Mining suit

While boring real life is meddling in the way, I've managed to finish a tiny achievement. Some time ago I got a Necromunda Ambot thanks to a pal.

You know, one of these guys

I immediately thought I had an use for such a beast within my Genestealer Cult project, as a mining support device of some kind, which is quite obvious, of course. But instead of being a poor Ambull augmented and trapped into a metal framework (however, how cool is an Ambull Dreadnought, uh?), I soon envisioned it as a suit of some kind. There are many conversions of the like over the internet, and I knew that it certainly works.

I had to face a setback quite at the very beginning of the process. The hip. It's purely mechanical, it enhances the robot vibe, but you cannot pretend there's a person inside there (and the torso is not large enough for a human sized being to fit in). So I had to replace it. First thing I found that could work was a bit from a Terminator:

Yup, from the Space Hulk termies

Preliminary view of what I had in mind

It's a little bit forced, I know, but in my mind it worked better than the robot waist and hip. Next step was to remove the cogs and make the central part look as it was the inner part of the armour.

When in doubt, add cables and tubes, you can never go wrong with that

Hmm, I can see it happening

You may have noticed I didn't use the pulley and hooks over the head. Instead of those, I used the grav weapons. They are supposed to be the laser cutters the suit uses for working with hard rocks.

First colour test

You may have noticed the main flaw in this suit's design. It's a huge, bulky armour, with two laser cutters over the user's head and two enormous claws with fucking saws attached, ready to cut and smash the hardest rocks in the mines.

So the user's head is exposed to the crushed stone flying away like shrapnel all over? Hmm, no wonder the union guys were so tiresome on the subject.

I found a solution in this air freshener bit. The liquid inside got spilled right as I first tried to use it and it was kind of unusable, but its shape was appealing enough, so I kept the thing.

Finally got an use for it!

I only needed quite a small piece as a visor:

But the shape was essential

Just to make a first impression. Hmm, it could work...

But... it didn't. Though I cut it more or less to fit in the armour, once I glued it the fumes of the superglue fogged the whole piece.

I had already unglued it before taking the pic, that's why you can see it doesn't really fit in the shape

After cursing in several strange languages, I took a deep breath and started again.

New piece, different approach

I used a tiny piece of card and allowed some ventilation on the model, as much as I could afford.

Will it work?

It worked! I had a minor fogging problem, but on the whole I called it a victory. I sealed the imperfections with greenstuff and gave it a more industrial looking with the front protection bars.

I can live with that level of fogging

Well, you get a rough idea

On the process of highlighting that yellow

Little mystery on the arms. I painted the Fodinae Conlegium ('Mining Guild' in HighGothic) signs and some random numbers and stuff. I also glued a staple on each arm. No particular reason, they looked nice as additional bar protections over those gears.

Oh, and remember, when in doubt... right, cables

Here you have the thing finished!

I love the shape of the suit. It's not elegant at all, but crude in its design, it really works perfectly as a heavy duty industrial armour. You could replace the claws with forklifts and would have the 40K version of Ripley :D

A size comparison shot:

Come on, Humpy, go smash the infidels

So these are my main heavy support devices for the Cult so far:

Yellow is the new black

Oh, and you know what's the best part? The sprue comes with two different sets of legs. So now I have another pair of legs I can use for... I don't know, I guess I'll have to make up something!

The Cult breeding pits

I've lost track of at which point expressions such as 'crazy lunatic' or 'deranged madman' lost their connotation and became just descriptive when applied to me. Never mind. The case is that I had to give some continuity to the Genesteraler Cult catacombs project, which at the moment only counted with a single room. I wanted to put the Hobbit core box scenery to an use, so I designed a room in which I could use all of it. Yes, that's right. All the wooden platforms. Yes, I'm that crazy, didn't you read the beginning of the post?

So I built this monster with foam board and a kilo of Das clay. Yes, once again you read it right.

