Description
本発明の一態様の表示装置について図1〜図7を用いて説明する。
本発明の一態様の表示装置は、2つの表示ユニットと1つの筐体を有する。各表示ユニットは、表示領域及び非表示領域を有する表示パネルと、該表示領域と重なる第1の面、及び第1の面と連続し、該非表示領域と重なる第2の面を有する支持体と、を有する。筐体は、折りたたみ可能である。筐体は、2つの表示ユニットに挟まれる連結部を有する。筐体は、2つの表示ユニットを支持する。2つの表示ユニットは、互いの支持体の第1の面が同じ方向を向き、且つ、互いの支持体の第2の面が対向して、展開された状態の筐体に配置される。表示装置では、支持体の第1の面と重なる表示パネルの表示領域による表示が、表示装置の使用者に視認される。なお、本発明の一態様において、支持体の第1の面とは、支持体の他の面を介さずに、表示パネルの表示領域と重なる面を指す。同様に、本発明の一態様において、支持体の第2の面とは、支持体の他の面を介さずに、表示パネルの非表示領域と重なる面を指す。
次に、本発明の一態様の表示装置に用いることができる材料の一例について説明する。
筐体や支持体は、プラスチック、金属、合金、ゴム等を用いて形成できる。プラスチックやゴム等を用いることで、軽量であり、破損しにくい筐体や支持体を得られるため、好ましい。
表示パネルは可撓性を有することが好ましい。なお、表示パネルは可撓性を有していなくてもよい。例えば、表示装置に合うようにあらかじめ成形された表示パネルを用いてもよい。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の表示装置に用いることができるフレキシブルな表示パネルについて図8〜図13を用いて説明する。本実施の形態で例示する表示パネルを曲げた際、表示パネルにおける曲率半径の最小値は、1mm以上150mm以下、1mm以上100mm以下、1mm以上50mm以下、1mm以上10mm以下、又は2mm以上5mm以下とすることができる。本実施の形態の表示パネルは、小さな曲率半径(例えば2mm以上5mm以下)で折り曲げても素子が壊れることがなく、信頼性が高い。表示パネルを小さな曲率半径で折り曲げることで、本発明の一態様の表示装置を薄型化することができる。また、光取り出し部224を大きな曲率半径(例えば、5mm以上100mm以下)で折り曲げることで、表示装置の側面に広い表示部を設けることができる。本実施の形態の表示パネルを曲げる方向は問わない。また、曲げる箇所は1か所であっても2か所以上であってもよい。
