been placing bets on basketball, which is against league rules. The fixing of the games was part of his trying to pay off his debt from betting on other events. In all, the other people in the case won over $1 million from the bets.

Porter was banned by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for life in May.

It's possible that Porter could face criminal charges in the Canadian province of Ontario related to the case but no charges have been filed as of press time. The former player states that he is currently attending treatment for gambling addiction.

Sentencing for Porter is scheduled for December 18th, 2024. Casino Listings News is keeping up on this story and will update readers as appropriate.

In one year this guy could be going from making millions playing pro basketball to sitting in the federal klink. So crazy!