You don't see a thing. I understand
Just from the other side
I hope you will see it better with some additional work on it...

The sand on the floor was a terrible pain in... well, in everywhere

Those are supposed to be caverns open to the main hall. You will eventually see what I mean
Yes, I could have used papier mache for the same purpose, but I only thought of that after using 1 Kg. of Das. I regret nothing.

Well, let's have a look at those wooden platforms.

They are cool. I could definitely use more of these
Preliminary display:

First floor of the main structure
And basic shape of the second floor too
The same from the other side

Of course what you have seen by now is the result of several weeks of intermitent work, so at this point I was kind of fed up with all this and wanted to move on new stuff (as always). So I didn't add an overwhelming amount of details. I'm keeping the cave dirty and feral:

Some wiring and a couple of bits here and there

On the whole I think it works
I've added a couple of electric lights, but I think I could add some torches or something like that.

Wires add a visual sense of dirt and chaos, but I guess it's going to be challenging gaming wise....
You know, Operation game, 40K Edition

I would have liked to paint some blaspheme Genestealer Cult iconography on the walls, but the idea came too late, and at that moment it was impossible for me to reach the walls with a brush. I'm keeping the idea for future rooms though.

So the dungeon has two rooms now!

I foresee storage issues with these
The idea of verticality is tempting, I have to think about it for future rooms. I find it fun seeing this giant, shambling structure. For gaming purposes I think this cave will be the breeding pits, the place where the Cult nurtures all the creatures that must not be seen openly on the surface and where they dwell until the moment for the rebellion to come. I guess the rules for this room could be rolling dice each turn to determine from which cavern will the Hybrids emerge to attack their invading enemies, something like that.

Anyway, the important fact is that I can consider this done (apart from those torches or other tiny details) and I can move on more stuff!!

It's a game of thrones

...but not the kind you are thinking of ;)

This (finally!) is the long awaited continuation to the Genestealer Patriarch throne I once promised. So well, first things first, let's have a Patriarch!

Ready to sit
I forgot to take a pic before priming it, so here you have it once painted, you can see I added a sexy belly and stuff:

I think he wants a kiss...
I repositioned the right hand, so instead the Charles Xavier pose it now resembles more a blessing lord, kind of a Pantocrator, which suits the vibe, I hope.

Sooo, the throne. I begun to build some structure around it.

Too large a piece, you say?
Well, it is a large throne room, but it is due to the fact that I had something special in mind...

Stay with me for a while...
I used Das putty to make rough rock walls, so the room itself looked like recently excavated, in accordance with the rock to which the throne itself is attached.
But the question stands, I guess. Why so large? Well, in fact it never was my idea to make just a mere diorama...

What's this nonsense?

Why this absurd box?
Time to reveal my plans! I am to build a full Space Hulk like board, but full 3D, set in the mine and underground catacombs in wich the Genestealer Cult dwells. So the throne room will be the starting point; it's as good as any other. In the first moment I painted it like this:

First one. Just the rest of the board to do
But you know what? When I saw it all so grey and dark I realised I didn't like it. I thought that a whole board this gloom would be too much for me. I wanted something less grimdark and in another fashion. So I repainted it:

Brown, beige and the like. The same yet not the same at all
Then I begun to add details. Let's see some:

A cent and a bead. What kind of decoration is this?
If we add some greenstuff...
...we get a valuable idol!
Cute ministealer
Ahem

A painting for a worthy wall
The central slab on the floor needed something else
And this banner will cover the secret door behind the throne

Yup, a secret escape door, I've thought of everything :D

Let's see it all finished!

I didn't glue the golden idol so I can move it, just in case an adventurer decides to steal it, you know ;). Close ups of the details:

Ideal for sacrifices and all kind of rituals

Secret door, remember?
 Finally, a bird's view:

Now I can say it. It has started. This will be only the first of many other rooms and corridors to come. Wish me luck for I am going to need it!
