Abstract

Textile materials, especially of cotton, are impregnated with sodium chlorite and then treated in a closed space with steam in the presence of a volatile reducing agent. The material may be treated with a chlorite solution acidified with formic or acetic acid and then introduced into a chamber into which steam and hydrogen sulphide are introduced simultaneously at temperatures of 140 DEG to 212 DEG F. Sulphur formed during the reaction is discharged from the reaction chamber together with the material, from which it may be removed by washing. In an alternative procedure, the material, impregnated with a neutral solution of chlorite, is placed in a chamber into which steam and an aqueous solution of formaldehyde are introduced, the formaldehyde oxidizing to formic acid to produce acidic conditions. The reaction chamber may be additionally heated by steam tubes. After the treatment the cloth may be washed in successive baths at 203 DEG , 158 DEG F., and room temperature, and dried. An apparatus is described in which the process is effected continuously.
